I have found a long time tiki collector who is considering selling several valuable tiki items in his collection(check two other post in collecting tiki that I did today.) One item that is for sure going to be sold is his mug collection, if the right price is met. I counted quickly and saw over 180 individual mugs today. Here are some pictures I took of them: [ Edited by: Bay Park Buzzy 2006-07-07 01:27 ] |

I can see some valuable collectible mugs, and also some very common ones. It's impossible to tell how many of each. Without better photos, and a description of the condition of the mugs, it would be very difficult to come up with a price. Perhaps someone who is more knowledgable about mug collecting should be allowed to appraise it. |

I don't think this is of interest to collectors, because for one there are few vintage mugs in there, and most of all, what's left of the fun of collecting if you buy in bulk? |

I pretty much agree, but he doesn't want to spend the next eight months running back and forth to the post office sending out $6-8 mugs, parting the collection out. Knowing his reserve, I'm looking into taking it myself, and then spend the next eight months running back and forth to the post office sending out $6-8 mugs. I know how mug collectors love the thrill of the hunt.... When I put this on Ebay I will describe it as this: I was hoping some mug collector anal retentive guy had some sort of mathematical formula that would calculate the average resale value of a tiki collection on a per piece average, based upon extensive Tiki Central data collection and research. |

yep. Stores done with it, wants to get rid of it in one quick turnover. we want to make an original tiki artist section in its place with consignment items from people I have met that need a retail place to show their stuff. I was the first local guy to get my stuff in there, and at my urging we are going to get more quality artist's work to sell. Kirby will probably be the second person. But we needed more space. Owner said I could take a cut if i moved the whole lot for him on ebay. He doesn't like computers and is too busy. I offered it here first to see if anyone "cool" from this site wanted it before some dealer snatched it up and parted it out for profit. This sale is not for the store though. The collection in the store is going to be taken out, sold or not. In the store it was for sale as a lot only too. Actual price that he will part with it is around the old posted store asking price(But that's privy to San Diego insiders ), but this also includes about 80? or so not in the store and not for sale display ones behind the counter, as well as other notables not in the store.(no pictures of any of those) SSSH!! Matt, Don't let anyone you know the old asking price. That would be insider trading. You and your friends might think you can make a quick profit if you pool your money together and buy it, because knowing what you know, you then know the potential profit realized in the purchase of this collection. Good thing I know who you hang with...I seriously think I'm going to buy this tomorrow morning anyway. Matt, you get first crack at any of them you want. Just give me a couple of days to figure out how much they are really worth. Anyway, they are priced low to move the whole set and we probably figured some dealer or collector would take the time to break it up and keep the ones he/she wanted. We're not. That's like working for slave wages when I think about it. [ Edited by: Bay Park Buzzy 2006-07-06 21:35 ] |

C'mon! I've heard everything but an actual dollar value from you guys who have seen it. Put your knowledge and reputation on the line and name a price. Please, please, please. What's wrong, afraid to be wrong? Moki, thanks. A valid, quantitive appraisal of the collection. All I want to know now is, should I waste my time parting it out to make more than I would for selling the whole thing in one transaction. I do not know a thing about tiki mugs at all. Frankly, I consider mug people to be the bottom feeders of the tiki universe. Like the nickel and dime welfare, foodstamps subspecies of a tiki scavenger, rather than a true collector. Hyenas, roaming lice infested second hand stores hoping to find a Tikibob for $5. Oh the joy!!!But they spend money in the capitalist scheme of things, so welcome cheapskates, I have a collection of old, used dishes for sale. Can I make a profit off you? Maybe. I'm trying to figure vthat out right now. Please tell me mug whiners("someone bought my mug at the last second on ebay and I really wanted it. Wah, wah, wah!). I want to know what you guys really think of this collection! Knowledge is power!! I know nothing of mugs. I've learned more than I care to know in the last six hours, regarding mugs. All mug collections look the same to me. They have stupid colors too. How much should I pay maximum, for this entire set to realize a retail profit of say, $100 total, if I buy it and part it out? So early indications of the quality of this collection seems to indicate that it sucks. Should I not try to sell it then? Can I not mak a profit off this transaction? Are profits not tiki or something? |

Buzzy, The majority of the mugs in that collection are not rare. And most are still available from the manufacturer. As for how much profit you can make by parting it out... I don't know. And since I was not educated in California, I can do math. You'll just have to watch E-Bay. Search the completed auctions for true values. There is no specific formula. Good luck with your purchase. |

Modmana: No bubble bursted. just wanted to offer it up at a lower price if anyone wanted it before they were outbid by someone outside of the TC family, if they even want it at all. Everyone in san Diego may have passed on this, but I was trying to offer it up in case someone outside of san diego had not seen it yet. It comes out to $4.06 each per mug, for the whole set...I know what tiki farm wholesale cost is for mugs... This is fun for me. I've never talked about mugs before. this is like pissed off talk radio stuff. You guys are one fired up bunch of people. You guys ever come to blows over this stuff? Man, I'm into it!!! I have a new idea. Non San Diego people may not understand the complexities of it, I'm sorry, but here we go. I now know this:
This is why we wanted to move it now: I was trying to talk Cobain into moving this collection out so we could get more original tiki stuff in the store that would turn over quicker than this collection. Like you guys said, its been there for years and busloads of people have passed it up. Why not replace it with something fresh?, I thought. I have a new plan now. Step 1:I'm going to tell Cobain how bad his mug collection is tomorrow. Upon hearing this, he will realize that the whole thing is worthless. I'm going to convince him that it is so worthless, in fact, that it is actually a liability owning it. I will also tell him it is like the stock market, and the value of it is continuing to go down every day. Eventually, I will convince him to give it to me outright, to relieve him of the financial burden that it is, before he actually has to make payments on it. Step 2: Upon receiving the collection, i will receive instant tiki credibility for having such a wide and diverse collection of tiki mugs, including some very collectable ones. I love my tiki bobs! I will use the space in the store to show off my collection, like a museum. Instead of the for sale sign, I'm going to put a sign up that says "Buzzy's Mug Collection!" then I'm going to make up a fake story about how I spent the last several years watching the Ebay countdown and getting to the swap meet early to ensure that I found all these little tiki treasures. Then, Cobain and I will sit around the store and laugh about the time he tried to sell his collection...Too bad about that idea I had to get different stuff in the store. And I was trying to do nice... |

BUZZY Well, On ebay it is alot harder to sell "lots" of items....I have an extensive collection of star wars(original 77-83)toys that I had new as a kid that i tried to sell off in a lot, and nobody came close to the reserve which was half of the going market on seperate pieces. If anything, you'll probably have a better shot at selling the items off as seperate pieces or small groups like 3 tiki mugs for $15. As for the pissing matches here lately on TC, it sucks! Buzzy simply stated "PM me with how much max you would be willing to spend on a collection nearing 200 mugs, only if you are serious. This is a huge collection! If you meet his reserve, I will sell it to you for that. So PM me. Ebay next..." |
