Woah.. Fantastic Tiki Week and Beautiful tikis. Nice try with the carving platform, I see you were safe and comfortable on the scaffold while holding those Dangerous chisels, but when using the chainsaw, you were perched on a Slippery ladderon one foot and you had the other foot in the tiki's mouth hoping he would hold it fast.
Well at least you ended up with all your limbs. Excellent job on the tikis and I like everyone else are Drooling over the giant logs you seem to always find..

Greetings from Sweden and congratulations to all your beutiful work. It´s really inspiring to se someone carve logs (or should i say trees!) of that size. It´s also nice to see that you have something of a tiki "scene" in Deutschland, something we´re lacking here in Sweden.
Hope to see more of your high class work soon!

Wow...you are an amazing carver. The big guy is such a great design...I love him. As a nurse, I just have to say looking at those pictures of you with the chainsaw perched atop the ladders made me nervous....thank goodness you are safely back on ground. :D

Great pics of the hostel. You are obviously a carving hero on your spot of the planet!!! Nice work. :)

However I want to have the time for TC and all your interesting article.

About the giant tiki:

Paipo, thanks for the cool pix! It could realy be the same place, but you life in the pacific ocean. :)

Moondance, for the big tiki at Rügen I worked about 8 days. It was a arduous job and I was happy,
when I finished the tiki. The figure is about 13 feet high.

Benzart, thanks! :)

Now, I have many new pictures for you by showing my last 2 month.

In the first pictures you can see my resin pendant production. It was a long way, till all came off!
I colored the resin with different pigments.

I cast 6 different tiki figures for necklaces and keyholders.

The Marq and the Easter Island pendants!

More marquesan and hawaiian tikis!

And the last pendants!

And here are some customized pendants with different wood balls

Here you can see the Tekoteko necklace and the ring, I´ve worked out together with a Munich jeweler.
It was carved out from model wax and cast in 925 sterling silver. After it has been fire ooxidize. Limited edition of 20.

Juhu! My first mug is ready! Here you can see the first pictures off the "Mr. Tonga Tounge" mug.
It´s about 7 inch high, was carved out from plaster, cast in ceramic and produced by Cheeky Tiki / UK.

These little fellows are three custom made doorknob for a nice guy I met at the "Tiki Modern Tour".

Here are my latest carvings. Two tiki masks are out from out from cottonwood and colored with moorbrown wood stain.
The tikis are polished with antique wax and about 28 inch high.

A new marquesan friend! The Tiki is about 3,2 feet high and was carved from massive cottonwood.
After I colored it with moorbrown wood stain and acrylic, I polished the wood with antique wax, too.
with the acrylic I gave the wood a lots off highlights.

And here we are at the "Tiki Modern Tour"! The first pic shows the tour tiki I carved.
It´s out from oak wood with real bones on his head. Now the tiki stand at the Mata Hari bar at Zürich.
Sadly, till now I have only this picture of the tiki and the event.
Stupidly our camera got own feets at the last evening at St. Gallen.
And here is the tiki man at the Forbidden Paradise stall. Thanks for the great time!

Here are some pics from crazy guys. "Lil Roth" visted our stall at the Road Devils Rod & Kustom Art Show and did funny things.
And the second pic shows Gene Winfield while carving on a friends tiki! A real artist!

David Vicente and me talking tiki! It was very nice to met him.

David Vicente, Lil Roth, Michael and me withe the big oak tiki.

So I hope you enjoyed the my little presentation. If something happen in my garage, I´ll let you know.
Thanks a lot and greetings, Haikai

I really dig your website too. I gotta get my ass over to Europe, it looks like your guys are having a blast over there!!!

S

Yes Nice, That Frank kicks ass very nice.

T

Your stuff is amazing as usual.

Its always a pleasure to see your stuff. It has great expression and classic finishes. The color Marquesan is excellent. How did you get the petina? is that from paint or the wax?

Aloha,

Polynesiac, thanks for your nice words and visiting my website.
I hope the website is also interesting for you american guys.
To know a little bit what happen with tiki in Germany/Europe.
Cross the pond and and enter Europe; we need much more pirates like you!

seeksurf and Tahitiki, thanks for your compliments.

