Tiki Central Administration Changes

Pages: 1 30 replies

Aloha everyone,

I'm Hanford Lemoore, the absentee owner of this here tiki site! It started with Jennifer Thompson and I, way back in 2000, as a Yahoo forum. That's 19 years ago! Wow!

I wanted to drop in and make a few announcements:

Aloha and Mahalo to Hakalugi

Longtime Tiki Central Member Hakalugi has stepped down from being our administrator! He did a fantastic job for seven years, and I want to personally thank him here for all his work. He took on the task when I was no longer able to, and I really appreciated it. In honor of his service I've given him the title of Special Tiki Central Agent! We don't have too many of those!

MadDogMike Picks Up The Tiki Torch

Today, I made MadDogMike our new administrator - he's been a member for 11 years and continues to contribute regularly and I'm happy to have him step up to the plate and help out, and I'm sure he'll handle the new role with grace and responsibility.

A Quick Primer On An Administrator's Role

Here's a list of things Admins can do:

  • Ability to ban and delete users
  • Authority to settle user disputes
  • Ability to modify user names
  • Ability to see user's emails (but NOT edit them, more on that later)
  • Ability to create and modify forums
  • Access to Cool and Current votes and U-Mods (previously I was the only one who could see those)
  • Access to emails that come from the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page
  • Access to TikiShout Abuse reports
  • Access to all forums
  • Add and remove Moderators for forums
  • All Moderator powers (Edit posts, move topics)

Here's a list of what Admins CANNOT do:

  • Admins CANNOT log in as you or as other users
  • Admins CANNOT read other's PMs
  • Admins do NOT have access to the raw database
  • Admins CANNOT view or change user's passwords
  • Admins CANNOT change user email addresses (see below)

Regarding email addresses: I removed the power for Admins other than me to edit email addresses. This was done so that the onus of account security falls solely on me.

Misc. Site Changes

I took this time to do the tiniest of maintenance to the site:

  • Removed the Facebook Like button
  • Removed TC Banner Advertising Links
  • Removed the long-gone option to buy the Tiki Central Shag Prints
  • Updated the Contact and Report Abuse pages

I might make a few other changes as well, but my skills are rusty and about all I can do is remove stuff.

Okole Maluna and Mahalo to both MadDogMike and Hakalugi!

-Hanford

Hanford, thank you for creating this great site and keeping it running all these years. Thank you Hakalugi for your work over the past 7 years

It will take me a bit to get everything figured out but we will get it. If you have any issues that I can help with, drop me a PM, I am in here daily. There have been issues with new members signing up. If you know of anyone who wanted to sign up and couldn't please let me know. I won't be making any big changes to the site, my goal is to keep the existing gears well oiled.

Thanks
"Maddog" Mike

Hanford!!!! Great to see you reappear. I echo Mike's thanks for creating what remains after nearly 20 years the best place on the internet for Tiki and Poly Pop lovers.

Thanks to Haka for your hard work over the years, and as I understand it, especially for cleaning up a tsunami of spam and keeping it tidy afterward.

I, for one, welcome our new Mad Dog overlord. Tiki Central remains in good--albeit different--hands.

All right MDM.
Good job.

I echo the thanks to Hakalugi for stepping up and for years of hard work, and to Hanford for creating and overseeing this wonderful site for all these years. I'm still a bit of a nube here, at least compared to many of the old hands, but it's obvious the amount of effort put forward by both of you in maintaining this incredible site.
MDM - I know you'll continue the standard of excellence in this wonderful home on the net (because, well, TIKI!).
Mahalo to you all!

K

Hey Hanford and crew - thanks for keeping the site alive! I constantly point people here as the definitive source (Facebook can screw). I hope in the future we can consider a modern, responsive forum...but that's for another thread. Mahalo!

EDIT: Might wanna remove the AIM button in signatures as well since the platform no longer exists. :D

I removed AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo messenger buttons as well.

THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!

There has been a LOT of people over on Facebook who have said they've had issues with registering and have given up. Last night in fact it was mentioned twice in two different groups and i commented that a new admin had been appointed (congratulations Mike) and that hopefully that issue should be addressed soon, so if that is one of the first things off the ranks that is being looked at you should see an influx of new people wanting to join in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you Hanford & Hakalugi, and all others who've helped create & keep this forum going.

And Hooray for MadDogMike!!

T

Yes thanks to Hanford & Hakalugi, Humu and even Kate plus the many others who over the years kept things going.

Massive changes are not coming would guess so don't get all excited, if you have lots of free time maybe Hanford & Mike could hear yer ideas but that is up to them.

Fixing the sign up issue would be a good one.

I don't like change, Change gave us Walgreen's instead of Kahiki, And bright Day Glo painted tiki.

Good luck and congrats Mike!!

H

Thank you Hanford and Hakalugi for all your work and Mike we know we are in good hands with you in charge.

Yeah, there are registration issues. I'm trying to fix them now.

I'll make a post if/when I fix them.

Dear Hanford, thank you and your group for starting these pages that changed my life forever. Tiki Central has been such a great resource and posting here has hooked me up with many friends I will have forever. It also allowed me to become a tiki artist, I found an art niche that has brought my husband and I such joy in creating and collecting.

Hakaguli has always been there when needed and MadDogMike, an excellent choice as replacement will be there too. I thank them both.

Here's to another 19 years. I'll do my best to survive that long.

Cheers, Wendy aka danlovestikis and Dan aka wendylovestikis

Looks like you've gotten something fixed, Hanford; a few new members have appeared on the list. Welcome, everybody!

I'm amazed TC hasn't gone off the rails. Someone is keeping an eye on it. Bots would have filled every topic with porn decades ago if not for an admin or Hanford or something. We were just disusing it last night. Perhaps when I retire I'll implement some of what we talked about... Hopefully TC will still exist then...

Thanks for doing the work!

T

"Bots would have filled every topic with porn"

Wait, that may bring people back to TC.

Poly porn?

Yes Hamo, a couple of new members, first ones since June :)

U

Three Cheers for MadDogMike!

I have been trying to register for a really long time and he finally got me in.

WooHoo! Thank you sir!

 :D

What can't MDM do?????

Way to step up Mike!

LOL, thanks Lori

Kampai to Hakalugi and congratulations MDM!

Thank you Hanford!

Congratulations Mike!

Hanford,
My deepest gratitude to you for this amazing creation!!! Thank you Hanford !!! Quite seriously, and genuinely, I have found endless hours of enjoyment learning and reading some of the wealth of information on this site.....and I have barely scratched the surface.

It is a treasure in all meanings of the word.

MDM,
Congratulations !! Thank you for taking up the post and for all you contributions to this point. Cheers to you !!

Hanford, Haka, et al, thank you for creating TC and maintaining it. It was where I first came years ago to start learning about Tiki and it’s truly an unparalleled resource of material and knowledge. Yes, there are things that could be changed but the historic Calais and the value of its members’ “institutional” knowledge will always be here. And hopefully, so will we.
Huge mahaloz for all your service and contributions. Congrats to MDM for carrying the torch forward.
Cheers!
