I like how ya dropped the mixing rail into the bar top
!!!NICE!!!

Very cool, you are a man of many talents!!! I know this thing is going to look amazing when it is finished.

Very cool, MM! I like how you rounded it like many of the vintage rattan bars I've seen. I can't wait to see what kind artistic detail you'll put into this!

Is this for your home tiki bar?

Lookin' forward to updates!

Good start MonkeyDude. Has that high level of craftsmanship you put in all your stuff.

It already looks great.

I'm looking forward to watching the progress.

Looking forward to spilling my derinc on it. Nothing like a bar that smells like rum.

Here are the results for the day. Not as much progress as I wanted but still I made a dent.

Applying the Lauhala matting to the front and sides.

Attaching the split bamboo on the front

Here is the bamboo veneer applied at the base.

Here is the crazy clamping required to bend the rattan around the bar top. This will have two layers of rattan when finished.

I like it D. wiggle board in the house. I picked up a wallpaper steamer to rig up some steamy bending.

oh and as always clean work!

Looking good!!!
"I picked up a wallpaper steamer to rig up some steamy bending"
I put mine in the hot tub over night.
Next day it bends very well.

You don't know how good you have it.
To get that rattan here would be at least twice as much with shipping.

JT

Looking Good.

M

another productive day... finish work seems to go much slower than building big boxes. But its a lot less messy too...

custom shaped Rattan pieces stained and fastened to the kickboard.

Some more detail of the curved rattan pieces at the base.

Rope wrapped legs for additional detail

more work still tonight....

oooohhh...I like how it's coming together.

Hot tub is a neat idea, skip!

this is gonna be good!!!!

some more progress tonight..

got all the veneer bonded to the top and bartenders rail.

oh the joys of working with contact cement.. on wrong contact point... and you are SCREWED !!!!

Thankfully I got it right.

more progress tomorrow....
danish oil and some rattan work.

RH

Damn nice! I love the recessed area in front of the mixologist. The details and materials are beyond excellent, as is the design. Love those feet.

Da-amn.

M

a few more progress pics

rubbed some danish oil into the bamboo veneer last night to give it a deeper more rich color

then tonight I did a careful pour of bar top resin for the counter and bartenders rail... just need some dry time

Next is the rattan work around the counter top..

S

Looks great! I would like to suggest replacing your outlet with a GFCI verses what you have. The current outlet will not protect you if the grog spills in a gravity storm.

M

Fantastic work. Thanks so much for sharing your progress. I'm looking forward to seeing this finished and placed in its natural habitat!

not bad....
and here i thought you were just a clownish oaf!

You're a clownish oaf who can make one sweet bar!
Lookin great so far,MM!!

T

Great job Monkeyman, I saw the bar this morning and it has the same attention to detail that Derek puts in all of his creations.

I especially was impressed with the masks, don't ask to see it's an inside joke.

Bosko

That danish oil really made the bamboo veneer POP!

Lookin' good MM!

Hey all

I finished the install on this a few weeks back. Didnt get around to taking photos until recently. Here is the completed work.

Close up of the completed bar with the rattan perimeter in place.

The mug shelf built from left over parts used in the bar. This shelf has the same bamboo veneer around the exterior as is used on the bar top.

This image includes a shot of the recovered vintage barstools that were purchased off craigslist.

A wide shot including the refinished walls. Bamboo board on the lower half with black bamboo to separate the wall.

Night time shot complete with lighting.

I love it! :D

LT

Way to go MonkeyDude. Gorgeous.

Bravo Derek!

clown...

M

Derek that is one sweet bar... when's Happy Hour?

Big projects are lots of fun. Lots of depth and planning to the process.

Very kind comments. Thanks for looking.

The craftsmanship is amazing! I'd almost be afraid to set my drink on that!

We want to thank you again Derek for our NEW bar. You did an AWESOME job!!!
It was a learning process that's for sure and some super hard work. All worth it.

The bar is located in the kitchen in the perfect area - few steps and you are right outside the backyard for more entertaining.
The speakers are hidden very well on top of the shelf where all the tikis are. It's great to be sitting at the bar listening to music and do a little painting and just escape for a little while as you are having a drink.

Here are some pictures of the process before it got to where it is now.

things already taken down and getting it ready

5 layers of wall paper - the steamer worked wonders - its the only way to go.

then the primer went on and a little patch work here and there

and BAM the color of green on the walls

What a transformation is all I can say. We LOVE IT!!!!!

outstanding!! that bar top is awesome......diggin those large tiki masks with the lights behind it too!

Congrats on this bar! What a transformation of that space! May it bring you relaxation and good times and good company.

H

Many congrats on a job well done! I'm curious how big the bar is. I would like to try my hand at building one in my backyard tropical paradise myself but I don't know how long, wide, deep or tall a bar like that should be. Can you supply some of the finer details?