AlohaStation, thanks! :)
First, I colored the marquesan tiki with moorbrown wood stain.
Then I took a broad brush with a little bit orange acrylic and
colored softly over the wood surface.
So the color adhere only at the highest parts of the carving texture.
And for the finish I polished the wood with antique wax. So, all the color is fix.

I hope you understand, what I try to explain with my english skills.

Wish you all a nice weekend! Mahalo, Haikai

B

HaiKai, I can't Believe all the stuff I missed in just a couple weeks away. Excellent work as usual but getting even BETTER! The frankie boy is Very good too. I Really love that you are keeping busy and carving a Lot of pieces AND taking time to post them,,,BRAVO!

Hey Benzart, I´m happy that you visited my thread. Thanks! :)
This week I´ll start with two new carvings. A three feet Ku out of cherry wood
and a cottonwood mask. Perhaps in the beginning of Dezember I´ll carve a new giant
seven feet oak tiki. So furthermore I´ll be busy in carving.

I realy like your myspace picture gallery, it´s a own "Book of Tiki". Your carvings are so lovely!

Salut benella my neighbor, thanks for your nice words.
To create always new tikis or one figure in different styles, is the greatest job for me.
It´s always a new challenge , but that´s the fun and makes a great result.
You create step by step and learn more.

For me it would be boring to carve always the same tiki. It´s a work for a machine!
I`ll busy and let you know if I have new pixs! :)
Keep on carving, you make a good job!

Greetings, Haikai

H

Haikai, you are yet to bore us with your carvings. They are always great and interesting. You have your own unique style, and we all love to see the updates.

T

Great work! Luv the glaze on the mug - it's really cool. As is the acrylic highlights on the marq.

T

Hi man,
it is always a pleasure to see some new stuff of yours.
By next year you can stop doing all the advertising stuff and focus fully on the tiki-cult, I suppose.
Joking apart, you do a great job with all those new ideas to come up with. That is a real guide to me. Drop me a note for next years tiki-tour. I would appreciate to talk
tiki with you in person someday.
By the way, are there plans for the next walldorf weekender? Or anything else in my neighbourhood (NRW)?

Rock on, tok-tok

Haikai, you're crazy, man...the kind of pirate I'd have on my ship any day! Everytime I see your work I go out and buy a tall, frosty Paulaner and toast you..

H

hiltiki, I do my best to jolly you guys along. Thanks for your nice words! I´ll be back....

TheBigT, thanks also for your kind words. I attached importance that the mug have such a
marmorate glaze and not only one color. So, I think that some parts of the mug comes out
more interesting and it looks a little bit like an old mug.

tok-tok, "...stop doing all the advertising stuff and focus fully on the tiki-cult..."
That would be a fantastic life. But I think that more people on TC have this dream.
"Tiki carver that´s my regular job" sounds good. Perhaps sometimes... and than I´ll be very :D
At this time I´ll start planing the events and exhibitions for next years.
I´ll let you know if something happen. It would be great to talk tiki with you in person.

Basement Kahuna, I´m very proud that you visting my thread. I visiting your thread too and
so I go also every time out and buy a tall, frosty Paulaner and toast you..

Thanks guys and have a nice week, Kai

A

Hello Haikai,

i'm very happy to see some new pics of your work
Amazing !!!
the weeks are very long without new pics from my german brother :)
For us, (my french carving brothers :) you are our inspiration for doing
more and more tiki carves

For a german like me living in france it's very heavy without all the good germans beers :)
take a look at my TC topic hope to see you soon
Akuae
(wir kennen uns vom Hangar und Weil )

H

Aloha!

Thanks AKUAE, I visited your thread and was happy, when I saw how busy you are.
Nice Tikis, especially the Moai is realy well done.
Have fun and keep it on!

Here are some new pics for you!
I have carved two new tiki masks in the same style like the first one.
I carved it in summer 2008 and now I dilate it to a tiki trio.
They are all out of cotton wood, colored with wood stain and polished with antique wax.

