Not to put a damper on all the great input and recap posts here but the above reminded me that some of you may be wondering about the resolution of the FEW unpleasant incidences that occurred

The hotel was not happy about them but totally understanding and agree that 3 or 4 incidents is very tiny for such a large event.
The fallout is we will have almost double security which sucks for us ($$) and also creates a bad visual (I'd rather see great Aloha shirts and dolls dressed up with flowers in their hair than a security uniform!) but it means everyone will be able to party in peace

I think these few instances could be easily avoided if the Tiki community steps up a bit. I noticed little things that would help, like if you see some joker at a room party and he gets drinks without tipping, ask that person to leave. We have to hold people accountable in this community if we are ever going to rid ourselves of the clowns that just don't get it. If there are people doing things that you know are lame, say something to them. I do love this scene and noticed a big part of what makes it cool is that there are no "tough guy" types. I saw one younger guy trying to act tough, giving people the mad dog stare. No one bothered to respond to him.This basically invalidated his whole deal and he lightened up. No one has time for frat mentality b.s. I, for one, have no problem asking people to chill when they get out of line. I'm no tough guy. Anyone who knows me knows I do my best to turn the other cheek. I also have no problem protecting a scene that I enjoy and am involved heavily in. This sentiment isn't just for Tiki Oasis, it goes for any event I attend. Tiki Oasis is a big deal. I love it and will continue to attend and do my part to keep it as TC as I can. Maybe everyone needs to ask themselves if the scene is something they love do they want to help correct the problems or just complain and hope others will take care of it? I'm not suggesting anything stupid like violence. I'm suggesting being vocal at the events themselves and confronting negative aspects to try and resolve them.

Matt, thanks for stating what I had sort of thought was obvious. If you see someone who is acting inappropriate don't walk away or ignore them. Contact hotel security, Tiki Oasis security coordinator Dr. Shocker, or Tiki Oasis security. Or at the very least, take their picture and post it so we all know who they are.

On that note, here are names and photos of the four jokers who made sexist comments and anti-gay comments and started an unprovoked fight that resulted in an innocent bystander going to the emergency room:

Yeah, the unfortunate thing in these types of situations is that most Tiki guys are not good fighters. We lack the alpha-male swagger of our hot rod/rockabilly sub-culture brethren (who would have thrown those douchebags over the balcony). :(

Well, there are a few people here that might fit the description:

And I am pretty sure "sandra dee/leleliz" would and could kick some serious butt! There is one particular funny story regarding something she did at this Oasis that definitely got my respect!

The problem with a Tiki Event is that a big star of the show is booze. So after awhile it brings in a crown less about Tiki and more about getting bombed.
I think that my First Oasis this year was Awesome but there was a kind of Roam is Burning feel after I looked out from my room after the fire alarm went off.

Every thing that was controlled by Otto and Babydoe went smooth.

But I think that the room party's need to be overseen by the Event/Hotel now. People throwing a room party usually don't have some kind of bar background or bouncer skills. Also they are there a lot of the time for PR so they want to play nice.

So security can play the bad guy,and truly make people feel safe.

It seems quit fixable

1. have all the early room party's on the top floors before people are truly bombed.Then by 8p.m. have all the room party's within 2 or 3 floors were you can have,1 guy at the door of the room party with a security shirt and 2 guy's by the elevator. You would not need security on the top floors because drunks are drawn to the room party:s like a bug to a zapper

2. Don't serve someone with out the right tiki attire. Or someone who looks like the walking wounded.

3. security being around shouldn't be a negative. People want to feel safe.

This would be easy to do if the people putting the room partys together arranged it this way and were told they had to have security outside the room.

Do I think the room should pay for security outside there room? No,the room party's are a huge draw from what i've seen.

So volunteers are great but wearing a security shirt vs. looking like a Mexican law ornament seems more fitting.

I hope this is not a bummer because it is just an idea from someone who has bar tended and worked the door t bar's before.

You cant trust that many people drinking to make the right choices or turn a blind eye to them.

I'm pretty sure these were the same guys who briefly came into our room party as well, turning things into a bad John Hughes movie for a few minutes. We quickly stopped playing our music and wound things down and they immediately left (we weren't feeling any threat of violence at the time--we were more concerned about their antics ruining the vibe of the party, and their attempts to turn things into Karaoke night by singing along in the mics). However, at the time none of us were aware of the fact that people needed wristbands to get into the room parties, only into the official TO events and the middle courtyard area where security was stationed. It is actually a relief to know otherwise, and we have been educated.

