For those uninitiated to the incredible Robert Drasnin..let me just say that his "VOODOO" and Michel Magne's "TROPICAL FANTASY" are probably forever my top two favorite abosolutely over the top, dyed-in-the-wool exotica records to date. It'll be a real treat. |

OK, her personal assistant posted this message today in the Tiki Music forum: http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=12215&forum=11&start=30&30 **Posted: Today; 05:37 am Yma Sumac has confirmed her appearance at Hukilau in Florida just today. I am her personal assistant, and even I am surprised she is making a public appearance! She is very private these days and only signs through the mail. But she is still up for some fun with the fans it seems! See details on her own site at : http://www.yma-sumac.com or at http://www.thehukilau.com I have never been to Florida so this should be fun. It will be Miss Sumac, her manager and myself there. Hopefully you will be there too! With Sumac, we NEVER KNOW when it will be her last public outing. She changes her mind frequently, and we must not forget she is not in her 30's anymore.....** So she is coming to the Hukilau? I'm thrilled if she's going to make it. |

Yes, Yma is coming to Hukilau! It is confirmed. I just heard last night from her manager as well. I was going to hold onto the news for a couple more days just to make sure but didn't expect the announcement from Alan. So yes folks, Hukilau is complete!! Yma will be onhand to sign autographs and talk to fans. She will not be performing. We are trying to work out a way that we can show some of her classic footage in the Ballrooms on Friday and Saturday as well. Full details to unfold within the next week. |

My flight arrives on Wed. at 8pm and leaves Fri. at 6pm. I'll only be able to attend the Hukilau for a shopping spree either Thurs. or Fri. (because of family commitments). Anyone know - are the vendors open to the public on Thursday at all? |

That's why he is the first act on the bill for Thursday! 7:00 door, 8:00 Charles Phoenix. Then... well, as Christie says, I can't tell you who comes on next. But Haole Kats are after that! And, don't be so quick to run off to the Reef Bar for good drinks: Christie and I had a 90-minute conference call with the hotel least week. The result of it was my sending them a very long and very detailed list of six tropical drink recipes, four of which will make the cut and be served at a 'specialty bar' at Hukilau (the other bars will have standard bar fare). I included stipulations such as "no Bacardi, Captain Morgan's and especially NO Maliubu" (suggested Appleton, St. James, and Cruzan - our rum sponsor), only fresh squeezed lime juice, and even what types of glassware to use. They insist that they are going to make sure that the drinks live up to our standards. Stick around for the Huki-bar! [ Edited by: tikibars 2005-09-23 08:52 ] |

Ok, Lil' help here..... We have a question for anyone who can answer it for us please. If you are not planning on attending either of the two dinner shows at the Mai Kai, can you still go to the happy hours there if you do not have reservations for dinner? We're a bit confused about this. We would like to just enjoy happy hour for drinks in the bar with everyone.....Do we need reservations or pay for this? E-mail that was sent out yesterday below: Mai Kai Reservations! Thanks, Tiki G. |

Tiki G. - Those that have reservations for the dinner shows will be verified at the door of the Mai Kai as they arrive. Unfortunately, since the Dinner Shows are booked with 300 people, we usually cram into the bar like sardines. The Mai Kai has expressed that they will not be able to allow anyone into the Molokai Bar whom does not have a reservation for one of the two shows at the appropriate time. But, here what ya can do......... At 9:00pm the last dinner show will be seated and all in the Molokai will be more calm. We will still have Tongo-hiti playin' it up, King Kukulele, the Intoxicators and the Haole Kats in Samoa and Tahiti (rear dining areas) so there will be plenty of entertaining to enjoy throughout the night. You can come and join us anytime after 9:00pm. Hope this helps and hope we see you the other nights of Hukilau! |

Thanks alot Kiliki for the info. Fastest response ever! So, after 9:00pm is cool then......Never been to the Mai Kai before. Would have been a drag to be down there and not be able to visit all because we did not want to eat;) Of course you will see us about! Starting Thursday night. We'll be in for the haul all weekend. Oh yeah, I have something with your name on it that you asked about. My pleasure. G. [ Edited by: Tiki G. 2005-09-27 10:57 ] |