Have a nice weekend, Kai

That´s the older mask!

no. 2

and no. 3

And all together!

B

Very beautiful Kai, as always.
Nice wekk-end too.

Ben

Kai, these are really nice masks. Great style as always. I can see them turning into many aftermarket items also. Imagine them framing some art in their mouths. Or as a sconce on a wall and a type of diffused light or lamp inside the mouth.

Or something like these simulated fires in the mouth...

http://www.nextag.co.uk/wall-hung-fire/zzukzB1z0--search-html

They look great stand-alone though too!

S

Those Masks ROCK! I would hang those puppys in the living room.
NICE!

Aloha!

Benella, thanks for visiting my thread so constant.
Hope you feel fine and you are busy in carving some new french gods. :)

Lake Surfer, thanks for you great suggestion. Yes, it realy lend itself to create something
for the cut-out at the mouth. I like your idea to use them as a wall lamp with a diffused light.
The masks already change their owner, but I will grab the idea sometimes for an other project.
It would be also funny as a frame for an aquarium or a display!

Seeksurf, thanks for your comment and the tip. The charm of the masks is that`s a trio
and they supporting themselves. The new owner of the masks hang them up on a wall of his bedroom.
The wall is decorate with a snake paperhanging.

Now, I think it´s time for a new "Tiki Microcosms" and some progress pictures.
When I read bigbrotiki´s tread about Tiki Microcosms a long time ago, I was very inspire and created the Voodoo Box.
Now, I´ll start a new project with an old wooden first aid box. It should become a box with some
niceties inside. Perhaps with a native shack, some tiki figures, a campfire, a sacrificial altar
and especially some light effects. I don´t want to lay down someting, yet.
I´ll try to create it in an old and authentic style.

Now, I have the first pictures for you. I´ll only be busy after my regular job on this project, because it´ll take a lots of time.
But we have long and cold winter evenings in Bavaria.

Currently, I grinded the old first aid box and lay down a PNG styled pattern on the door.
In the next step I´ll countersink the pattern. Hope you like the first pics!

Kai

B

beautiful pattern.
What kind of wood it that ?
Can't wait for the next pix.

Benjamin.

S

Mahalo for the read. Great stuff the box cover is going to be sweet.
Loved the read on Tiki Microcosms!

Tiki Porn

H

Aloha,

Benella, thanks for your response. I don´t realy know what kind of wood it is.
I think it could be beech (in french it´s hêtre).
Amitiés!

Seeksurf, thanks for the great picture. I laughed again, when I saw the funny guy with his umbrella in the background.
His eyes loks like fried egg. I remember his name is "Gumby". Great Microcosms!
I also enjoy the Tiki Microcosms thread and hope that more people will be inspirated to create one.

O.K. and here are the next pictures of my PNG box. First I continued with the door and milled
out the pattern. It was not realy easy to hold still and make clean lines. The heck with it,
It´s handcrafted! Now I´ll try out to mix some natural pigment colors for the pattern.
I read at Basement Kahuna´s thread that you can use buttermilk for mixing natural colors.

And than another step I have done. This will be the lamp of the tiki shack.
It´s out of a small glass bottle. I cut the bottle neck, fixed a LED at the hole and knot the net around the glass ball.
I have done it yesterday and need all the evening.

Mahalo and a great week, Kai

B

:o

Superb light !
And the door is very cool too.

Tschüss,

Benjamin.

H

Aloha,

Bennella thanks for your response!

Here is my next update of the PNG box. In the last two days I carved the first figures for the microcosm.
Two PNG tree trums out of balsa wood and grounded with different teak stain. They are still not finish, yet.
That is only the base coat.

That flat bowl will be the fire place with a LED inside and full of glowing firewood.
I turned it out of oak wood. Hope you enjoy the latest steps.
Cheers, Kai

B

Very good looking work my friend. Especially the little fellow on the second picture. I saw a boy like him but a bit bigger  last week at the Musee du quai Branly. Very good.

Benjamin.