I had a good conversation with Otto that Sunday morning which enlightened me on some of the details, and if we host a room party next year we will make sure that we have the phone number for Dr. Shocker at close hand (and that anyone bartending or otherwise assisting does as well), and will call if we see anyone without wristbands or anyone out of control. I feel very bad about what happened to Tracey/Vixen, and as potential future room party hosts we intend to do our part to make sure Tiki Oasis retains its remarkably friendly and courteous overall demeanor, which is refreshingly contrary to most large scale events in which a hearty abundance of alcoholic beverages are being consumed.

I think that would present too much liability from the standpoint of the event organizers (and or hotel). It's probably better that the room parties remain the "private" events that they are.

Example, if someone get injured in a room party or if minors are mistakenly served aloohol, does the event organizer or hotel want to bear the liability for that ??

You can always have room party organizers send a form to the individuals room party host for them to take responsibility of there PRIVATE Party's.
The security person outside the room is in charge of eyeballing the individual by look and age and letting them in or not, BUT the bartender also needs to recheck age and functionality of the individual they serve. Ultimately the responsibility falls on the bartender and person Hosting the party.

the room parties are intentionally private rooms so that they can do whatever they want and not get shut down at 10pm or midnight like the hotel would want to do.
BUT
Like I said, there will be enough security to have at least one guard on each floor and even outside of the door of a party if needed. The hallways are the jurisdiction of Tiki Oasis and the Hotel and we are going to ensure that they are safe.

What I need from everyone here is a promise that they will keep an eye out for these sort of antics and report them immediately rather than avoid them.

Thanks for posting those jerk's info. I did notice a few folks in the hallways that seemed a bit out of place (not thosse ones tho) and looked to see if they had a wristband (they didn't). However, I didn't know what the protocol was about reporting them. I think having a guard on each level will help because if you have to go to far those w/out bands will be gone before you're back with the guard.

To serve and protect! oh and drink and swim, and shop. I'm good at all those things!

I'd of loved to help security and Shocker escort these douchenesses off premises!(had I not been in S.F. that same weekend!)
Glad the whole event had overall minimal problems, though considering the turnout and hours involved!

I have not attended a Tiki Oasis event, so I don't know how plausible this would be in regards to security, but several events I have been to recently have set up a system to send a text message when there is trouble or a potential problem. The rationale is that if people have a simple and anonymous way to alert security, they are more likely to not just look away. So I don't know if there would be way to set that up or what the logistics would be since we aren't talking about a permanent venue. But at least it might be worth looking into...

I agree Matt, There was almost a fight in one of the room parties (actually happening at the same time on the same floor as the elevator mug incident).. This guy walked into the room and shouldered the host... then turned around and ran into him again, looking for a fight. The host and I simply grabbed him and shoved him out the door, his girlie was yelling at him ("why do you have to be like that").

There is no room for this kind of stuff at Tiki Oasis. There is no fighting in tiki - just rum and love.

Couple of thoughts.

1. On security for room parties: Not necessary. The room parties originated in early Palm Spring Oasis' (kudos to Dr. Z as the originator) as a way for TC friends to celebrate each other, share their special recipes, and simply enjoy small enjoyable personable Ohana gatherings.

In the past few years the room parties have evolved into massive room venues taking on a life of their own. Many current party throwers did not have the opportunity to attend the PS Oasis' so they really do not know the history or original intent. Current Suite parties are cool and I'm not criticizing, but the original intention of the room parties was something different I think.

It's amazing now that there are so few incidents with the number of LARGE suite room parties (containing of a lot of people who do not know each other). I think it's a testament to the attendees and their dedication to keeping it good.

The issue here I believe is that because of the massive nature of the parties, they are taking on strong word of mouth exposure, outside of the event. And it does create new challenges when outsiders (ie Marines or drunk surfers) are able to access the hotel and wander into the parties. Perhaps as a general rule, without a valid age appropriate attendee wristband (ie adult wristband & not the kid wristband), no admittance into the party. That solves it right there.

AND if anyone sees someone wandering around at night without a wristband at all, call security immediately.

2. Sadly I was in the elevator when the incident began. King douche bag, the guy in the red shirt, held the elevator for 30 seconds (the alarm you heard) rallying his drunk buddies in. Mark Schneider was so drunk he could barely stand. The guy in the white tiki shirt parroted whatever the red shirt douche bag said.

