Quiet Village

First off, I did a search to see if this topic has been covered, and it appears it hasn't. Apologies if this is redundant.
Anyway, I was just going through all of the versions of Quiet Village that I have, and I think I hear 3 exotica versions by Martin Denny. That's not counting the Moog and bossa nova versions. Am I hearing right? The first is from the Exotica I & II CD, the second is from the Quiet Village/The Enchanted Sea CD, and the third is from Ultra Lounge: Mondo Exotica CD. They all have different times, seem to sound different, and not just mixes.

Also, besides the 3 Denny exotica versions, I have 16 others in my collection, and they are by:

There is a version on a small one-off LP I have called "An Evening at the Royal Tahitian". It contains a recording of the house band called "the Royal Tees" performing Quet Village. Definately NOT a well known LP or version, but a pretty good one.

Although I absolutely LOVE Mr. Denny's bossa-nova version I absolutely LOATH the moog version. I guess at the time moog synthesizer was a new and cool thing, but that's one song I always skip on the CD changer.

Great collection! Despite being penned by Baxter, and excellent renditions from both Lyman and Auletta -- I have always felt Denny made this song great. If you search you could try to locate versions from George Cates, Don Tiare, and The Ventures (there's probably more).

The Astronauts (60s surf and frat band from CO) did a great surf cover of Quiet Village! And Thee Phantom 5ive covered the Astronauts arrangement of that on a 45 for Dionysus 4 or 5 years ago.

I know that Don Ho does a version of Quiet Village with lyrics in a medley including the theme from Hawaii 5-0, also with lyrics.

In regards to the Martin Denny versions, someone told me last night that there is a mono version with Arthur Lyman on vibes, and a stereo version with a different vibes player. I cannot confirm this though, even after refering to liner notes on the Exotica LP and Quiet Village LP.

Tom Principato is a good blues guitar player, but the cd Blazing Telecasters is more of a showcase for the other featured player.....Danny Gatton. This is a live recording with Quiet Village clocking in at eleven and a half minutes!

Poly Pop, King Ku's corny lyrics for Quiet Village are from the Don Ho vocal version, one of my favourites, so bad it's good. I first heard them when the Beachbum and I were at the Kona Kai in Chicago in '96, the house band's Sonny Kuni crooned them for us after we requested the song...

I am a big fan of "Lounge" cover version compilations, there are not enough out there!
I was enlighted to their thrill by the Canadian performance artist troupe KBZ, who in the 90s used to put on happenings called "A Taboo Caravan into a Quiet Village" in Germany, where SEVERAL bands used to perform in SEVERAL rooms for SEVERAL days playing ONLY versions of the three Exotica classics TAB00-CARAVAN-and QUIET VILLAGE! Went right over the head of almost everybody. As a result KBZ put out three cassettes of found vinyl cover versions first, and then realeased two CDs (then they broke up with their Dutch label) with 27 versions of Quiet Village/Taboo/Caravan on each. They are mentioned on Hanford's Exotica site.

This was only topped by Munich Klang Museum curator Kalle Laar, who released THREE CDs with 25 versions of the classic "La Paloma" on each, another fave of mine.
I also have an 18 version CD of "Mack The Knife", with Bertold Brecht singing one, and Moritz R gave me a selfburned disc with 22 versions of "Harlem Nocturne", where Mel Torme's vocal rendition is among my favourites...

There are many other Exotica classics that would warrant cover version compilations, I could easily see 20 versions of "Jungle Drums","Adventures In Paradise" (Soundtrack of the TV series), "Misirlou","Baia" and others.

C'mon all you CD burning cracks, start collecting.

PS: Some of the above mentioned Exotica classics I just found on a nice double CD re-release by British Pianist Stanley Black, "Exotic Percussion" and "Intimate Percussion", out from Vocalion in England.

Now that Sven has refreshed my memory about the "Exotic Trilogy" CDs - who can burn me a copy? I can't find them for sale anywhere!

Perhaps inspired by the Exotica trilogy, but perhaps more in keeping with Sven's mention of Mack the Knife than with any Exotica, I became semi-obsessed with the Irving Berlin tune 'Blue Skies', and started collecting versions of that. I have almost 30.

Maybe we should get a bunch of people to each pick a song, amass versions of it, burn a CD, and than all trade!

That's just what I had in mind, James. (Actually I should not talk, because I can't burn CDs.)
That "Blue Skies" compilation would definitely be surreal, in a David Lynchian sort of way!

My favorite version of Quiet Village is a 10 minute version done by jazz singer Rene Marie. That version is 10 minutes long (it includes a bass solo), and can be found on her CD 'Live at Jazz Standard'

Hey all, I have posted an LP for download in the thread "Exotica LP Available For Download". It is "An Evening at the Royal Tahitian" which was self produced by the RT back in '60 (I think). It features the house band performing a very slow version of "Quiet Village" complete with bird calls.

was mentioned previously in this thread. I picked up a nice copy of it at the local Salvation Army recently. It's called Mellow Yellow -- Odell Brown and the Organ-izers. Song 1 is the title track; Song 2 is Quiet Village. It is done nicely in my opinion. To quote from the album notes:

I can hack "Quiet Village" on the uke and sing the words at the same time. But, that probably won't be anyone's favorite version of the tune......

AMG gets bananas sometimes. My CD is listed as jazz when it is actually haunted house electronic ambient soundscapes. I wrote to them several times but they never fixed it. Sigh.
