Heres another one from the Wild, Wild, West t.v. series....Season 1, an episode called "The Two Legged Buffalo"....The tiki tried to kill Mr. West by way of a pressure switch located on a chair, that in turn sent the dart located in the tikis tongue flying into the chair Mr. West was sitting in...close shave, but good ol' James wins in the end!

this is West entering the expensive hotel room

remove the eyeballs and tongue, and whos style tiki is this?

a close up of the tongue

another frame shot

and finally West is putting the dart back in the tiki as not to alarm the enemies that anything had occured....

I still attest, The Wild,Wild West series was one of the greatest t.v. shows ever, and this only adds a little more strength to my claim!haha

THE RIGHT APPROAH (1961)

The late Frankie Vaughn (Let's Make Love) plays a ruthless young Hollywood hopeful who uses his friends (and anyone else handy) as stepping stones on his way to fame as a singing star.

After moving into the communal bachelor pad shared by his brother and three other struggling talents, Vaughn wastes no time in moving in on the girlfriend of one of the guys (Juliet Prowse as a hard-edged hash slinger) only to throw her over for a journalist he hopes will help his career (Martha Hyer).

What makes this film so fun is how transparently sneaky old Vaughn is. He is like a cartoon villain; complete with shifty eves, cheshire cat grin, and light-switch mood swings. All he's missing is a mustache to twirl.

The cliches fly, some bad songs are sung and we get to see Prowse dance a little bit. Mostly we get to see Vaughn be really mean to people, and he makes a delightful bad guy.

Rain (1936)

Joan Crawford, starring as prostitute Sadie Thompson in this adaptation of the Maugham story, is a magnet for all the men on the exotic island of Pago Pago, but fundamentalist preacher Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) wants her to see the error of her ways and repent. When, at long last, she begins to come around to his way of thinking, Davidson himself begins to fall for her when the two become stranded together during a fierce tropical storm.

Tiki in the native scenes.

I watched a classic film the other night that had several scenes in what was called a "chinese restaurant" but appeared to be a polynesian type of place in NYC. I don't know if this restaurant existed or if it was scenery...but it was neat to see eitherway.

The film was The Apartment (1960). It starred Jack Lemon and Shirley McClain (sp?). The whole film was interesting from the perspective of the late 50's/60's era. But, the scenes of Shirley meeting her "lover" in the tiki bar were particularly interesting.

Hadn't seen this one mentioned, at least while searching for "Scorsese"...

Was re-watching Martin Scorsese's CASINO last night, and noticed 2 things:

  1. Sharon Stone's first appearance seems to possibly be at the Peppermill Lounge, with its fire/water thing right next to her.
  2. at one point when they're moving through the casino, they pass by some moai heads and the green neon appears to say AKU AKU (even though that room was at the Stardust).

The end credits indicate the film was shot at the Riviera hotel & casino. Already sent the DVD back to Netflix, or I'd post some screenshots.

Cheers,
Rupe

There is freeware for Mac called - appropriately enough - DVD Capture that lets you do screengrabs from your Apple DVD Player app.

Also VLC PLayer lets you do screen grabs natively, with just a keystroke - and it will play your DVDs as well as avi and all other major video file formats.

Just saw Teenage Diary on Something Weird. It's a rambling short film with a Christian message. A date begins with a young couple discussing Bible verses in his car...Then it's off to the Tiki bar! Several large tikis. Couldn't tell if the restaurant was a real location or a scene. There is a zoom in on a menu that just says "Tiki" on it.

Meanwhile, back at home, the girl's mom and dad are fighting about her date and dress. The dad says he's going out and mom says "You're not going to the Alibi again, not tonight!"

Back at the Tiki bar there is a brief floor show complete with a dancer and flaming torch lighting a pool of fire beneath a large tiki.

Okey-Dokey -

I've been going nuts this past week with nostalgia while watching the first season of Hawaii 5-O on DVD. I dunno if you guys are including TV shows in this thread, but there are so many Tikis in McGarrets Hawaii that I'd be posting frame grabs till the end of time!
Anyway, wanted to share a few of my favorites - I got this mug at an art fair a while back:

Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/proxy-image.php?user_id=4033&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geotiki.com%2Fstuff%2FKoaMug.jpg&w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=71f2354b7498d33589e89e5792103425

Standard Koa souvenir mug. Really like the inscription:
"Al Minn's Fun Camp - 1972
Best All-Around Camper
Clarke Bennett"

I'd like to think we should all strive to be a Best All Around Camper in our day-to-day lives. Imagine my delight when we get a glimpse into a 1968 pawn shop on 5-O:

Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/proxy-image.php?user_id=4033&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geotiki.com%2Fstuff%2FKoaMuginstore.jpg&w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=7bf57e90ca37383025fe27ce662a0997

Yes! My mug's brothers and sisters! All brand-sparkly new!

