Wow - I picked this up from Adam Kempa's blog.... Check out this link: "Amazon launched a new feature today that is impossibly cool: They've integrated their yellow pages and Mapquest with a database of images enabling users to visually scroll up and down the block. You can see an example of what I'm talking about here, just mouse-over the sequence of images along the bottom of the page." My link above (if you keep clicking to the left) will take you directly in front of our building. I wonder why it stops on the previous corner? Also - if you keep clicking to the left down Alameda (about 20 frames) you'll be standing in front of Bob's Big Boy #49! Here's a link to an auto repair shop on the block next to our old office building, which you can see if you click right a boxes to the 'Cast And Crew' building - not terribly exciting - but interesting. At this point it seems you have to type in a business (as opposed to just typing in your home address) and navigate down the street.... But pretty cool, no? |

Freaky cool That would be great worked into Critiki. Getting a visual of places you're trying to find would be killer. It can be a hassle sometimes when you don't know what to look for. Bah.. tried to post the Tiki Ti on there. You can find it, it's just not listed as that location. Funky. Not quite perfect, but darn nice. [ Edited by: tikimonkey on 2005-01-27 14:03 ] |

That's a great idea, tikimonkey! After work, I'll take a look at this and see what I can come up with. I've also been working on making some changes to picture management in Critiki, and one of the changes is to flag "street views" of a location for exactly the reason you describe. I'm intrigued about the possibility of incorporating this Amazon feature. |

Here's Lava Lounge in Seattle: And here's a link to a page explaining how they did it, and giving a better idea of current coverage: |

Holy shi-t. That's my scooter, and my gas station, and where I pee when I'm too drunk to make it up to my apartment. Okay, so I lied about the last one. |

i was thinking about this this morning ~ based on what that last link showed, the vehicles documenting the blocks might not be obvious to passers-by that they are taking photographs. imagine a person is photographed and later finds that their image is posted for the scutiny of the entire world. will this person have any legal recourse to have themselves removed since they did not give thier permission? perhaps the evolving technology will "photoshop" people out to prevent this in the future. fer example this guy a block down from tiki bob sf. now his cigar is locked in digital history. I think he jumped into the frame 'cause he wanted to look cool standing next to that bitchin' SUV.... "He's sooo money!" on a side note, every time that guy appears it kills me! I never get tired of that sight gag! [ Edited by: stuff-o-rama on 2005-01-28 19:58 ] |

Same here. Best 'other peoples' Disney photo' EVER! Have we ever given him a name? I think someone once referred to him as the "Bring In The Funk Guy." |

Ok. Here's the scoop: I found the Disney photos at a garage sale in a scrapbook. The same garage-sale that Doctor Z found the infamous, never-used Zeppelin ticket. Here are the Disney photos from Grad Nite, 1974: We know he was the close friend of "Prom Boy", aka "Grad Nite Boy", who took the photos and who's scrapbook this was and who was damn funky himsef for a white boy: But who was "Bring Da Funk Guy"? Luckilly, the scrapbook provided this news clipping: "Funk Man" is really Austin Perryman, Highschool Senior, Class of 1974, President of his own business - "Glo-w-Rite Candle Company". I had friends like Austin in highschool. Self-sufficient, self-assured young men who looked and acted 5 years older than anyone else at school. Maybe they ran the school newspaper or had an outside job to pay for living expenses, since they lived independent from their parents. Probably had a car before anyone else. Really cool guys. I would have been his friend for sure. But you can still call him "Bring Da Funk Guy" if you like. [ Edited by: Sabu The Coconut Boy on 2005-02-01 18:30 ] |

that raises a good question as to whether amazon is violating the rights of people whose pictures are now posted online. the general rule is a person or company cannot use another person's recognizable image for financial gain. The question is first, whether these people are recognizable and second, whether amazon is promoting a business. One could say that yellow pages posted online is more of a community service; but generally the yellow pages are put out by for-profit companies, aren't they? Legal authority loosely cribbed from the internet: |

I agree with Dangergirl - this is a potential lawsuit waiting to happen.... All it takes is one litigious person to bringthe whole thing to a halt.... Of course, they could get around this by blurring peoples faces, I suppose.... So - who's gonna contact Austin Perryman & tell him he is famous??????? |