Bottom line, they were belligerently drunk. The "surfers" were truly ugly loud abusive drunk idiots. Long story shorter, they are really not good drunks, were party crashers, and I hope they all have arrest records now. Wouldn't it be fun to send letters and surveillance videos to their frats, surf sponsors, and swim teams showing them this behavior? That might teach them a lesson.

The other people in the elevator did not blame this on TO. They blamed it on the idiots and were/are thinking about pressing civil charges. But they were very appreciative of how TO attendees jumped in to support and help.

For myself, I viewed these guys as ugly (in every way) drunk idiots, so didn't take it personally and moved on as quickly as possible.

Afterward, I went to the next party and shook off this truly Rare ugly incident. I enjoyed this fantastic even in every way despite a couple of idiots. Viva la tiki! :wink:

yes, but the marines crashed that party too later in the night. Got belligerent when the booze ran out.

I really don't want to lessen the energy and buzz from the room parties. I don't want to see the non wrist band people not come. I had family and old friends join us and it was so very magical. I know some friends of mine who attended and paid for T.O this year after spending an evening doing the parties last year. Yes, the mega parties have gotten really huge. They have taken on a life of their own. Last year we really felt it for the first time. Last year our Saturday night party was huge. There was a line from the elevator to our room door. That actually scared us. we (the hosts) quickly decided we needed to have a door man. We also decided that we would have a person roaming inside just keeping an eye on things. At one point we had a friend standing next to the coffee table because drunk girls kept jumping up on top to dance on it. If not for that home grown security I think we would have had so many things broken, stolen or people getting hurt.

This year we were expecting it. I did the door again. We built a stage (welded frame and 1 1/2 inch plywood, only a foot off the ground, with a non slip surface) for dancing. One of us monitored our balcony bathroom etc. When those idiots (elevator fight) came in our room the bar tender, Alley, quickly gave me the heads up that they were not behaving. This was before the elevator fight. I walked up to them and said "you got to go'" They responded: "Why?!" I said: Bartender said it, I believe it. Out!" He got in my face for a moment But to my surprise and his, Notch's blonde friend was there next to me. Suddenly Ron came out of no where. About five or six other Northern Cal and Southern Cal Tiki friends of mine appeared and stood all around him. He said nothing more and he and the others left.

I love Tiki Oasis for everything in it and everything that happens. We love throwing our mega party BUT. We realize it comes with a risk. This year we did not get the crowd we did last year but running it like a club security really helped keep us safer. The drunk surfer dudes didn't get to just wonder into a free booze room. First thing they saw was the door guy. I made it clear we were watching but still, they were welcomed. We wanted a fun time for all. The bar tenders knew exactly what they needed to do if things started going sour. We saw the elevator fight from the door. But since were were not official T.O. or hotel anything we stayed out of it. We could have only made it worse. Of course if the guy had run in my direction instead of towards Forbidden Island, I probably would have put a damper in his escape attempt. With love!!

My point? If your going to have a mega party, be responsible. Decide not only what decor to put up , what drink to serve but what to do if someone starts a fight in the middle of your living room! maybe pro active plan among the hosts about the steps to take to avoid it getting to that. Next year I will be more in communication with Dr. Shocker so if we have a problem with someone, we'll let him know, so when we kick problem people out, they just don't go next door and become someone else's problem. Let's not ruin a good thing because of a few. Just everyone be responsible for your little part. That's just my .02¢

You are always going to have a small minority of lunatics and douchebags wherever there is any kind of drinking. Weddings, parties, club gigs, etc. They seem to sniff out some way to score the booze and leave a wake of trouble in their path, in one fell swoop. We've all had many soirees crashed by these types, I am sure over the years. I have some stories, I tell ya. Pity it had to happen at Tiki Oasis.

