This reminds me of the delightful lyrics to the Burt Bacharach & Hal David song Wives And Lovers. The tune is nice (I think the version I'm familiar with is by ** Jack Jones**) but the sentiment is the sorta thing I don't miss about pre-1970something America: Wives and Lovers Hey! Little Girl For wives should always be lovers too Day after day For wives should always be lovers too Hey! Little girl A little one sided, but fortunately Tony Velona penned some advice for men in his song Lollipops And Roses (It was also recorded by Jack Jones, an instrumental version by Herb Alpert.): Lollipops And Roses Tell her you care, each time you speak, One day she’ll smile, next day she’ll cry, We try acting grown up, but as a rule, So, carry her books, that’s how it starts, |

I know that in the minds of most of the straight men I know, if their woman was "a little gay" that would definitely make her "a little more interesting" |

I think this is a Hoax. Why is there "Advertising Archive" listed as a credit for the image, which by the way, is the cover for the a 1957 edition of the British "John Bull" magazine? I could find absolutely no evidence a "Housekeeping Monthly" magazine ever existed. The qualities listed are outrageous even for the 1950's: "Don't complain if he is late home for dinner or even stays out all night." Give me a break! |

Atomic, as always, your allegiance to skepticism is admirable  http://www.snopes.com/language/document/goodwife.asp undetermined. Speaking as a single mom, I relate to the need to be left alone when you first get home from the office. sigh there are days wish I had a good wife to come home to. One that knew his place. |

Nobody was seriously thinking this particular bit was real, but it's not far off from what the establishment was trying to tell the mid-century woman (in a desperate hope to stave off what eventually because the woman's revolution of the late 60s - early 70's) Taken from 1963's Fascinating Womanhood by Helen B. Andelin
Ms. Andelin's book was rereleased, with a strengthened Conservative Christian bend, in 1982, and remains a very popular advice book with that group today, reportedly often handed down as a wedding or engagement gift. |

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of pages where people sure do sound as if it's genuine. Just do a search on "Housekeeping Monthly". Sometimes Folks gullibility really amazes me. And yes, I do agree that SOME of the sentiments in said hoax very popular during the period. However, husbands had responsibilities to their wives and families too. |

A man was walking on the beach in Hawaii and tripped over a bottle. He picked up the unusual bottle to see what was inside of it. He rubbed the outside of it to get a better look..... and a Genie popped out. [ Edited by: hellotiki 2008-07-04 13:55 ] |
