This second guy I'm making from a piece of NotMahogany I got from 4WD.

The head is about 6" tall. I started it at Hodaddy's Chop a while back.

Bowie Wowowie

Wowowie ! It's killer work !
I love your not mahogany moai :)
Looks like not cedar too

Benjamin.

Not Cedar! Not Basswood! What Not!
Me loves 'em.

B

Man those have to be some of the Most traditional, REAL Looking Moai I've ever seen. If I were an Expert, I could say how fantastic they are but I'm a Lowly wood butcher, but I'm learning!
:D  :P

Interesting start. What is NotMahogany? Can't wait to see the finished product.

B

Your a...

S

Nice work looking really cool.

B

Update ?

C

Feliz CumpleaƱos amigo! :) (perdon)

B

Thanks Benjamin, Surfintiki, Benz (you lowly wood butcher):), Lizard, Babs (cool robot!), and Seeks!

What is NotMahogany? Well, it's certainly not mahogany. It could be Pine or Douglas Fir. Not exactly sure, but I do know it's NotMahogany. Make sense?
Yeah, I know...

Benella, I didn't have an update before, but since the Chop this past weekend I do now:

A bit more finish work and some stain and this may be my fastest carving ever!

Girly mugs update: None as of yet. Glazing research!

B

wow bowana
to take a piece of scrap wood and have it turn out that good
is really cool.could be the start of a green tiki movement
recycle scrap wood into tikis!

S

Looks like it has held up well for pine or fur.
I have never carved with either.

B

Whatever the wood is, it's B E A U T I F U L !
Nice work, Sir Bowie !

Benjamin.

B

Inspired by some animation?

Looks Good!

B

Thanks for visiting, Buzzard, Seeksurf, Benella, Benz, Jab, GROG, and Duddy!

I put a dark stain on the NotMahogany Moai, now he looks like he could actually be mahogany!

I put Minwax over the top of the stain, but I'm not so sure I like it. Makes it look old though, so Hmm...

Actually GROG, I was inspired by this guy! :)

Bowowana!

T

Looks good. It does indeed look old. With the way the grain is running it looks you've done well to keep the tip of the nose from breaking off. A pair of these would make some awesome bookends!

C

Nice self portrait! :)!

B

Great guy Bowana, though he seems to have been telling a few lies?? His nose is growing with each one! Cool carve, Difficult piece you seem to make look too easy!

B

Hey BigT, yeah I thought about making bookends too. I'd have them facing inward with the noses poking the books!

Clarita- Ha! :) Yeah, It was hard holding the mirror while I was carving!

Thanks Benz. Yep, the "no's" have it!

Now back to The GIRLY mug!

All glazed up and ready to hit the surf.
Ooohhh...I hate glazing sooo much!

Check out more ceramics stuff on Babalu's fab thread: Babalu's Fab Thread

Thanks for looking.

Bow-Wow-Bo-Wana!

H

I like the moai! The design comes out wonderful.

Damn Dave! You and Babs come up with the coolest stuff! The ladies are HOT! Was waiting to see how they would end up and you definatly know what you're doing!

Actually it looks like the Animation was inspired by the Moai in the beginning and the Moai inspired by the Animation, Full Circle! :P

Man, those Mugs are looking Shweet! I think you need to mass produce that one for sure!

B

I can hear the Drums! Sir B must be coming over!

Bring the Sisters over too if you want me to shoot them for you with my new camera...happy, happy, joy, joy!

B

Thanks for visiting, Haikai, Birdman, GROG, Benz, and Babs!

I finally got some shots of the glazed Alohas. Photo sessions are tough! Gotta get the best angles, ya know.

It took about 2 days worth of work just for the glaze. I wanted them to be very bright and colorful.

I also made these two little troublemakers. Hey kid, give us your lunch money!!

Thanks for looking.

Bo

Beautiful mug man, love the sister's faces. This is an amazing carve.

ZOUNDS!
Methinks thou fair maidens
doth be AWESOME!

B

Great shots Sir B!!

Still, no matter how you shoot these babes, ya just are not ever going to be able to capture all the amazing detail in this piece...like the sand glaze the babes are standing on...

I think this is hands down the best work I have ever fired in my kiln!

You Sir are the BOMB!

I hear the DRUMS!

This mug is so fantastic that my wife made sure I got to see it. The artistry and detail is amazing. I especially like how you have the one girl's arm set up to hold the cocktail umbrella and the other girl stepping on the tiki's tooth.

Thanks for visiting everyone!

Tahitiki-Thanks! The faces were the most difficult part.

LLT-Herro! Glad you could stop by!

Babalu-Yeah the photography was not easy. I must have taken 20 or 30 more shots that I didn't use. Thanks again for your generosity to us all!

GROG-Thanks GROG! The three of us shall be seeing you in a month or so, hm?

Birdman-No, YOU da man! Thanks for commenting!

faulknb-I wanted to have the figures interacting with the central piece a bit, so into the mouth went a toe and for the arm went an umbrella!

buzzard-Yeah, you're right. Now I have to come up with something to top this! I'd better get on that! Thanks, see ya at the Chop.

Benz-Well, maybe I make it look easy, but believe me it's been a real struggle. The key is to practice, practice, practice. I'll get the next one right!! I hope you will continue with yours. Thanks for checking in!

jab-Thanks Johnny, see ya at the Chop!

Paipo-Yeah, get yourself a set of robot goggles! Not that you really need them though. Thanks for commenting.

tikipaka-Hey, thanks for stopping by! Don't be such a stranger!!

hank-Carving an empanada, hm? Bring it!