And while not tiki related, here is another mind blowing Hawaii scene for me:

Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/proxy-image.php?user_id=4033&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geotiki.com%2Fstuff%2Fpier.jpg&w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=380621de0c9d5e545b9512e8d9018804

This is the Makai Research Pier at Makapuu (across the street from Sea Life Park) under construction! Anyone who has taken a drive around Oahu is sure to remember this pier. Very bizarre for me to see being built as my dad's office is on the end of this pier, and I practically grew up on the thing (I was born the year my Koa Mug was inscribed - 1972).

Thanks for peeking -

What a great example of TCers collaborative effort in researching the work of an obscure, unappreciated outsider artist that was related to Tiki. Benzart's stories, the statues in Wayne's backyard, all these links...this is gotta be one of my favorite TC threads ever. An example of how just one strange piece of art can unearth a whole forgotten world of bizarre wonder. Someone should make a book about Van, something to hold in your hands other than just virtual images.

"Attack of the Beast Creatures"...this was made in the mid-80's I believe, and while the designs are not EXACTLY tiki as we know it, there is in fact a very unusual tiki in this film. It belongs to the 6-inch-tall red chattering monsters that inhabit the island and attack any human that wanders along...if you go to the page below you will find a good review and also pictures, including a picture of the famous scene showing all the little 6-inch monsters kneeling and praying in front of their 3-foot-tall deity statue. (!) It is really a moment of jaw-dropping strangeness.

This is a bad, bad movie, no doubt about that, but there is nothing quite like it.

Doesn´t exactly look like a fun and wild Luau. So what is this? The Grumpy Church of Latter Day Tikis?

My husband said he saw a tiki mug on the show "Sports Night". Apparently one of the main characters keeps his pens in one on his desk.

The old cartoon Dick Tracy has an episode called Hawaiian Guy (Hawaiian Eye, get it?). A couple of villains, Mumbles and another whose name I don't recall, try to steal a huge diamond from the top of a moai, which is called Diamond Head. Dick Tracy sends Joe Jitsu to apprehend the criminals.

There is no way this cartoon could be made today. Joe Jitsu contains every bad, racist stereotype of a Mr. Moto-type character you could think of. He uses martial arts to effortlessly slam the bad guys to the ground, while saying "So Solly" and "Excuse Prease".

On the up side, the cartoon does have that early-60s vibe to it.

Six-two and even, over and out!

Is anyone watching HBO's series "JOHN FROM CINCINNATI"? The Yost family residence has a tiki out front of the house, near the driveway. Loads of glass floats both at their residence and surf shop. Cannot find a photo of it yet, but will keep an eye out.

And all that is more than I can tell you about just what the hell is going on with this show! But am enjoying it just the same.

Cheers,
Rupe

[Looked for a general TV thread, but couldn't find one, so posted here. Am hoping to clear out the image of the "Norbert" posting above 'cause that's pretty damn distrubing!]

The movie 40 year old virgin was already mentioned but what wasn't mentioned was the Benihana Budha type mug that Steve Carrol's character was drinking out of while on a date with his love interest.

Yeah, and if you watch closely, Mitch Yost has a really cool carved maoi tiki in his meditation lair out back. I got my eye on YOU!

PS -- John from Cincinati rocks, and has one of the coolest theme songs ever: "Johnny Appleseed" by Joe Strummer

Since this thread has officially been dubbed "Non-Tiki Bar" Tiki spottings in movies, I'll add one I saw the other night. Black Widow with Theresa Russell and Debra Winger. A large Tiki carving can be seen outside of a Hawaiian resort where the girls stay. Other than that, the few highlights of the movie feature Theresa Russell in a bikini and Debra Winger applying CPR to Theresa...

Just saw that too. Never noticed tikis in movies before I joined this board. The Hawaiian rich guy that the girls nabbed was a hottie....the CPR scene didn't do a thing for me.

I just watched the DVD of Night at the Museum with my kids.
It is a OK movie if you have young kids to entertain. It is rated PG but it is all right for all but the very youngest kids.

Right at the very beginning when all the stuff at the Museum comes alive Ben Stiller stop for a few seconds and has a quick exchange with a moving talking Moai head.
