Pine has such a dramatic grain - you can use that to your advantage. Great start.

Andy, I always figured you were using paints, due to the opacity. What kind of stains do you use?

Thanks guys & Wendy! Nice to be carving something other than flat.

Bill, the colors are typically water based craft paints watered down some, so the woodgrain isn't sacrificed. The Wahine is starting to take over that part of the process. She has the patience in the family.

Painting techniques are not something that is discussed much on this forum. I have had better luck finding info on painting at http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com. I'm not sure why most modern tiki carvers don't use paint more often. It can make a good carving great and crappy carving better.

Well, that was timely. I was just thinking about PMing you to ask about the paint. I've had very nice results with the pine and then there are the those with beetle larvea.

P
pjc5150 posted on 12/11/2012

I never used paint, mainly because to me the wood itself is a big part of what's cool about tikis.

For me, paint kinda ruins that.....if you're gonna paint 'em & cover the natural beauty of the wood, why not just make 'em out of plastic or something...

Thank you!

Just to be clear, I use color tints on the foliage and water features on the panels, not on the Tikis. Tikis get mixed stains and maybe some white accents from time to time.

I agree Jeff, Most of the flourescent sidewalk chalk tikis are coming out of Florida and yeah, they bother me. Should call them "Caribe Idols", not Tikis.

Waiting for this week to be over. Going another inch or so deeper into this Tiki soon.

Thanks kids. Weekends are such a commodity around here these days. Its hard to get any time to make dust fly.

I got a little time in on this older (2005) panel I had started and threw to the side.

At less than an inch thick, it's been a challenging lil piece. More refinement forthcoming.
