The Hula Girls at Forbidden Island 2/19/11!!

Pages: 1 2 81 replies

Your favorite hulabilly band is coming up to Alameda to play at the legendary Forbidden Island!! I'm personally excited about this because I've heard such amazing things about FI.

We're in the process of working up a bunch of new songs for the show too, including two new ones that I've written; "Mai Kai Mystery Girl" and "The Suffering Bastard". Actually, Lucas Vigor co-wrote "The Suffering Bastard" with me too. We'll be playing three sets of about 40 mins each.

Also, coming with us are Miss Judy Luck and our cover model Miss Dinah DeRosa!

Dinah is also Miss December in the Forbidden Island calendar!

Hope to see you all Saturday, February 19th 5:00pm - 8:00pm
Who is joining us?

seems like the perfect time for Cap't Kneepads to chime in.

Jeff(btd)

Gotta see if I can make it to this event. It's my mom's bday so I'll already be in town. Got to check when the festivities are being held.

Gonna nab a few of the Sac Ohana and we will be there for your show...Yee Haw!!!

Great! Can't wait to meet you all!

J

Atomic Tiki Punk told me he (and Jungle Ginger) will be there making their Forbidden Island debut.

I'll be there as well, watching ATP's back (just in case :D). So CA represent !!

This should be great intimate show.

John O,if you need some back up,
I could be hired for security.

I agree! Please come on up!

RD

I notice that this will be on a holiday weekend for some of us. This is giving me an incentive to make the roadtrip from So Cal. Seeing the Hula Girls and having a romantic weekend in the Bay area will make a nice Valentine's day surprise for my wife.

Spike are you making an awesome poster to commemorate this performance?

Yeah! Bring Sabu and the Doc!! They're couple of my favorite buddies in tiki land!
And yes, Rum Dog, I am planning on screen printing posters for this show...I just need inspiration to get the art going... Thoughts, anyone?

RD

I know you like to have characteristics and personalty of the establishment represented in your art work. Hopefully some of the Forbidden Island regulars on TC will put in their thoughts of what would best reflect this iconic Tiki Lounge.

Looking at the photos of the FI web site, their Facebook page, and TC archives I notice they have a "signature tiki" that you usually like represented on your posters. My suggestion is to have the tiki sitting in the big whicker Dr. Fu Manchu type chair that I saw in several pictures under some cool tiki lamps.

Hopefully this will start the ball rolling on some others (who have actually been to Forbidden Island) to give some better input.

Here are a couple of links to the pictures I found for Forbidden Island for my suggestion.

Just want to make sure, all of your sets will be in the afternoon only between 2-5 pm. That info was kind of hidding in the first post.

We at Forbidden Island are really looking forward to hosting the Hula Girls in their debut NorCal mini-tour.
Please note, that due to a scheduling conflict, the show has been moved up. It's now 5pm to 8pm. See you all there!

Bummer. With time change, I can't make it. Hugs to everyone!

All drawn up and designed! The first five people to the show on Feb 19th will receive a limited edition, hand pulled, screen printed event poster for FREE! Aloha!

I'm gonna start printing them in the garage next week!

Man, Beach Bum Scott, I think you should just move back to California.

Are any out-of-towners going to Smuggler's Cove afterward or is the plan to close down FI ??

Decisions, decisions (but a good Tiki problem to have). :)

UPDATE - Actually now that I think about it, since Molokai Mike is hosting such a great show, I will be spending all of my weekend Tiki dollars at FI.

EXACTLY as it should be!

M

GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! I sooooooooo wish I could go!!!! AUGH! We will be in Sweden!! We leave on the 16th - you GOT to be kidding me! Sad face! Sad face!

Ah!! Korena! You need to cancel your Sweden trip!! Right?

It's GREAT that you're coming out from Denver, Scott! And as always, I'm stoked to have you hanging out, John-O!

I feel like if you're at the bar by 5:00, you should be good to get a poster... But don't quote me on that though. Regardless, I'm gonna print a bunch and they're really very inexpensive, for hand printed art.

Reminder; it's just about two weeks away! Make your lodging and travel plans now!

Can I hitch a ride with the band, and sleep in the Van?
I'll guard the equipment so it doesn't get stolen at night.

Jeff(btd)

For out of towners wanting some accommodation advice:
I'd recommend the Hawthorne Suites, cnr Webster and Lincoln Ave - really close to FI. Hotel of choice for Tiki Crawl.
http://www.oaklandhs.com/ (510) 522-1000

A nicer hotel experience, if you want to make a weekend of it, and a little more spendy (I think) would be:
Coral Reef Inn & Suites
http://www.coralreefinn.com - (510) 545-4139

Marina Village Inn
http://www.marinavillageinn.com - (510) 523-9450

Way looking forward to it! See you all there!

I can't make the 19th, but I can come down on the 18th for a Friday night show. Are they still doing a gig at Bamboo Hut on Friday night?

Yes! We will be at The Bamboo Hut in SF on the 18th! Probably start playing around 9:00. Hope to see you there!

Flying back early from biz in San Diego to make this one.

People on Facebook have been asking me about tickets to the FI show. The show is totally first come-first serve, to get in.
I know that Forbidden Island is a pretty small joint, so get there early if you want to guarantee that you'll get in. I'd be bummed if some of you, who are coming from long distances, can't end up getting in!

One week till the show!

Booked!

This time, next week, we'll be playing at the world famous Forbidden Island!
I spent all day today, in the garage, printing up the posters. I think they came out great!

I mixed that skin tone out of red, white, and gold speedball ink... If you look closely (in person) there's some metallic shimmer to the wahine, due to the gold ink! Bonus!

Remember that the first 5 people in the door, at show time, will receive a free poster!
Doors are at 5:00, music starts at 5:30

See ya next week, northern California!

Looking good Louis!
