ALOHA TIKI TRIBE!
Here's another shot of the tiki-art they have at the "Markona Kiosk" on the board walk, just behind the Wyland Gallery, and in front of the Coffee Shop. Nice area to sit and watch the ocean.
They have my art as giclees on heavy paper 16" x 20" and the art cards, and magnets, and Calendars and all that kinda Tiki-Swag. If you are walking through old town Kona, it's a nice little place to browse.
If you go around the corner to the part facing Ali'i Drive , the front of the Wyland Gallery, this is the stuff they have up in the window area. The Gallery carries some originals, high end giclees on canvas, (same size as the original paintings), and the skate decks and more paper prints. I'm still getting a big thrill about being in such a usually main stream gallery. Kind of a introduction to a lot of folks coming off the tourist cruise ships to seeing "Tiki-Art" for the first time.
So, if you are on that Hawaii Cruise ship, or some how find yourself in Kailua Kona on the Big Island, stop by and take a look!

jimsflies, Thanks , This was, I think the first painting where I really got that color of all red and orange with a cool hued foreground really as good as I could make it... well I guess an artist is never happy with something being "as good as it'll get" . I always try to make the next painting some how better. Don't know if I always do, but I certainly try. .

Printed on heavy Paper, with archival inks that resist fading even in a bright room. Museum quality - I've been told by a curator of a high end art gallery in LA that these are the highest quality giclee (art prints) he has even seen. The printer I use creates Giclees for Museums, and does all Herb Kane's work. (Kane is/was a famous Hawaiian Artist. He lived here on the big island as well, so used the best printer who was local. I was very happy when I found this guy. Been extremely happy with all his work.)
This piece became extremely popular a few years back here. Became the cover of the 2012 calendar, is now reproduced as art cards, birthday cards, post cards, etc, refrigerator magnets,and is basically the image most people know me by.
I have a strange feeling that this image will be selling in Hawaiian gift shops long after I am gone - along side the classic hula girl prints from the 30's.

Kai Koa ~ Thanks! That really makes me feel good, hearing things like that lets me know this "Tiki-Art" path is headed to the right place. That is really one of my big goals in making my "Tiki-Art": making my little mark on Tiki Culture, and Pop-Culture, and Hawaiiana. Sure, being paid to make art is another big part. And, being paid to make TIKI ART is a real dream come true. Then, touching people's Tiki collections is a huge rush. I picked up the custom sized canvas that will be the center piece of my 2014 summer art show at La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles
Colette's Custom Framing has saved my butt so many times on rush jobs .... she is awesome! A great frame place that is run with Lots of ALOHA!
I also grabbed some gallery wrapped giclees
I'm excited about this canvas - my agent already is in discussions with an art patron on it's purchase... it'd be interesting to know what actually is going to go ON IT! (hey, I've said my art agent/partner Abbas, has really been a big help in getting my "gallery" art career going -, but wow - he's really becoming awesome at this sort of thing. He started from a place where he said "I know nothing about art, I don't want to be an art agent." Now, he seems to know more about the art business than some curators and gallery owners. He's the guy behind putting together the big Body Glove tiki-mug release party for Body Glove/the Wyland Kona Ocean Front gallery this October. After listening to him, I understand so much more about how the whole art world and business world , and how they work hand in hand. A gallery is a store it's not a museum. I know, of course, it would be nice to have the two worlds be separate,- you know - art for art's sake, -well... in a perfect world... but in the real world, they are very very tied together.
I am actually starting to think that the business deals I see Abbas make are really PART of the whole Art experience I am putting out into the pop culture. I mean, if you are going to purchase an original "Low-Brow" art painting, shouldn't you get to make the "deal" with a tall, swanky dressed guy in dark glasses, oozing personality, driving an exotic sports car, with some kinda of gold tiki hanging around his neck?)

That is AWESOME! When I worked with Earl Washington on making those Hand carved Woodblock prints, we split the run. I got all the odd numbers and he got all the even numbers. Then fate took Earl off before we could finish our planned series of 13"Tiki Noir" prints. Only 3 of the series were made. I've run out of mine... and these are going for insanely cheap price! You have to see them in person to really see Earl's amazing work. He is the last great hand carved wood block printer... and health reasons have stopped him from making any more. Get these while you can.

Those are great prints.
I have a few different tropical prints like the one below that he signed "E.M. Washington 1939." Can you tell us anything about Washington or those works? For example, these were marketed as his grandfather's work, but I'm pretty sure they're not actually that old.

Well, all I will say is Earl is one colorful character. He was also one of the most dedicated artists I ever met. I was amazed at the great lengths he would go to just to acquire the perfect, aged paper from the right kind of mill, for his beloved prints, he would make one at a time, on his giant iron monstrosity of an antique press that looked like it belonged in a museum instead of a work shop. He is the last great hand carved wood block printer. It was inspirational to hear him talk about his work. However, often with artists so lost in their work, they don't quite work well in our modern rat-race world. He was truly of a different age, he followed his own rules - all to just make his art. …and fate never seemed kind to him. He would do anything to just keep making his beautiful prints, and didn't make choices the average joe would. Wow, he was anything but average. He's an artist in that deep, lost in his own world of creation, kind of way. A REAL DEAL artist, that is so rare. I was very excited to work with such a master of his craft. I think it made him all that much more interesting, and his prints that much more collectible. I think his unique, and maybe infamous, choices to survive with enough $ to just make art, raised his prints to an even higher level of "Art". If you have any of his prints, you know how beautiful they are. Sadly, health reasons have stopped him from hand carving his beloved prints. The world is cruel, we should had rewarded this artist with what ever he needed to work, but the world doesn't do that. Now it has deprived our culture of a true artist. If you can find any of his work - BUY IT!

Aloha Tiki Tribe! Just got in a new batch of beautiful gallery wrapped giclee on canvas art prints - same size as the originals - really came out nice. I'm just so grateful that my printer is not moving off island...I was scared he was for the whole last year, he was actually in the process of moving! ...when finally the tiki gods or fate or what ever stepped in and now he's staying on the Big Island, and saved my butt! His work is some of the best around, and not just in Hawaii - Curators of galleries in LA have told me his giclees are the best they have ever seen. Hale Tiki - Thanks! Most of my giclees are same size as the paintings, which are 24" x 30". The Mugs are great, and I'm really happy with all the work Tiki Farm did on them. I am very happy with this towel, and I'm jazzed with this whole project... the actual fact that I was able to have such cool "low-brow Tiki-Art" in the mainstream rep-ing a major Surf Brand has really made my inner Art Muse very happy. It's gettin' TIKI out there in the world where maybe it wasn't seen before. And, after a few go arounds with a few different factories I think we finally found one that can get a full color painting screened down to work as a Beach Towel design... This was tougher than I thought. We are now, after seeing this prototype, making the towel a little thicker, (one notch up from the average tourist souvenir towel, getting a Woven label instead of a printed one, all to keep in step with Body Glove's higher standards as a hard core surf brand. When you look at both the towel and the original painting, I think they got darned close, even bumped up the green on the creature a bit to brighter - suitable for eye grabbing in the tourist shop. Ah, what will the tourists think when they see this monster? I know it's a limited edition and will go fast, barely making the shelfs anywhere really, but, what a hoot if will be for the lucky few vacationers who stumble upon it!
