This reminds me of the delightful lyrics to the Burt Bacharach & Hal David song Wives And Lovers. The tune is nice (I think the version I'm familiar with is by ** Jack Jones**) but the sentiment is the sorta thing I don't miss about pre-1970something America:

Wives and Lovers

Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...

Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

A little one sided, but fortunately Tony Velona penned some advice for men in his song Lollipops And Roses (It was also recorded by Jack Jones, an instrumental version by Herb Alpert.):

Lollipops And Roses

Tell her you care, each time you speak,
Make it her birthday each day of the week,
Bring her nice things, sugar and spice things,
Roses and lollipops,
And lollipops and roses . . .

One day she’ll smile, next day she’ll cry,
Minute to minute, you’ll never know why!
Coax her, pet her, better yet get her,
Roses and lollipops,
And lollipops and roses . . .

We try acting grown up, but as a rule,
We’re all little children, fresh from school . . .

So, carry her books, that’s how it starts,
Fourteen to forty, they’re kids in their hearts . . .
Keep them handy, flowers and candy,
Roses and lollipops,
And lollipops and roses . . .

"Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him."

I know I know, it means "happy", but the immature side of me still giggled!

I think it means bring a hot friend over every once in a while to mix things up.

I know that in the minds of most of the straight men I know, if their woman was "a little gay" that would definitely make her "a little more interesting"

 Yeah, right!

I guess we should all be glad Karen was a product of this era, otherwise she may have been a serial killer....

Yeah, like that's ever going to happen again. sigh

I always knew I wanted to be born in 1930, just ready for the fifties :)

I think this is a Hoax. Why is there "Advertising Archive" listed as a credit for the image, which by the way, is the cover for the a 1957 edition of the British "John Bull" magazine? I could find absolutely no evidence a "Housekeeping Monthly" magazine ever existed. The qualities listed are outrageous even for the 1950's:

"Don't complain if he is late home for dinner or even stays out all night."

Give me a break!

Atomic, as always, your allegiance to skepticism is admirable

undetermined.

Speaking as a single mom, I relate to the need to be left alone when you first get home from the office. sigh there are days wish I had a good wife to come home to.

One that knew his place.

Nobody was seriously thinking this particular bit was real, but it's not far off from what the establishment was trying to tell the mid-century woman (in a desperate hope to stave off what eventually because the woman's revolution of the late 60s - early 70's)

Taken from 1963's Fascinating Womanhood by Helen B. Andelin

Do's:
Accept him at face value.
Admire the manly things about him.
Recognize his superior strength and ability.
Be a Domestic Goddess.
Work for inner happiness and seek to understand its rules.
Revere your husband and honor his right to rule you and your children.
Dont's:
Don't try to change him.
Don't show indifference, contempt, or ridicule towards his masculine abilities, achievements or ideas.
Don't try to excel him in anything which requires masculine ability.
Don't let the outside world crowd you for time to do your homemaking tasks well.
Don't have a lot of preconceived ideas of what you want out of life.
Don't stand in the way of his decisions, or his law.

Ms. Andelin's book was rereleased, with a strengthened Conservative Christian bend, in 1982, and remains a very popular advice book with that group today, reportedly often handed down as a wedding or engagement gift.

Damn...I'm sure glad that ad was a "Hoax" because if that was the real advise to women back then gees...pretty hard. It could be a recipe for divorce, except that you couln't complain!

But...... ah..... oh, never mind.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of pages where people sure do sound as if it's genuine. Just do a search on "Housekeeping Monthly". Sometimes Folks gullibility really amazes me.

And yes, I do agree that SOME of the sentiments in said hoax very popular during the period. However, husbands had responsibilities to their wives and families too.

No buts about it, a good marriage will have a two way street of communication and trust, along with support, love and honesty.

Well, the lyrics I posted to the two songs were real songs from the early 60s, and I think both of them got Jack Jones Grammys or at least Grammy nominations.

well of course its fake, but I'm sure that many people thought that way back then. and scary enuff that some still do today.

but I guy can dream can't he.

Absolutely! And there's even a town for people like you; it's called Stepford.

Don't forget the husband's prerogative that once you hit 40, he can trade you in for two 20's. :D

1950's and 1960's influences of the time that played upon this theme...

I Love Lucy

Ozzie and Harriet

Harriet with the kids

The Flintstones

The Jetsons

Males that escape being consumed by the females can go on to fertilize other females.

A man was walking on the beach in Hawaii and tripped over a bottle. He picked up the unusual bottle to see what was inside of it. He rubbed the outside of it to get a better look..... and a Genie popped out.
"You have one wish," said the Genie.
"I'd like you to build me a 4 lane freeway to the mainland, so that I could visit my friends whenever I want," said the man.
"Well," said the Genie,"That would be very very difficult. Could you pick another wish?"
"Sure," said the man.
He said, " Genie! Have my wife wake me up in the morning with a blowjob once a week, for the rest of my life."
The Genie thought & thought......
"Uh....How many lanes did you want on that freeway?"
