Cheekytiki New stuff, Tikis for Kanaloa

Heres A few carvings I'm working on at the moment and a chance to say hi!

Cheers, yeah workin' on a few more at the moment hopefully gonna get a few more done like the dark brown one which is a tree fern trunk,it has a cool hairy finish. These are going to a tropical garden centre at the weekend and I still have a few more to do for them, better get back to it!

Those are filppin' fantastic! The fern reminds me of the palm I'm cutting except even furrier! Wow! What's the other wood you are using? Once again, wow!

A mixture of all sorts really some are left over beams from a kids adventure playground a bit like telegraph poles, good for outside as they are treated and don't rot, lime, and the middle ones laburnum if I remember correctly which is really nice as it has a dark core. Would like to get Palm but can't seem to find it over here.

thanks cheeky! well, my friend found a stash of old palm trunk sections that the city must have cut up and dumped years ago...some were rotted out but I managed to salvage a few good pieces.....I thought that it was like trying to carve a shredded wheat but that fern looks like the "difficult to carve" award winner!

Yeah its in my courtyard,the weathers not bad at the moment so I work outside. I live in a warehouse and built a mezzanine level with a spray room underneath which I can use in the winter, but its nicer outside.

It's my logo, I kinda mixed up the old victorian statue of a boy peeing(being English)with Tangaroa and got Cheekytiki.
I'm gonna carve one soon to have as a water feature at home.

Cheeky- these are wonderful. Your style is eclectic and the detail is great. If you ever can get your hands on palm you must have a go at it. It's very soft and easy to carve. Great work!

The next ones being dealt with presently, last week I scored some Cherry 5'long by 15" and I've just been given some Horse chestnut 6' by 2', problem's trying to move the things around.

Found some time to do some carving at last,a moai which I'm thinkin of turning into a lamp.

and I've just roughed this out from my big piece of cherry

great work i like that Moai, he has a good style, that really makes him stand out, like a sports cars he just looks fast, sleek, and smooth. good job, can't wait to see that roughed out one all finished up.

Octane took the words right out of my mouth. I love the long smoothe lines and finish.

That cherry ended up cracking quite a bit, but I love the "aged" look of the tiki because of it. It would be hard for me to let this guy go, if I had to. Very cool...

Lucky, lucky me! I just got to see some of these pieces up close, and folks, they are even more striking live. I may have been even more impressed with how his studio/apartment is constructed!

Cheers to Cheekytiki and Anjy: when my accommodations fell through on my way home from Russia, they put me up for the night, proving to be as hospitable and kind as they both are talented. And you folks KNOW how talented our little peeing carver is; you'll have to take my word on the rest of my compliments.

Incidentally, Cheekytiki, do you know where the most famous tiny tinkler is? He's called the Mannequin Piece (I do NOT know the spelling; it's Belgian.). He resides in Brussels, in the form of a fountain, that yes, wees. The story is that the beloved, very young Prince was lost in the woods and feared dead. He was found, fortunately, and when he was discovered, he was in the act of relieving himself.

Today, Brussels has more rude reminders of this event than most porn shops can handle, corkscrews being the most common vulgarity. I myself have a wee wee-er in silver on my charm bracelet.

Heres my latest Tiki, made as a leaving present for the manager of a Cocktail Bar from his staff. It's 2' and made from Lime with dark stain and then waxed.

Great job, Cheeky! What tiki room would be complete without a Ku bartender? Umbrellas? Ku don't need no stinkin' umbrellas? And...don't piss him off, or he might pee in your drink!

The detail, carving, and finish on these are just incredible. Was it hard to stain the teeth a lighter color than the rest? Is it hard to keep it from bleeding over? What kind of stain do you use? What kind of wax?

Sorry for the 20 questions, but I'm starting on my first palm tiki. I'll have twenty or so hours in by the time I'm finished carving, and I'd be pretty bummed out if I screwed it up at the end. Besides, yours look so great - you must have all the answers!

Many thanks Aaron. Now I know nothing about Palm, so how stains and waxes take to it you can only try.
I basically use anormal woodstain which I spray on and coloured Briwax.
Getting the different colours is still a bit hit and miss. I started just using different coloured waxes (ie dark and clear) and they do mix abit when you buff it up. I think next time I'll mask off the light areas before I spray the stain and then use just the clear wax on those areas . Good luck!

Hey, Benzart - If you see this post, have you ever used wax on palm wood? How'd it work?

Anyway, Cheeky - I am a little concerned about the stain running. I think tikis look best when you get nice clean cut lines and clear definition between the different parts. From the photos it does'nt look like you had any problem with this - they look great.

I like your idea of leaving some parts natural and staining others.

Another idea that occurred to me is to stain my tiki dark brown, then inlay come white shell material in the eyes and in the ears (my current work has some Moai type eras worked in). I'm also thinking of giving him a bone nose piercing, but haven't quite worked through how I'm going to do it.
