Not sure if this is the right forum...I came across these photos here on TC from Trader Sams. Having recently strung a similar string of lights in my backyard lounge area, I would like to try to make or purchase similar shades for my lights. I'm hoping one of my fellow TC'ers can point me in the right direction (either where to purchase or better yet, point me in a direction to recreate something similar). I need 18 of them. |

Yeah a tube would be easier to do I think. I found this link and this site that sells the rings: I wonder if I could make it with any fabric and then coat with some sort of clear coat to protect from uv/weather? This fabric might tie in nicely with the red chairs I have in the lounge: |

Yeah at $35 a shade, it won't work for my project (need 18 of them). Here is some acrylic tube: |

Yeah, a little pricy. I wonder if acrylic tubes would work. We have Tap Plastics out here in SF. All sorts of plastic shapes, I bet fiberglass tubes could be made fairly inexpensively. [ Edited by: Tipsy Yeti 2013-09-17 21:47 ] |

if someone finds themselves next to the lights at Trader Sams, I would like to get a couple other angles of the shade to see how they have attached it and further figure out how they made them. A few macro shots showing inside the underside of the shade would help. BTW- @Tikiskip that lamp and shade are very cool! [ Edited by: jimsflies 2013-09-18 05:11 ] |

Can you share how you made it? Did you wrap the burlap (?) around something? |

Great idea on the pumpkins! I've been considering having a Halloween party, but given we just had a party a couple weeks ago I may be partied out till next summer. |

I was at Oceanic Arts Saturday. Knowing they supplied a lot of the materials for Trader Sam's/Tangaroa Terrace, I asked about these outdoor string lights. Not sure of the guys name I spoke to, it was not Bob or Leroy, but I recognize him, he's been there as long as I have been going there. He said they did supply a lot of fixture to Disney for this project, but not the string light (rules out that source). He felt they probably made them in-house, possibly using Abaca Cloth to wrap the plastic cylinder. |

Hey Skip, Did you put that lampshade outside at all yet? If so how's it holding up? I believe I have found a source for some plastic tubes that will work for this project...time to figure out the other details. |

Here is the plastic material I was thinking might work: But after more thought, I bet it would get very brittle in the sun. :( But maybe if the plastic is covered with fabric, it may last longer. The price is certainly acceptable for 18 of them...but after spending time making them, it would be nice to get at least a few years out of them. I thought you made yours with the acrylic tube you posted? |
