New for 2017, we have a new feature covering all the major Tiki events around the world. Skip ahead to page 8 for details ...
Original post ... The Atomic Grog now features a new weekly feature, publishing early every Monday, with the latest news and events from around the world of Tiki, concentrating on the U.S. East Coast. We'll look back at the highlights of the previous week, and look ahead to what's coming up. There's also a list of all the major upcoming events, plus a spotlight on some of our favorite artists, bands/music, Tiki bars, rums/cocktails, and websites.
We also previewed this week's Tiki Mondays With Miller in New York City and Tiki Horror Nights in Miami. There's also info on two Florida events happening this weekend: Revenge of the Tiki IV in Fort Lauderdale and Planet of the Lost Tikis in Indian Harbor Beach. This week's features included Bosko Hrnjak, A Mountain of Crushed Ice, The Tiki Delights, and the new book on The Kahiki. The rum of the week, The Real McCoy 5, was featured in La Floridita Daiquiri. This week's update includes news on the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival's sponsorship of a “Rum Reef” off Miami’s Key Biscayne, an announcement about Luau at the Lake, and a new Derek Yaniger mug being released today by Tiki Farm. This week's features include Tiki Central, the Alika Lyman Group, and Hala Kahiki. Thank you. It is important to remind people of the grandeur of the Hala Kahiki, it is not mentioned often enough, yet it is one of the most amazing original Tiki temples still in existence.
I remember well my first visit together with Jeff Berry, on my 1996 expedition to photograph the Kona Kai, and the Kahiki in Columbus for the Book of Tiki, and the photo Safari for Tiki Modern in 2003, where James Teitelbaum assisted me with the lighting.
It is simply amazing that this place is still up and running!

Hi Hurricane, I don't believe I've seen any mention of The Tiki Hideaway in Charlotte, NC on your blog. It opened in December and has a thread here in the "locating tiki" section. It may not have the celebrity ownership/management of Lost Lake, but it is definitely tiki and deserving of mention. Thanks |

Aloha JenTiki, The Tiki Hideaway was mentioned in the second "Week in Tiki" post as one of the featured "Tiki links of the week". There's a link to a nice story from CharlotteFive.com that I enjoyed. I'll admit, this was the first I'd heard of the bar, but it sounds great. So expect more mentions in the future. |

Aloha Sven! I've yet to have the pleasure of immersing myself in the Hala Kahiki, but I'll admit I've been mesmerized by the place since first reading about it and seeing your photos in Tiki Modern. I agree that in this case (and some others), we can overlook any cocktail shortcomings.

Lots of news to report this week: The top story is the latest on The Hukilau, including the new website and tickets now on sale for the Tiki Tower Takeover and cruise with Dawn Wells of ‘Gilligan’s Island.'
The Tiki Tower Takeover features four of the country’s top barmen – Jeff Beachbum Berry (Latitude 29, New Orleans), Martin Cate (Smuggler’s Cove, San Francisco), Paul McGee (Lost Lake, Chicago) and Brian Miller (Tiki Mondays with Miller, New York City) – as they each serve up a cocktail in the revolving Pier Top Lounge on the 17th floor of the Pier 66 hotel on the Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway on Thursday, June 11. And just announced: The Hukilau will welcome actress Dawn Wells from Gilligan’s Island for a “Three Hour Tour” Cruise on Fort Lauderdale’s inland waterways. Limited to 300 people, the cruise aboard a yacht will include open bar, food, Tiki tunes and more. The event is set for Friday, June 12. South Florida appears to be the nexus of the Tiki universe this week ...
Friday's happy hour features Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel, an acclaimed duo who have spent the past two years performing and teaching ukulele at festivals around the world. On Saturday, The Mai-Kai will serve a flight of cocktails that have never appeared on the acclaimed 58-year-old tropical drink menu. Also upcoming this week in South Florida: A grand opening reception at the new permanent home of the "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History" exhibit; and the 12th annual Polynesian Cultural Festival.

But the big news, beside the Judge’s Choice award won by Brian Miller, was the New York City bartender’s announcement that he will soon be leaving the Big Apple for Los Angeles. The Week in Tiki (March 16, 2015): Miller to remain in Big Apple; Tiki weekenders sell out in Chicago, N.J. This week’s top story is the sellout of two upcoming events: the Chicago Area Tiki Tour, and the Vintage Tiki Weekend in Wildwood, N.J. Also, tickets for Tiki Kon in the Pacific Northwest are selling fast. Tiki Kon is also looking for bartenders to complete in the next Iron Tikitender contest.
Speaking of bartenders, award-winning Tiki barman Brian Miller has had a change of heart and decided to not make a move to the West Coast. The Tiki pirate said he realizes that “New York City is where I want to be right now.” Did someone make him an offer he couldn't refuse? We also have updates on Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace swapping locations in the Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland, and a Tiki disappointment in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s historic bars contest.