well i dont know about you people, but more security means no fricken party! security is another word for cops! i cant believe that out of the 800 people that stay at the hotel and then the other 6 or more hotels of attendees nobody can handle 3 boys! 3 BOYS!!!!! over a thousand people against 3 BOYS!!! it is like everybody wants a great time but these 3 BOYS killed it for all of us??? i NEVER SAW THEM!!! i have now seen their profiles i now know their addresses, and phone numbers along with everyone else in the t.c. world, and guess what? NO ONE WILL DO ANYTHING STILL!!! this is a tiny event(these guys causing bullshit) out of 4 days this was the incident and now its been a week and they get all the press!!! we are giving these schmucks so much attention and energy its fucking rediculous!!! tiki oasis is a untouchable event meaning that: you CAN attend a party in someones room, you CAN see a band on every floor after hours, you CAN walk around with a drink wherever you want whenever you want with NO DRAMA, you CAN be lurking back to your room at 4 am and ITS NOT WEIRD, you CAN have a drink at my trailer after ice bar closes down, you CAN!!! put more cops on every floor in every entrance way, in front of every room,and guess what??? one more thing be very cautious and dont be dumb and attack these people online, its evidence against you that is not returnable, meaning if you send hate or what may be considered threatening posts they can be used against you!!! i have seen this recently about a dumb tattoo show on tlc called tattoo school, the entire tattoo community is very offended by this butchery on humans by people who are not trained at ALL! anyhow some people thought it may be a good idea to really let the people involved with the show know how they really felt and needless to say, they are now being looked into by the feds. the computer can be really awesome but it can also seal your fate, so be good to one another and be smart!

What an AWESOME event Tiki Oasis 2011 was!! And kudos to Otto, the Crowne Plaza, all the volunteers, vendors and performers who put on an amazing event!!!

I met an amazing bunch of friendly peeps who really helped me out on my whirlwind tiki tour of California. You guys really made my holiday - MAHALO!!

Yes, it was great. It was a blast seeing old friends and making some new ones. Mucho impressed with all of the option that were offered.
Great Bands and some awesome room parties. Also I was super impressed by the amount of vendors that worked the show. These guy's obviously life the live style year round.

...here are names and photos of the four jokers who made sexist comments and anti-gay comments and started an unprovoked fight that resulted in an innocent bystander going to the emergency room:
Mark Schnieder, Hayden Britten, Trevor Watkins - aka Abalone Watkins, and Sterling Weatherley

Michael Votrian from La Jolla, wife Lorrie Reid Votrian, and daughter Becca Marie know these guys and are possibly the reason these guys showed up at Crowne Plaza. And they are related to Ralph Votrian Jr. who was also at Tiki Oasis this year and last year

First off let me say that what happened with these losers goes against everything that is the spirit of Tiki Oasis and was horrible and unacceptable. I hope they get whats coming to them, but even more I hope that sometime soon they grow up and become decent human beings.
With that being said I would like to set the record straight in regards to any suggested involvement on our part. My husband Ralph and myself have been attending TO for the last four years and certainly do not want our names or reputations to be maligned in any way. It was very upsetting to us to see our names even mentioned in this post though I understand everyone is just searching for answers. We countdown the days to this event with great anticipation every year and look forward to once again seeing all the fantastic people we have met! The friendliness, acceptance and diversity of this crowd is like no other. We are from Ventura and do not know these kids nor have we ever met them. We have no knowledge of how they got into the event and would certainly never associate ourselves with people that would behave that way, let alone bring them in. If my niece Becca knows them, I am certainly hoping they are not her friends. I have not spoken with Mike and Lorrie about this because until I read the post I would not have known to link them with what happened. I do know they would never condone the behavior of these boys.
Please, please remove Ralph's name from this post and do not associate it with these awful boys and what they did.
Looking forward to attending the many (belligerent teenage boy free) TO's in the future.

People, I suggest we don't turn this into a witch hunt. Let's just view the whole thing as a lesson and be prepared to sack up next year. Sleestak has another valid point, cops = oppression. I think it's sad that a community that seems so strongly connected on so many levels can't seem to police their own environment.

People. If you have a party, be responsible for your own room. If your going to have a mega party, your working all night. You don't get to sit back and enjoy your guests. You have to love enjoying the work. When the doors open, its bar work till dawn!

If you have a designated bar tender and a designated DJ, have designated security. Not gestapo guys but just have someone who keeps watch on the goings on. I'm telling you thats all it takes. This year Tiki Hell had nothing stolen and no idiot problems in the room. the worst thing was that a spotlight bulb was broken. Not even a tiki torch on the go go stage was hurt! Thats cause we watch things like hawks.

Don't call hotel security or the cops. Please Tell Dr. Shocker first. The last thing you want is the hotel getting annoyed. 99.9 % of the time its great at the room parties! But there are tons of drunk folks wondering about. Hey, if your going to make omelets, your going to break some eggs. Get over it.

So originally, a few pages back, Baby Doe asked us what we liked about the event. I'm going to go there again. One of the things I really liked was the friendly happy environment. Even outside of the rum, people are there to have a good time, and I believe 99.9% did overall. Despite any glitches, it still was a heck of a lot of fun. Would love to read what other people liked as well.

