Wow, those water sculptures are great, never heard of THAT concept. Those Hawaiian tourist art makers sure were magicians: They could turn mere plastic into wood or into lava, and now: Water!

Has anyone ever heard anything about the formula they based their Made with Lava claims on, like how many sprinkles of ground lava they added to a vat of molten black plastic to make it "Legends in Lava"...and did they actually ad wood shavings to create "Hapa Wood"?

The text of that magazine art is great, too!

Nice one Freddie. Poster girl? Eh? Care to elaborate?

Thanks Freddie,
You are THEE in-house expert on CJ's. That Don Gallacher was one busy guy. Seems like no matter how long you've been looking at cocojoes, there's always something new (that was old).

Thanks to everyone who keeps posting pics on this thread.

What the ...!? First of all, it is great to find out Hawaii has so many native trees with cool names, so that part is very educational. But how the heck can they make the claim that they made them ALL merge into plastic figurines? I think you're right, they must have been smoking Hapa Weed!

Just got this little gal. Was wondering if I could get an ID on the maker. Coco Joe, Hip, Polyart ?
Thanks.

Aloha! This figurine is by Holo-ka-hana and here is a related thread.....

I thought I’d post here, where the lava figurine collectors are: do any of you have information on (what I think) might be a company older than Cocojoes and HIP ~ Holo-Ka-Hana, Ltd.

the label

reads:

“Nanea (fascinating)

The latest creation by Holo-Ka-Hana, Ltd.

Nona Kapuailohia Beamer, recognized exponent of Hawaiian hula, named this fascinating figurine. Talented Georgi Daniel sculptured (Nanea) as well as Menehune Hauoli, Ki'i, Hoohehe'e, Koa, the Hawaiian warrior and Haunani, the beautiful Hawaiian miss.

All figurines are registered in the Territory of Hawaii, and are the exclusive property of Holo-Ka-Hana.

Lava from a recent volcanic eruption is used in a secret process giving these masterpieces of Hawaiiana a true distinction. Something to be treasured with your other fine pieces. These are not reproductions of great art - they are original authentic, and exclusive- made only by Holo-Ka-Hana, Ltd. Honolulu, Hawaii, We sincerely hope you will treasure (Nanea)”

I’ve googled to find out more about the company, but I’m having no luck. Nona Kapuailohia Beamer is the mother to Keola Beamer, the musician. Georgi Daniel passed away at the age of 82 in 1998.

oh and while i'm here: how do you clean & protect your cocojoes/HIPs? i thought the soap n water, soft damp towel would work, but they're still pretty grungy.

"part of my collection ....let me know if I'm sitting on anything rare!"

Do NOT sit on your Coco Joe figurines! Some of them could be quite painful and it's not good for the Coco Joes either!

Thanks for sharing your collection... yeah, you've got some nice ones there and a nice piece of burled wood too.

T

Hey Come on....get those pictures uploaded on here!!

Hanfooooooorrrrrrrrrrddddddddd! Make this guy go away!

Found this petroglyph ashtray on Friday and the matching lighter on Saturday about forty miles apart. Gotta love it.

That's not a lighter, that's a hand grenade! Send it to me, I will defuse it!
What a funny convergence. The ashtray is in Tiki Modern, of course.

T

Hey thanks Freddie! Great vintage photo! I love those aged ones!

I picked up this hapawood resin plate a few years back at the swapmeet:

I didn't buy it right away because it wasn't a Coco Joes and it didn't have a tiki on it. The sticker said the manufacturer was Pictures of Paradise. Since I didn'tfind anything else that day,I went back and got it.

I remember when I bought it the lady told me it was from the 60's. She got mad at me when I pointed out the 1986 copyright on it

At the time,I never noticed how much the 27-192 looked like a Cocojoes catalog number

So yesterday, I was looking at this Cocojoes catalog and came across the page of Hapawood plates.

The plate I had was fresh in my mind because I had just moved it on my shelf of stuff.

Then I notice this logo on the catalog page:

Same as tag:

So I guess it's technically another fine Coco Joe's product.

And the answer was right there in front of me the whole time. I just couldn't connect the dots...

And while I'm on the subject of NonCocoJoes Cocojoes, here's another one I have from a company called Coralei:

That company made the Coco Joe line before they went belly up... :( They even had a line of American Indian figures...

I've got nothing but time to try...

A volunteer from the doubles pile:

Flat backed older piece

Now the drill:

Drilled it in about half way through the piece:

Next step involved a brad and a hammer. Here is the hanger installed:

Then I just slid the hole over the nail and the tiki was stuck fast:

Answer: Yes you can!

"Then I just slid the hole over the nail and the tiki was stuck fast"
That's what she said!

lol...yes, yes you can.

I got some new display cases for my collection a few weeks back.Since I had to move, clean, and rearrange it all,I figured I'd take photos of the whole lot while I was at it. I have just over 600 pieces now. Just a few more and I'll have them all!

I want to place my order for the as yet unwritten collectors book of Coco Joes goodies. Now someone has to write it.

AND... It's probably in the 16 pages I just went through, back in the straighten out your tiki part, but... What's the story on the bent tikis? Is the "fire at the factory " story true?

Cool, now please take photos of the backs of them, the right sides of them, the left sides of them, the tops of them, and of course the bottoms of them. Also, please take photos of them individually.

Wow, that was amazing. Mahalo.