It's only $9.95 and you can be seated with Tikiphiles from all over the world! And wow, thanks so much for whatever you have for me!! I can't wait to meet ya! |

Kiliki, Yeah it sounds pretty dumb huh! Not attending the dinner show. We just have a hard time sitting still actually, but I guess you are right. I'm convinced. Are reservations still available for the second show that you know of? I have to contact the Mai Kai myself to do this right? Thanks for all your info and "nudges", G. |

Yep - you must call them to make reservations. I think there is maybe 20 seats left - call them right away. Also, the show itself is $9.95 and then whatever you have to eat and drink - just wanted to make sure I clarified. Looking forward to meeting you! |

Kiliki, Will there be some sort of shuttle-type-thing to and from the Mai Kai from/back to the hotels, or will we be responsible for finding our own means of transportation? I'm trying to decide whether or not we should rent a car. Mahalo! [ Edited by: Deery Luau 2005-09-28 09:36 ] |

There are lots of taxis called and everyone piles in and just splits a cab. It's only about a 5 minute ride to the Mai Kai from the hotel. What about the Safari Thatch tour? How far to their place? Do we taxi over to there too? |

Deery, when I checked about two weeks ago renting a car was about a $40 a day minimum for the cheapest thing (with taxes, etc) out of Ft Lauderdale. My Rent A Wreck is about $22 a day total. That is one reason why I am flying to Miami on Thursday. The other reason is a NON-STOP flight from SFO!!! ZAZZ! BTW- anyone wanna pick me up at the Miami airport so I can pick up my Rent a Wreck at RENT-A-WRECK OF MIAMI
ok--I'm sorta kidding! |

Tiki G, you will not regret this decision. The Mai Kai is truly the most grand and spectacular remaining Tiki temple anywhere, and making the trek to Lauderdale and skipping the Mai Kai show is like going all the way to Easter Island and skipping the moai. You won't be dissapointed. Alohabros - as much as I can use that XLR snake and sundry other stuff, I'm afraid I can't help you with your quest for escorts... |

Cabs to and from the Mai Kai are not expensive. It's only a few miles. Since so many Hukilau attendees are staying at the Bahia Mar and Bahia Cabana, I am sure it won't be problematic for people to share cabs for economy. Then you can drink all you want and not worry about getting back! |

Thanks for posting James! Whew, things are certainly busy 'round here! Yes, we usually call taxis for everyone to venture to the Mai Kai. When you arrive to Hukilau, grab a program and check out the full schedule. Depending on what dinner show you are attending is going to determine what time you leave for the Mai Kai. Again, the full schedule will be in the program. As far as the Safari Thatch Tour, I was there today and met with the owner and his wife and you guys are in for an amazing treat! Just wait til you see the ballroom!! Here's a brief description of what you can expect: Safari Thatch Open House! Saturday, October 8 Founded in 1984 by Garth and Laraine Wight, Safari Thatch and Bamboo has, over the years, grown from humble beginnings to be the undisputed leader in the creation of jungle themed environments. They open their doors to Hukilau attendees for a “Behind the Scenes” tour of their facility. With guide Garth Wight himself leading the way, you’ll see all the many types of Bamboo they stock and the processes used to create the amazing samples you find in their showroom. We are very lucky to have this resource here in the Southeast! See new samples and learn how you can outfit your own Tiki Bar while you’re there. The “Behind the Scenes” tour is a real treat! You’ve never seen so much bamboo in your life – and the size of the stuff! Whew! You may sign up for the Safari Thatch Open House at the Hukilau Registration Table on Thursday or Friday. We will call taxis for you to share rides and the cost! Open Reception from 11:00am – 3:00pm Wine and Hors D’oeuvres Behind the Scenes Tour: 11:00am After the Behind the Scenes Tour you can browse the showrooms.
