Beachbum Berry’s Sippin’ Safari, the underrated classic 2007 cocktail book that helped set the stage for today’s robust revival of Tiki bars across the country, will be re-released in the fall as a 10-year anniversary special edition, the author confirmed. Former screenwriter Jeff “Beachbum” Berry’s fourth book was his first full-color, story-driven guide to the history of tropical mixology.
Meanwhile, some cool new glassware was added to the Beachbum Berry barware collection on the Cocktail Kingdom website: A coconut mug featuring the Beachbum Berry logo, and Beachbum Berry Zombie Glasses.
Upcoming event news includes Tiki by the Sea, Ohana: Luau At The Lake, Tiki Kon, Southern Surf Stomp, and the Surf Guitar 101 Convention.
April’s highlights include Miami Rum Festival, The Atomic Grog’s fifth anniversary party at The Mai-Kai, the Bacardi cocktail competition and many other events across the country, including the Tiki-Ti's 55th anniversary, Atlanta Trader Vic's 40th anniversary, and Forbidden Island's 10th anniversary

Like the first major college football bowl game (but a lot more colorful), Tiki Caliente kicked off the annual Tiki event season in style with its eighth gathering of the tribe in the tropical mid-century splendor of Palm Springs on May 12-15. Expanded to four days at the historic Caliente Tropics resort, the intimate, sold-out event also featured a pre-party at Tonga Hut as well as more symposiums, an eclectic lineup of performers, art shows, vendors and the usual festive room parties.
EVENT PREVIEW: Step back into the WWII era at Tiki Kon in Portland The northwest Tiki scene is gearing up for the 14th annual Tiki Kon, happening July 8-10 in Portland. Themed to Polynesian Pop’s roots in the post-World War II era and the USO, the eclectic event is centered at a new host hotel, the Red Lion Hotel On The River. Guests can enjoy Tiki-themed music, art and fashion, with a rollicking camp show, surf and lounge bands, educational symposiums, themed food and drinks, vendors from around the world, and the longest-running home bar tour of its kind.
EVENT PREVIEW: It’s all about the cocktails at massive industry event in New Orleans Everything is bigger and better in New Orleans, especially when alcohol and cocktails are involved. Friday featured the Demerara Float lost cocktail, plus Swanky's exclusive walking tour.
Tiki Diablo showed off his special tribute bowl in The Molokai lounge ... ... and The Atomic Grog mixed up the Big Bamboo at a special room party:
On Saturday, the line for books was long: And the presentation was well-received ... While more lost cocktails were consumed ... And Mai-Kai legends returned to perform. The dinner show was the perfect finale ...

From the ashes of the Week in Tiki (and the Month in Tiki) rises The Tiki Times. Still ambitious, but more practical, this monthly guide to what’s going on across the world of Tiki culture will hopefully be a definitive resource of where to find special events that touch on topics of interest to many Tikiphiles. You’ll find all the major Tiki festivals, plus smaller gatherings along with events that scratch our itch for rum and cocktails, surf and rockabilly music, mid-century modern design, even Disney. And don’t forget authentic Polynesian culture, the well from which Tiki springs. The biggest will get extended coverage as “spotlight events.” Coming soon: A look ahead at the full year, plus monthly recaps. The latest news on The Hukilau 2017 ...
The Hukilau, the East Coast’s largest and longest-running Tiki weekender, has confirmed an all-new lineup for one of its signature events during the 16th annual festivities in Fort Lauderdale in June. When the acclaimed Tiki Tower Takeover returns to the revolving rooftop ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 for a third straight year, it will feature four new Tiki bar teams and a special master of ceremonies, globetrotting “rum ambassador” Ian Burrell. Click here to see the new lineup ... The international theme of the Tiki Tower Takeover will carry though to the music as well. While a full lineup and schedule will not be announced for several weeks, one of the headlining bands has already been confirmed: Canadian instrumental surf band The Surfrajettes ...
The full lineup of symposium presenters is still being finalized, but one returning author has already been announced: Tim “Swanky” Glazner will present more fascinating facts and stories that came out of his years of research that resulted in the acclaimed "Mai-Kai: History and Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant." For 2017, Glazner plans something new and special: “The real history from the mouths of those who lived it.” He’ll host a panel discussion featuring important figures from the history of The Mai-Kai and beyond. This once-in-a-lifetime event will let you hear first-hand memories and “tales of the high life in the mid-century” that go beyond the stories in the book. Glazner will also likely be leading special walking tours at The Mai-Kai.
Also returning are Fort Lauderdale artists Tom Fowner and Will Anders, who will offer hands-on symposiums that allow villagers to learn about Tiki art and craftsmanship. And resurfacing again for 2017 is another favorite of villagers at The Hukilau: The special swimshows at The Wreck Bar in the B Ocean Resort by Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid and her pod of aquaticats.
Tiki Tony, The Hukilau’s official artist for 2017, has been hard at work on new designs and merchandise. The California artist has created a dozen different possible Tiki mug concepts, which were posted on a special site. The mugs will once again be crafted and produced by Eekum Bookum. Also on tap for 2017 are special rum tastings, both at the Bazaar and at other locations. Rum ambassador Burrell is sure to lend his expertise. Pop-up bars from around the country will also be featured in Friday afternoon’s Rum Island Pool Party, a sequel to last year’s Tiki Road Trip Pool Party. Now on sale: Ian Burrell teaches rum and cocktails, symposiums, arts & crafts Tickets to three symposiums plus two arts & crafts classes were made available March 1, including a rum and cocktail history lesson with international rum ambassador Ian Burrell. Here's a rundown on everything that's now on sale: Symposium: The History of Rum in 10 Cocktails with Ian Burrell ($40) – Friday, June 9, at 2 p.m. History doesn’t need to be boring. The global rum ambassador will take The Hukilau’s villagers on a journey through time via 10 classic cocktails. Symposium: The Mai-Kai’s Untold Stories with Tim “Swanky” Glazner ($20) – Friday, June 9, at noon. The Dead Rocks – This trio of stylish gents from Brazil has been tearing up the surf scene for more than 14 years, taking their spin on classic instrumental rock worldwide. Tickets to see MeduSirena, aka Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid, and her pod of aquaticats at The Wreck Bar at the B Ocean Resort went on sale April 1. There are two events on the schedule: An adults-only burlesque-themed swimshow on Wednesday, June 7; and an all-ages show on Thursday, June 8. Tickets are limited, so get yours now:

