I just bought the Season 2 set (available in PAL format from Amazon UK), and have really noticed the decor of his pad. Classic 50's tiki culture and Henry Mancini's jazz score seem to go well together. (I'm not into hifi, but it looks like he also had a killer 50's setup.) |

Kids, I need some help here: WHICH specific episodes show Peter Gunn's apartment festooned with primitive art!? And if you don't have a screen capture application, can you just snap some photos of your screen? I just watched the 16 episodes of Peter Gunn Set 2 and there is NOTHING Tiki-esque to be found in his or any of the sets - as a matter of fact, the sets are so stagey and boring, it makes sense that the production company called itself "Spartan"! The episode with the "Bamboo Cafe", the episode with the Beatnik diver babes drinking from pineapples and handing out leis to Peter Gunn: Naugatiki: Those "Tiki Gods Co." stills from 5.O are amazing, thank you !!!

This past week's episode of The Finder on Fox featured the exterior and interior of Don The Beachcomber's in HB. Don's was used as an illegal casino in the episode. The Coconut Bar is featured as well as another back or side room. There are shots from across the street and of a back entrance. [ Edited by: Lake Surfer 2012-02-04 14:40 ] |

The US sets (with 16 edited-for-syndication first season episodes each) on A&E are not what you need. You want the UK collection #2, which contains the entire 38-episode second season of the series. (The UK sets are region-free, but they are in PAL.) There are at least two episodes that show off Pete's pad. (I'm still only on disc 2, so there are more than 20 episodes left.) In season 2, episode 5 - "Death Is A Red Rose" - A thug shows up at Pete's place and the two men fight it out. You can see some primitive things on the shelves in the background. (The larger items look more African than Polynesian.) There is a also a close-up of a wooden head that the camera focuses on as the battle wages in the BG. A few episodes later (season 2, episode 10 - "The Game"), Pete's friends gather at his place for a party. The same wooden head is featured again. This time, one of Pete's beatnik friends tries to get friendly with it... If other examples turn up in future episodes, I'll post them here. Wow, thank you so much for those great images, Michelle! I can't play PAL on my DVD player in the U.S. And those statues are indeed all African, not Oceanic art. But this finding does support my general "Tiki Modern" theory. :) That Sponge Bob Tiki Land episode is most unfortunate. Why would a show that was the first to incorporate some really cool Tiki elements, like Squidward's house, and an A-frame movie theater with Tiki bathroom sinks, stoop so low in its Tiki designs with badly-rendered, 2-dimensional Party Store-colored Tikis !!? This should have been an ode to mod-cartoony Tiki art, and it's not. It might be OK for kids, but where were the adult designers that bought the Book of Tiki multiple times when it came out, at 8-Ball right down the street from Nickelodeon? I can only fathom that, like back ground designs often are, it was farmed out to China. These Tikis bear the hallmark symptoms of non-Amercian, internet-sourced Tiki. |

Here in Japan, the old Mission: Impossible series is now being shown on a cable station called "Super Drama TV". Last night, a sixth-season episode called "Double Dead" was shown. The episode is set in Hawaii (but filmed on the Paramount lot in LA). There is a scene inside a restaurant, complete with hula dancers and cocktails being served in pineapples. The best thing about the episode is the main villain's house is actually the Brady Bunch living room :)- all dressed up Polynesian style. (Both Paramount series were sill in production when the show was filmed.) The whole episode is up at YouTube: http://youtu.be/X7cCZWuB0C0 |

I just got a tape from about 1962 of the Tonight Show with the Mai-Kai Mystery Girl on it. It is incredible stuff! Come to Hukilau and see my presentation and you can see it all, hear the back story of Johnny and how this happened, and meet the man who made it possible. No, not Mr. Carson, but his good friend Jack. |

I saw your presentation at Tiki Oasis, and it was very informative/entertaining... the mystery bowl presentation was a sight to see. Michelle66 - thanks for those screenshots... that is amazing! The Brady Bunch house all done-up Tiki-style. It's got everything - witco bar stools, rattan bar, carved Tikis, yellow Chinese tiles... sweet! -Trad'r Bill |

New poster on this great forum. Great thread and good point Bigbro we all must beware and learn to distinguish between genuine ancient Tiki, Polynesian Pop Tiki and "Party Store" Tiki which I call Tiky-Tacky(trash/crap) and not to be confused with Kitschy-Catchy(little better with some historic value)or Wiki-Wacky(just plain crazy) |

Still watching TV...saw The Simpsons tonight, Sunday, March 4, they had a spoof of Trader Joe's done up with bamboo, a Tiki, Hawaii shirt employees, and in one corner a net full of what appears to be mini Japanese fishing floats and attached to the side of it is a shrunken head! Hawaiian shirt-clad employees wrap Apoo in a Hawaiian shirt to restrain him And here is the Tiki (in red box) sorry it's so blurry, The Simpson's moves fast |

Aaaah, the fugitive! That was a "street sweeper" in Germany when I was little! The FINAL episode, after 120 episodes of being on the run and chasing the one-armed man! And now, exhausted, holding onto columns carved by Jim Casey... :) I loved the original Fugitive show... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdiQ2ihZ1mE&feature=related And lookey here, what we walk into at 18:08 minutes of the above episode: Though this tropical hideaway is sadly bereft of Tikis, it is a pretty nice set for TV show. |

I know this is probably not the TV watched by most PolyPopsters, but Robert Jebediah Freeman of Adult Swim's "The Boondocks" has a Tiki Bar in his basement; Well, I don't see any tikis. And the ceiling is white. But there is a big netted float on the right and the yellow chair could be interpreted as MCM  |

Nothing that spectacular but figured it should be cataloged. Last night's episode of Breaking In on Fox had a party scene with a few Tiki items in the background. Too early for screen-caps on the episode as it just aired. Also lots of Indiana Jones references for those 'gear heads' out there...you know who you are. |

The Venture Brothers (on Adult Swim) are full of MCM Jet age awesome-ness (seriously, they go to a LOT of trouble with incidental backgrounds). This scene from a swinger's "key party" has a mug, but there are some other references sprinkled throughout the series. |
