Another One Bites The Dust!! Sniff...

Although not Tiki, the Peppermill Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge chain has closed another one!!! Many tiki central members on the West Coast have gone to at least one of these "abomination of interior decoration" lounges. The location in Daly City is now closed but currently still furnished. There is a realty sign on the building and a flyer that states "Thanks Daly City for 30 great years" (maybe they meant to add "and one really SHI*TY year" to the "30 years" sentence).
According to Yahoo yellow pages there is still one Peppermill left in the Bay area (unless they just closed, too);
Peppermill

Concord, CA Map

I would call first if you are going to make the trip.
Why do we like the Peppermill? What makes it an "interior decoration abomination"? Mr. Verbose thanks you for asking. The Peppermill chain decided in the early mid-seventies to build the ugliest restaurants and tackiest bars in the world and make them all essentially the same!!! (Well, this really may NOT have been their intention, but it is the result) The bars are really dark with a color scheme of purple(?) and are designed so that you can't really tell where the carpet ends and the walls and furniture begin! The basic theme in the lounge is DISCO!!!! Use of mirrors and chrome also rampant and the seating areas are designed like conversation pits without the pit, EXCEPT for the fireplace seating!! The fireplace seating is a 3/4 circle surrounding and circular fireplace that has bubbling water and FIRE!!! This alone is enough for anyone of you to see if you have a Peppermill still in business near you and RUSH right out to one tonight!!!
If you are hungry, you can eat in the overdone restaurant with fake cherry(?) trees everywhere!! UG-LEEE!
There are also Peppermill Casino's with trademark ugly restaurants and bars in Las Vegas and Reno. And NO, I am NOT an investor!!
Like Tiki joints, if we don't patronize the interesting places in life, we will soon be left with only Chevy's to go to!!

NOTE: I just found out the Santa Clara Peppermill is gone!

Noooooooo! :x

Is anything sacred anymore? Where will us Bay Area folk go for tacky dining now?

A

That sucks. I think the Peppermill decor is beautiful not ugly! I'm not being ironic or facetious - the carpet is spectacular, and the cobalt blue velvet upholstery is fantastic!

And the typical architecture with the Brady-Califorynesian rooflines is great too. Sorry to see the Daly City one go. But I was also sorry to see when they installed the TVs in the bar fireplace nook.

I'll notify Walgreen's that the building's for sale.

I was just at the Peppermill in Reno on Thursday night for dinner. The great thing about them is that the bar is the same (decor, water firepit, etc.) in all the Peppermills (unfortunately some have put in plasma TVs). I hope we don't lose anymore.

The Aquarium bar in the Reno Peppermill now has some tropical drinks in tiki mugs available, but I didn't have a chance to sample them this trip.

There is a Peppermill in Vegas. I have Weird Uncle Tiki to thank for introducing me to the Peppermill.

Last time I was there, they added large plasma screens behind the bar and smaller ones around the lounge.

Purple shirt, hi-five!

I edited my original message since I just found out that the Santa Clara Peppermill is also GONE, making the Concord location the only one in the Bay Area. The woman who answered the phone in Concord said the only other locations are the ones in Vegas and Reno and anything else called "Peppermill" is not the Peppermill we are talking about.

M

Utterly tragic.

I had a great afternoon getting plowed in Daly City not too long ago. The Fish Bar in Reno does serve in fairly expensive mugs. The drinks are so-so, but the Volcano mug is superb. Forget a volcano in the middle- the whole mug is the volcano!

Ah well, should we go to Concord?

(never thought I'd say that sentence!)

The Santa Clara Peppermill was the site for the planning of Tiki Crawl #2 (or was it #3?). Too bad its gone.

Somewhere I have a craffee of colored sugar someone stole for me for my birthday.

The Peppermill saved my life last year in Vegas after a night of over indulging...great food and a wacky atmosphere!

Jab, you made me laugh through my tears.

the peppermill in vegas is living on borrowed time as they do not own the land... and the la concha hotel was demolished (except for the front conch shell entrance) to make way for the development of some high rise condos or sumthin.

see it while you can - it's wonderful.

Yeeouch, Futura, could you elaborate about La Concha? Is all of the "shell" building still there, or only the front entrance part of it? I'm hoping that it's just the motel part in back that's gone, and that the entire shell is still around. But realistically the front is probably endangered too, huh.

We were just watching old episodes of the Crime Story tv show, part of which took place in Vegas. Not exactly vintage Vegas, but by the hyper-acclerated skyline evolution processes there, I guess the 80s were practically the stone age. Scenes at La Concha and El Morocco, plus lots of the Landmark and Plaza and Fremont St. I think their investigation HQ is the Sky Ranch motel, which I think is on the Boulder Hwy.

I passed through Las Vegas the first weekend of December '03. Ate at The Peppermill, and stopped by La Concha. LOTS of construction was going on! I went into the La Concha lobby, which, by the way, was a total mess and had lots of files and paperwork all over the place right in the entrance lobby!. I asked the young lady behind the desk about all the construction, and she said that she would be surprised if they were still there in the next 2 years. I asked about The Peppermill to see if she knew if it would be affected by any buyouts or the like. She said that she didn't know for sure, but it would most likely be taken over shortly after the final closure of La Concha.

It's truly sad to see these historic places go.

Before leaving, I told the clerk at La Concha, "will a $20 help you to recall where any memorabilia like an original ashtray, and maybe some matches and postcards might be?" (it never hurts to ask). She said that she'd love to take my $20, but everything like that has been long gone and nothing was left over in any of the old files that were laying all over the lobby.

So sad the continual destruction or "forgetro-fitting" of Vegas. As far as I know the Glass Pool Motel is still there!!
I love that place, but the pool was closed the winter I stayed there a few years ago.
When I stayed there I saw in the lobby an architectural rendering of a nasty building and the receptionist giddily replied that is the New GlassPool Casino!!! YUCK!

See-I TOLD you I live in Tackyville! Home of the only Peppermill in the Bay Area! Maybe a TC gathering spot sometime? Just let me know!

Whaddya mean, Martiki, you never thought you'd say "should we go to Concord"??????

Tacky

And another one down, and another one down, another one bites the dust!

Peppermill Concord just closed this week. I was there last friday night and everything was hunky dory. We went there tonight and it was dark with a sign on the door saying thanks for 25 years Concord. I am so depressed!

What happens to the decor? I really want some pink sugar and one of those cool silk flowering trees!
