And now in live, moving VIDEO!

Oh man, a few minutes too late! That one is way better than mine, but here it is anyways:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBonxrckl38

I haven't laughed so hard in a long, long time!

What even funnier then the dancing is the look on Spike's face the whole time he was playing that song! Priceless!

It took restraint. Lots and lots of restraint.
The funniest thing was that Christian told me Doug leaned over after a song and was like, 'I think that's a GUY'...

Hahaha....

Too fuckin funny!
I'm so glad that I went on Sunday.
Less people, and The dancer. Wow!!!
Like Jason said, I haven't laughed that hard
In awhile. I was crying at one point, and could
Barely catch my breath.
Goodtimes indeed.

I heard her name was "Don...ahhhhh !

But is Donna Tiki?

Um, I'd guess "no." But I bet Donna has a "tiki."

who took one for the team and took her home?

I would not wish that one on "Doctor Z" who has saved the Don's regulars a time or two.

But Spike, think of all the people who come out to see a band called The Hula Girls and then realize...

"Hey, it's ALL guys !!" :D

That takes "balls" (pardon my pun) to dance like that in front of a crowd (and not give a f**k what people think). This wasn't a street fair in West Hollywood, it was a county fair in ORANGE COUNTY !!

If self-confidence could be bottled and sold, then I'd say Don(na) had a marketable product.

More power to Donna! but only if He/She takes some dance lessons though. :)

Hey Spike,

Didn't we see Donna at the Denny's on PCH & 7th in Long Beach in the wee hours after a Saturday night at Don's? I could have sworn that was her standing over the toilet in the ladies room and giving me attitude.

Sorry we missed this one.

Curse of the Tranny!

Too funny.

CJ

I hope you assholes realize my dad is a tranny and all this trash talking hurts

Where is the best place for a tranny to plank?

DZ

This is Spike "working on his tranny".

(And all this time I thought he was talking about a car!)

J

"Transgender individual" is a better description. Anything that ends in an "ie" sound is considered to be diminutive.

And in some Oceanic cultures, the idea of a Third gender is widely accepted. In Samoa they call it Fa'afafine.

Cross-dressing... Tiki or not Tiki ??

J

Actually to get this back on The Hula Girls track, Spike I have an idea...

I think you should have Dinah and Judy "miked up" so they can sing the chorus on "Surfin' with Von Franco". Like on the album, I think the song carries much better that way.

IS Donna your Dad, Coco Joe? I am sorry! we mean no harm, it's OK, you just keep Planking
we understand now..............But he is still a funny dancer.......with questionable taste in attire.....
Otherwise...........well you know.......

I totally thought that "The Hula Girls"(guys named after chicks) title took on a new meaning with this thing happening. Donna was very nice and brought us a big crowd. Donna danced through four songs and really saved the night for us. It was dead before Donna got there.

There is no denying that that person is looking for attention though. No matter who you are, if you go out wearing a mini skirt and a undersized bikini top that you keep falling out of, you're up for some kind of discussion. That's all there is to it.

If Dinah was wearing that to the fair and dancing all crazy (see the video), there would be some kind of a reaction to that too!

Cross-dressing... Tiki or not Tiki ??

Since a Tiki Bar can cater to a Gay or Cross Dressing crowd, sure why not
That would bring an interesting dynamic to a Tiki Bar, but it sure was not tolerated in the 40s & 50s
so much.

Tolerance is a better thing to have these days, as much as I like the vintage ways of Tiki overall.
Does anyone know of a Gay Tiki Bar?
Donna?

J

Chuck, cross-dressing is not necessarily a gay thing. Many cross-dressers are straight, they just get a sexual thrill by dressing like women. The most famous cross-dresser in history was probably J. Edgar Hoover. I'm not sure what category Don(na) falls into though.

Since we just jumped to a new page, it's probably best to continue that type of discussion on a separate thread. This is Spike's general band thread that he repurposes for all of The Hula Girls' news and events. (Although he did get this whole crazy discussion started in the first place, ha ha).

Here's their next show BTW...

Go! Mr O!
"And in some Oceanic cultures, the idea of a Third gender is widely accepted. In Samoa they call it Fa'afafine. "

There is a great scene in "little big-man" with Dustin Hoffman that points out the Native Americans had a place for this natural part of society.... being told by their spirit guide, any man could play the roll of a women in the village... I say it's Tiki! but that's another post.....

.... i like that Spike's mad guitar playing almost caused some 'nip-slip'!

Happy Anniversary Hula Girls!!!

Thank Ben! Last night was THREE YEARS OF THE HULA GIRLS.
I had a beer blow up on me, on stage, before the show even started and my guitar died in the second to last song (turns out that it was actually a bad cord), but did we have fun! Thanks to all of our tiki buddies who came out last night. I know that there were a lot of options for the day yesterday and we're stoked that you chose to spend it with us!

In celebration of our three year anniversary, we decided to make available, four songs from a 'magic' rehearsal with Gary Brandin and Christian Kessler. We just happened to record the practice and while it isn't perfect, if you like a live sounding Hula Girls, you're in for a treat. AND THEY'RE FREE!
