Japanese Ukelele Site - MUST READ!

I LOVE Japanese English. Tikifish, there is a great little book out called "Japanese Jive" by Caroline McKeldin, Tengu Books. It's full of Japanese products like "Nipless" and "Posmic".
I recently had the pleasure of being identified as the arthur of the Book of Tiki...
And a classic e-mail from Japan went:
"We here in Japan LOVE Tiki culture....Could you please tell us what it is?"

I bought all sorts of great products when I was in Tokyo... 'ASSE','Crunky', and 'Vessel in the Fog' Chocolate bars, and NO TIME!!! Gum.

Of course, my favourite souvenirs were the Tiki Tiki Yokohama mugs! I will be going back to Tokyo again this year (if all goes as planned) and hope to visit the other Tiki Tiki location... as well as trying to track down any other Tiki places in Tokyo. I know there is a Trader Vic's, but if anyone knows any other places, please share with the class!

Also on this thread, tikifish, I enjoyed the Tiki Tiki in Yokohama too, but they wouldn't sell me a mug. The Tiki Tiki in Tokyo is almost identical. Also saw the Trader Vics in Tokyo at the New Otani hotel, and it was really nice, especially in the bar area. Cheaper food and actually better decor in the bar area (vs. the dining area) I think. I hope to post some pics sometime! Sadly, no other Tokyo tiki suggestions though.

Well Randy, my success in getting a mug was partly due to my brother being able to speak Japanese, and the fact that it was Christmas... It DID take quite a bit of negotiating (and $30 extra for the pair) even still.

I bet there are more Tiki places in Tokyo... and if not, there are still enough crazy theme restaurants to keep me excited!

Coming in from a slightly different angle is the very fine book 'Japanese Street Slang' by Peter Constantine. It's full of great phrases that make you sound like a Japanese street punk and the vast majority of the phrases would make the average salty sea-dog blush.

One more Japan suggestion for the exotica/bizarro fan. There's a super phonebook sized tome called Roadside Japan by Kyoichi Tsuzuki with great photos and info about off-the-beaten-path stuff to see.

This is an amazon link just for reference, since it shows the book cover, featuring a roadside moai park in Japan, unfortunately pretty far north I think. Amazing! Wish I could've seen it. The book also shows a "Fantasy Museum" in the Nagoya area, an amazing fantasy underwater world museum with a restaurant and unbelievable decor all made with seashells. Hopefully someday I can put up some photos from that place.
