Week in Tiki (April 16-30, 2016): New Beachbum Berry glassware, ‘Sippin’ Safari’ 10-year anniversary edition; plus event and Tiki bar news, more!

Beachbum Berry’s Sippin’ Safari, the underrated classic 2007 cocktail book that helped set the stage for today’s robust revival of Tiki bars across the country, will be re-released in the fall as a 10-year anniversary special edition, the author confirmed. Former screenwriter Jeff “Beachbum” Berry’s fourth book was his first full-color, story-driven guide to the history of tropical mixology.

Meanwhile, some cool new glassware was added to the Beachbum Berry barware collection on the Cocktail Kingdom website: A coconut mug featuring the Beachbum Berry logo, and Beachbum Berry Zombie Glasses.

Sailor Cook, the official 2016 Tiki Kon mug by VanTiki, is inspired by the Tikis of the Cook Islands and honors the brave GIs who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Upcoming event news includes Tiki by the Sea, Ohana: Luau At The Lake, Tiki Kon, Southern Surf Stomp, and the Surf Guitar 101 Convention.

All of the above have a connection to The Hukilau this week, along with ...

The website of the week is home of the upcoming book Mai-Kai: History & Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant.

Our rum of the week, Ron Diplomático Reserva, is featured in La Guildive by Martin Cate, a cocktail from his new book Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki. Also check out our initial review ...

Smuggler’s Cove book sets a new standard for Tiki in the 21st century

Comprehensive, colorful, and full of so much information it may make your head spin (especially when sampling the many potent cocktail recipes), Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki is essential reading for anyone with a passionate interest in the Tiki revival and its spectacular cocktails.

Written by Martin Cate, with assistance from wife Rebecca Cate, Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki is the story of how this Tiki power couple rose to prominence and ended up opening one of the world most acclaimed rum bars in San Francisco. But it’s so much more than just the story of a bar. At 352 pages and hard-bound like a college textbook, it could be considered the new bible for home enthusiasts and bartenders alike. But I’ll bet you’ve never read a textbook this fun.

From the ashes of the Week in Tiki (and the Month in Tiki) rises The Tiki Times. Still ambitious, but more practical, this monthly guide to what’s going on across the world of Tiki culture will hopefully be a definitive resource of where to find special events that touch on topics of interest to many Tikiphiles. You’ll find all the major Tiki festivals, plus smaller gatherings along with events that scratch our itch for rum and cocktails, surf and rockabilly music, mid-century modern design, even Disney. And don’t forget authentic Polynesian culture, the well from which Tiki springs. The biggest will get extended coverage as “spotlight events.” Coming soon: A look ahead at the full year, plus monthly recaps.

The latest news on The Hukilau 2017 ...

The Hukilau, the East Coast’s largest and longest-running Tiki weekender, has confirmed an all-new lineup for one of its signature events during the 16th annual festivities in Fort Lauderdale in June. When the acclaimed Tiki Tower Takeover returns to the revolving rooftop ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 for a third straight year, it will feature four new Tiki bar teams and a special master of ceremonies, globetrotting “rum ambassador” Ian Burrell.

Click here to see the new lineup ...
http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2017/02/20/exclusive-the-hukilaus-tiki-tower-takeover-to-feature-rum-ambassador-ian-burrell-international-flair/

The international theme of the Tiki Tower Takeover will carry though to the music as well. While a full lineup and schedule will not be announced for several weeks, one of the headlining bands has already been confirmed: Canadian instrumental surf band The Surfrajettes ...

The full lineup of symposium presenters is still being finalized, but one returning author has already been announced: Tim “Swanky” Glazner will present more fascinating facts and stories that came out of his years of research that resulted in the acclaimed "Mai-Kai: History and Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant." For 2017, Glazner plans something new and special: “The real history from the mouths of those who lived it.” He’ll host a panel discussion featuring important figures from the history of The Mai-Kai and beyond. This once-in-a-lifetime event will let you hear first-hand memories and “tales of the high life in the mid-century” that go beyond the stories in the book. Glazner will also likely be leading special walking tours at The Mai-Kai.

Also returning are Fort Lauderdale artists Tom Fowner and Will Anders, who will offer hands-on symposiums that allow villagers to learn about Tiki art and craftsmanship. And resurfacing again for 2017 is another favorite of villagers at The Hukilau: The special swimshows at The Wreck Bar in the B Ocean Resort by Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid and her pod of aquaticats.

Tiki Tony, The Hukilau’s official artist for 2017, has been hard at work on new designs and merchandise. The California artist has created a dozen different possible Tiki mug concepts, which were posted on a special site. The mugs will once again be crafted and produced by Eekum Bookum. Click here to take a poll and vote for your favorite:

Also on tap for 2017 are special rum tastings, both at the Bazaar and at other locations. Rum ambassador Burrell is sure to lend his expertise. Pop-up bars from around the country will also be featured in Friday afternoon’s Rum Island Pool Party, a sequel to last year’s Tiki Road Trip Pool Party. Special guest bars will also be featured in the Friday High Tide event in the Pier 66 Panorama Ballroom.

Three new bands – two from Florida and one all the way from Brazil – were confirmed in separate announcements over the past several weeks. They join the previously announced Canadian instrumental surf band The Surfrajettes as the major “out-of-town” bands on the schedule. Here’s a look at the newly added groups:

The Dead Rocks – This trio of stylish gents from Brazil has been tearing up the surf scene for more than 14 years, taking their spin on classic instrumental rock worldwide.

The Mermers – This four-piece from Gainesville, Fla., emerged in late 2015, filling a void by specializing in the darker side of surf.

The Stolen Idols – How often do you hear classic exotica, performed live as it should be – with full instrumentation and reverence for the original arrangements?

Schedule still in the works, but here’s what we know now
Organizers have said the daily schedule will follow roughly the same format as last year. Based on all of the announced performers and info on TicketLeap, we were able to map out this tentative schedule to help those who are planning their hotel and ticket purchases:

There's the latest blog on The Hukilau 2018 ...

The Hukilau 2018 symposiums to include Disney imagineer, Tiki on TV

Polynesian Pop has always been deeply ingrained in American culture, from Tiki’s mid-century heyday through today. This symbiotic relationship will be explored in colorful detail during special symposiums at The Hukilau, the 17th annual Tiki weekender happening June 6-10 in Fort Lauderdale.

Among the special presentations that are going on sale today at TheHukilau.com are “Travel with Trader Sam” hosted by Disney imagineer Kyle Barnes and “The Golden Age of Tiki and the South Pacific on Television” with film and video collector Ron Ferrell.

Disney’s Kyle Barnes was art director of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney World and Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at Disneyland. He also oversaw the 2015 refurbishment of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Orlando (left). (Contributed photos)