More Hukilau news has been posted to the blog, including an updated schedule with a new late-night event, a special drawing and silent auction, the addition of The Hula Girls to the band lineup, and lots of sneak peeks at the official merchandise by by Tiki Tony. Also, we've got details on a special presentation that I'll be doing at the finale on June 11 at The Mai-Kai. We'll also be enjoying three "lost cocktails" from The Mai-Kai's 1956 menu, plus live surf tunes from Skinny Jimmy Stingray.

I've been tardy posting the July events and news, but now is a very good time to do so since we have results of the Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail. The July event guide features not only a full recap of Tales, but news and previews of Tiki and surf music events all over the country - from Exotica 10 Years After in Chicago, to Tiki Night at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, to the Spirit of Tiki Cocktail Festival in London, to some lesser-known events ...
The month closes next weekend with to SoCal events: Another Parking Lot Sale and Art Show at the Tonga Hut in Hollywood, themed to the Kon-Tiki Expedition. And the International Surf Classic in San Jose featuring Slacktone and The Kilaueas ...
But this week, all eyes have been on New Orleans for the 15th annual Tales of the Cocktail. We selected our favorite rum and Tiki events, then added photos and coverage from some of the lucky attendees ...
As usual, Tiki and rum were well-represented in the 11th annual Spirited Awards on July 22, considered to be the Oscars of cocktail awards shows. Among those making the final four in their respective categories were "Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki" (Best New Cocktail & Bartending Book), Paul McGee of Lost Lake in Chicago (Best Bar Mentor), Ian Burrell (Best International Brand Ambassador), Trailer Happiness in London (Best International High Volume Cocktail Bar), and Plantation O.F.T.D. Martin Cate and Rebecca Cate take home another victory for their Smuggler's Cove book, plus a deserved win for fellow writer Wayne Curtis tonight at the Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail. Kudos also to Trailer Happiness in London, Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Co. in Miami Beach, along with all the winners!

Spirited mash-up: Rum Renaissance Festival moves next door to The Hukilau in Fort Lauderdale, creating ultimate rum and Tiki weekend in June 2018 After nine years in Miami-Dade County, the country's largest celebration of cane spirits is moving up the coast to link up with the East Coast's most esteemed gathering of Polynesian Pop and Tiki enthusiasts. June 2018 promises a monumental mash-up when the Rum Renaissance Festival and The Hukilau collide near Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Due to time constraints, the 2018 calendar will be limited and include only major, special events and not be broken down with a new story every month. We will make sure this list is always updated, so you can bookmark and refer here whenever you need to know when and where the big events are happening: It’s a good thing that the Tiki scene has become so robust. It's nearly impossible to follow every event in every town. The Hukilau 2018 symposiums to include Disney imagineer, Tiki on TV Polynesian Pop has always been deeply ingrained in American culture, from Tiki’s mid-century heyday through today. This symbiotic relationship will be explored in colorful detail during special symposiums at The Hukilau, the 17th annual Tiki weekender happening June 6-10 in Fort Lauderdale. Among the special presentations that are going on sale today at TheHukilau.com are “Travel with Trader Sam” hosted by Disney imagineer Kyle Barnes and “The Golden Age of Tiki and the South Pacific on Television” with film and video collector Ron Ferrell.
Guests who buy multi-day passes will get first shot at these and other educational activities, including Okole Maluna Cocktail Academy classes and rum tastings, craft classes with noted artists, plus many other hands-on activities. Also going on sale are tickets to the three aquatic performances by Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid and her pod of aquaticats at The Wreck Bar at the nearby B Ocean Resort.