Ryan, the orgeat is great stuff. Probably the best I've had outside of homemade. Which isn't surprising since it's essentially Adam's homemade orgeat that he brought to market. It's very rich, unlike some of the thin commercial products. I haven't tried the Small Hand Foods orgeat, but I've heard it's comparable in quality. The only issue is the high shipping costs. Hurricane Hayward, I really enjoyed the Tutu rum Punch, I like looking for recipes with grapefruit juice in them since I have a white grapefruit tree in the back yard. This was a real smooth and tasty drink. |

Mahalo! That's one of those lesser known Trader Vic drinks that you don't hear much about. He didn't use grapefruit much. FYI, if you're looking for drinks with grapefruit, on The Mai-Kai menu check out the Zombie, Special Planters Punch, Yeoman's Grog, Mutiny, The Hukilau, Black Magic, Bora Bora, Mara-Amu and Floridita Daiquiri. I also like the retired Big Bamboo. Okole maluna! |

The Week in Tiki (April 20-26, 2015): Rum fest invades Miami, South Florida’s underwater Easter Island, Shag goes to ‘The Twilight Zone’
As expected, the Miami Rum Festival dominated the news this week, but an unlikely story about giant Easter Island-style moai being sunk off the coast of South Florida certainly piqued our interest. Also worth noting is the return of the Chicago Area Tiki Tour, plus the upcoming release of a limited-edition print by Shag that pays tribute to The Twilight Zone.
Thousands of enthusiasts, experts and VIPs congregated in Miami last week for the seventh annual Miami Rum Renaissance Festival. The Doubletree by Hilton Miami Airport Convention Center was ground zero for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday grand tastings, with hundreds of rums exhibited, tasted and judged.
Weekly features spotlight artist Dawn Frasier, the Bahama Bob’s Rumstyles blog, the exotica and hapa haole sounds of Kinky Waikiki, and Miami Beach cocktail bar The Broken Shaker.

The Week in Tiki (April 27-May 3, 2015): Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto grand opening The arrival of new signature Tiki mugs marks the official opening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort this week.
Also in the news is a seminar at Trader Vic’s in Atlanta, the new Tiki Magazine, the New England Tequila & Rum Festival, and a list of the 150 best bars in America.

Hello! I'm new to this site. I'm a huge fan of tiki bars and incorporating ideas into them. Anyway I've been hearing a lot about this new tiki bar that is opening up in Las Vegas. Apparently its going to be like the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland?! Has anyone else heard about it? |

The year’s two major East Coast events, The Hukilau in Fort Lauderdale and Ohana: Luau At The Lake in upstate New York, dominate June’s news. We have a full, day-by-day recap of The Hukilau (June 10-14) and highlights of Ohana (June 25-28).

The Week in Tiki (July 27-Aug. 9, 2015): Tiki Oasis blasts off, plus Summer event recaps, more rum and cocktail news The summer Tiki event season reaches its climax this week with the big kahuna, Tiki Oasis in San Diego ... We have a full preview, including a day-by-day preview of all the headlining entertainment, a list of all the symposiums, and info on Tiki Oasis Radio. The collaboration between ETI Radio and Spyrate Radio is broadcasting via a low-powered FM transmission at the event, plus a live stream at TikiOasisRadio.com and various apps ... Late July and early August was perhaps the busiest time of the year for Tiki events, and we have recaps of some of the more memorable:

We have some breaking news ... Shag to help toast The Hukilau’s 15th anniversary, The Mai-Kai’s 60th in 2016 The Hukilau will celebrate its 15th anniversary in June 2016 with a historic celebration of Tiki culture and the 60th anniversary of The Mai-Kai, joined by a very special guest artist. Shag, aka Josh Agle, will provide his artistic talents and also participate in several special events at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 hotel, organizer Christie “Tiki Kiliki” White announced while launching an updated website. It will be “a celebration of epic proportions,” she said.
Shag will present a symposium and also host an event called Shag’s SkyLounge in the hotel’s iconic 17th floor rotating Pier Top Lounge, White said. Guests will become totally immersed in the world of Shag, essentially becoming part of a live painting in the mid-century-styled penthouse that overlooks Fort Lauderdale Beach and the nearby port. Shag will also host several signings of his books and new prints for the 15th anniversary.
