Aloha TC's,I've been a huge fan of this forum for quite awhile and thought it's time I joined in the fun.My interest in tiki started about 10 yrs ago after scoring my first piece of coco joes,so of course I wanted bigger ones so I put aside my obsession for monster models and got me some chisels and a mallet and as is my way just dove on in. Enough about me here's some photos of some of my carvings.[hopefully you'll be able to see them]

Howdy Tcr's,I've finally worked out how to drive this thing so here goes.

Sneaki Steve- good to see more Aussie artists on here, I've been watch'n
stuff and dig ya work.

Dr goat-Still dig'n the Monster kits but only when it's to cold in the shed.

Here's some progress pics of a couple of the pieces at the start of my thread.

Ran out of gas,so it was on to the fire for this fella.

Rear veiw after sanding but damm I didn't have a decent shot of the finished piece
so these I'll have to do for now.

And finally a shot of the shed for Benz,got to go so I'll post the

Seeksurf-thanks for taking a look,I'm a HUGE fan of your thread
your carvings truly are amazing!

Here's some pic's of a piece that I carved for Appleton Estate
rum and now lives at their Melbourne office.This was my first corperate
commision so I was pretty stoked on this peice.








Then time for burning and sanding



followed by 1 coat of merbau decking stain and 1 coat of
western jarrah stain an varnish.



Finally a shot of him on the door at the Watango lounge!

Big daddy-thanks for take'n a look,I was stress'n
over the knot in his butt at first but was happy
how it looked in the finish.

Here's some pic's of some of my earlier carvings
most of my piece's are carved from gum tree[eucalyptus]
with what ever else that I can get my hands on thrown in as well.

Watango, What a Super group of tiki you have. Nice work and your Moai are exceptionally clean and smoothe. That Gum looks as hard as the Eucalyptus we have around here, but Beautiful too. I'd Love to see more shots of your whole tiki collection there, there are lots of cool pieces there.

very nice set of tikis you have. really, really like the red moai with all the cracks. he looks like an ancient old man full of age lines. keep up the good work.

Benz-Thanks heaps for the comps,It's a real buzz to get
the nod from ones peers.:)I carve my piece's pretty much
by just chisel except for the odd cut here and there by chainsaw.
The moai's are a differrent story tho,the moai that you see on the bar
was carved out of pier posts that were removed from the southbank wharf
in Melbourne and have been in the water probably around 150yrs judging
by the hand beaten forged spiked ends that were still attached.I could
dig up a photo if your interrested.this wood is like stone and for these
I use a carba-tec arbotech disc (really scary)to rough out then lots of
sanding which drives me insane but worth the effort.I'll post some photo's
of my tiki collection for you soon but seeing this is the carving thread
I'll just slip em in here and there.:wink:

Marcus-Thanks for the welcome and yeah your right this was long overdue,
the responce so far has been great.Had a kool time at w/sun last year
hang'n out with you and Bob and hope to be back again this year if I can swing
some time off work.I have got afew questions for you ut they can wait as Im runnig
out of hands(this typing stuff wears me out)I'll keep ya posted on w/sun.

Glad you dig my stuff Hewey,I've still got a 5'ft piece of the wharf
left so I'll probably do another moai.As I've said w/sun still depends
on whether or not I can get the mon/tues off work as I mainly want to
see the 2 LA bands which are play'n on the Monday night.So hopefully
if the good lords will'n and the creeks dont rise we'll all be able
to meet and knock back a few beers.Watango

Love your Carving Shack, LOTS of goodies in there.
To make that Arbortech a lot easier to control get yourself a Good "Router Speed Control" to slow down that scary disc and make it safer at the same time. When you do get one, Don't get the cheap Harbor Freight type as they have No Torque and really limit the power. The good one has an aluminum housing and much better electronics. Try it You'll Love it I Promise. GO HERE for the best price up here and go for the Blue one.

Benz-Cheers for the heads up on the router speed control
box,I'll definitely check this out, hopefully someone local
will have these.I've seen guy's on this forum using those
Lancealot disc's which look pretty scary as well and to think guy's
run these things without guards,man thats INSANE!Im dig'n this forum

Wow, great chops over there, and that's a classic basement o' fun down there! Skate decks n' all!
Don't they treat those pier pilings with tar, or some stuff? Not too good for inhaling when sanding. But, man what an effect that Moai gives!

you guy's RULE!

Benz-I spoke to my bro/inlaw who runs a shopfitting busines
and hooks me up with cheap tools thru carba-tec and he sorted me out with
a speed control box so again thanks for the advice.

Surf'n-yeah your right.I wear a mask when using this timber
but hey with all the other toxins i breath in what the heck:)

at the auction he managed to fetch 740 bonedaddies and all up on the day

Welcome aboard!! I'm up here in sunny Queensland, it sure is awesome to see another Aussie join the forum. I'm loving your carvings! Hewey and I will have to think of some kind of excuse to travel down to Melbourne :P Sweet mug collection as well! I'm trying to grow mine but at the moment I've only got a small handfull of mugs - I either never see them or if I do see them they are WAY overpriced.. I saw a generic peanut mug for $165 the other day!!

WOW, Nice Chops. Great looking Tiki's. My hats off to ya for carvin Eucalyptus. I have carved some of that myself. It's very hard wood, but it holds the detail well.

Nice carves. Don't you love this site. Its the only place you can take photos of raw logs and get ooos and aahhs. By the way you tikis are fantastic!

Liana-Hmm sunny q/land!It's start'n to get pretty darn chilly
down here.Glad you dig my tiki's.Kustomlane will be having a
tiki show later on in the year feature'n Marcus Thorn,myself
and whole bunch of tiki related stuff so there's your excuse
for a trip down south covered so dont forget to pack ya woolly's.
As for the mug situation I started collecting them quite a while ago
when you could buy stuff on evilbay for ok prices as well as atrip
to the states back in 04 where I snapped up as many as I could carry
but with the value of our peso and the cost of ship'n I dont buy to
many these days.

tikimecula-thanks for the comps,not many fan palms round here so carv'n
gum trees(euc) is my eqivalent as there everywhere.

BigT-This ones carved from spotted gum,hard as stone.Glad you like.

Mudbone- the shrunken head on the wall is made of plastic and came on a
string with 2 more and a bunch of bones that Ipicked up at a carshow.

Greetings from Florida, I really like this peice, alot of detail going on, you also have a nice little shed to do your work in, very nice.. was thinking you were southern Cal., or Florida by the looks of the land, was suprised it was Australia. keep up the good work, and happy carvings..

abit more with the headress but the cracking towards the top
