Aloha Amigos!
I'm writing this from "La Gran Tenochtitlan" A.K.A. Mexico City. I'm doing archaeological Tiki research "in situ" and pretend to uncover the Mexican Tiki mysteries. I plan to organize the information that is already posted in Tiki Central about Mexico here as an index and add my discoveries. Please help!
This picture below is from "ACAPULCO" Crescent books N.Y. 1978

The footnote: Discotheque.
It could be the Aku Tiki (which I doubt) the Bali Hai, the Kon-Tiki in Zihuatanejo http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=29876&forum=16&1 or a "new" Tiki discotheque we don't know about.
:-?I need to know!
Mahalo!

Hola Virani, I am sure you did. Can you post your discoveries here please? Last Sunday I was in la Lagunilla, ( Mexico City main flea market) looking for old postcards and a woman in one of the stands asked me what kind of stuff I was looking for, so I told her, and she replied to me that a french guy used to go there looking for the same things but that he left Mexico recently... I think he could been your brother. Am I right? Urban archaeologists of all lands unite!

Cool! That cover would be good for a full page spread, don't you think so, Zeta!? Love the picture of the stereo on the back as modern contrast, too, it reminds me of the liner notes of a Thurston Knudson LP:

"The distant peaks of the Himalayas brought within vision of your living room !"

Yeah, the cool thing about the embrujo tropical record is that the art and the music are the Mexican original reinterpretation of exotica... exotica reloaded.

The record was "Hecho en Mexico" and the back of the record states that the band hails from Acapulco. It is also signed by all the members and has the inscription; "To our Susy with a Lot of Love. From Acapulco".

I'm assuming this is probably an Acapulco tiki bar in the photo. Could it be the enigmatic AKU TIKI, whose coaster is on page 121 of the BOT?

The music is a kind of disco/salsa from the 70s, heavy on the synthesizer.

Sabu

Wow! Will we ever know? That definitely is the N.Y. Hawaii Kai's Logo. Maybe the owner had relatives in Venezuela and pursued the dream of ALL Polynesian restaurant owners: To franchise out and build a chain like Vic and Don did!

And will we ever find out what the connection between Polynesian pop and the Small Faces and Procul Harum was? :)

No mucho misterio, I´m afraid.
Venezuela isn´t really a good place for tiki.
You know, it is a tropical paradise in itself.
Hawaii Kai is classic of Caracas night life
Even Hugo Chavez was one of their patrons for a time.
But was a tiki bar only for a couple of years in the early 60´s, then a groovy discotheque and popular radio program during mid 60´s (whence the Small Faces connection) and a live Salsa venue during the last three decades.
Believe or not decor remained almost intact during all this time.
Closed as Hawaii Kai five or six years ago (today it´s called Nostalgia)but everybody still refers to it like Hawaii Kai.