I enjoyed the music this year a lot. There was a fun mix and dancing is always a big part of the party for my family. i thought the indoor vending was great and had a higher attendance than previous years. I also ate at the restaurant a couple of times and the buffets were both good for the price. The sushi was good also. The thing that I enjoy the most every year is the people. It's a reunion that anyone can join in on. I loved seeing people take pics in the Tikijuana Jail. And I thought the whole event was one giant smile.

Dan would say SHOPPING indoors and outdoors. I would say going on vacation with 200 friends. Making new friends or seeing TC friends in person for the first time. This year we tried out a balcony room over looking all the entertainment. We had friends share the view and we stayed up for the whole show each night. We had a blast. We also loved the room parties and I made a new friend Stephen B. room 1511 at 9 am, it was terrific to have an early room party to attend.

Going about the day from hug to hug makes for a very happy vacation. We also enjoyed the meals and the buffets at the Islands. After five years in a row we look forward to seeing the servers who recognize us as well.

This years mug was terrific and all the artists had fun things for sale. I loved being part of the art show and I hope to do it again next year. I'm so sorry that I missed seeing a few friends who were there like 1961Surf. Was TikiG there?
MadDogMike was there if only in my mind.

So I thank you Otto and BabyDoe for putting on the greatest event. The only downside is I get one vacation a year and I can't give up Oasis so I'll never see the rest of the world. Oh well I can't take 200 friends on a trip like that. Cheers until next year, Wendy

I loved the vending...

I found 2 things that had been on my wish list for the longest time...

1. A DVD copy of "Hell's Half Acre". A 1954 Film Noir filmed on location in Hawaii, featuring the Waikiki Don the Beachcomber. (Also I'm a Marie Windsor completist.)

2. Bas Sheva's "The Passions", produced by Les Baxter. I found and purchased it on CD and in vinyl BOTH (!!).

Not to mention a bunch of vintage abstract-design barkcloth Aloha shirts. Tiki Oasis was one-stop Tiki shopping for sure. :)

The room parties were GREAT. The Ding Dong Devils were rockin' as always and I was really impressed by Kick the Reverb's band, The Sand Devils. Their new CD has been in heavy rotation. And The Hula Girls were great in the car show setting. The outdoor acoustics really suited their music.

I spent so much time in the room parties that I missed all of the "official" entertainment that I bought the wristband for. How ironic. :D

And Swanky's Mai Kai seminar was excellent !!

Oasis had a very unique vibe compared to Mojave, Caliente, and Hukilau. It was less an intimate classic Tiki-style affair and more a surreal Mid-century pop culture carnival that I enjoyed very much. I like where it's going with the themes.

I'll be back in 2012.

(FYI, for those who aren't familiar with the Zamboanga, it was a historically signficant Pre-Tiki nightclub in Los Angeles which physically still exists, kind of.)

It shows that all of the burlesque at Oasis isn't just gratuitous mid-century entertainment, it's also relevant to our Tiki history !!

We did back to back Oasis/beach camping, so i'm just now feeling back to "normal". This was our fifth Oasis and like every year, it's like Disneyland for drunken grown-ups! I just wanted to chime in with my favorite moments of Oasis. The most interesting things of the weekend always happen in the elevator. For me, this year, it was meeting Sven in the elevator while we was loading up his car. He let me follow him out to the parking lot and sold me his GREAT CD - if you didn't get one - you should. I don't think enough has been said about Martin Cate's seminar. It was amazing, and I would have waited for hours to see that. Charles Phoenix, funny in every way. Love the morning yoga. I had never heard any of the bands before and I loved them all. I love how my tiki knowledge gets expanded every year. I had no idea I LOVED Herb Albert! Another great moment was when the fire alarm went off and all of us sleepy people came out of our rooms in our jammies, the guy from Herb was straight across from me on the 8th floor...just watching his reaction to the mayhem was priceless (I bet he comes back as a guest next year!) The Cult of the Eye igloo room party was amazing, so much went into that, the drinks were great and the decor was over the top, bravo. I bought a carved purse from DeTiki (I LOVE IT), we got our first matching vintage outfits, and bought CD's from every band. Mostly I love the people. We starting coming not knowing anyone. Now we have a whole crew of people we can't wait to see each year. Thanks Otto and Baby Doe, I can't imagine why you take on such a task each year, but I sure am glad you do. Only 346 days till Tiki Oasis 12!!
