I am not going to monkey around with some want-a-be Euro-spy trash. I am going with the real deal, the Bond franchise itself. What I have is the forgotten little step-child in the Bond series. I was fortunate to have viewed this fiasco during my sophomore year in high school.

After The Man with the Golden Gun was met with mixed reviews and lower than expected box-office receipts, Bond producers were in put in a scramble to find someone to salvage the franchise. They looked for someone who was British, who had a big name star power and sex appeal. After a rushed search which involved much panic they thought they had landed the perfect choice. Yes, the one and only Mick Jagger was cast as the martini sipping secret agent in the only unreleased film in the series. The film, For Special Services, performed so poorly with test audiences that Harry Saltzman burned the original footage and left the franchise in disgust to never return. I had the fortunate opportunity to be a member of one of these test audiences and was about the only one in the focus group who thought that the movie was salvageable. I especially liked a scene where Mick turned to the camera, winked, and said “Sometimes I just can’t get no satisfaction.” Everyone in the focus group, myself included, strongly objected to an implied theme of Bond being bisexual. (There was a scene where Jagger and David Bowie were shown in bed together talking). We all preferred Bond as a chauvinistic womanizer.

The film had a disjointed plot that basically had Bond going after Markus Bismaquer (played by William Holden) who was suspected of reviving the criminal organization SPECTRE. It turned out to be his wife who was actually the daughter of Blofeld. The movie ended with her being squeezed to death and eaten by an anaconda. The special effects of the time were not able to pull this off effectively to a realistic level.

I remember much of the movie took place at Bismaquer’s big mansion ranch in Texas where he dabbled in dealing in high end art. Bowie played a scrupulous art dealer. Barbie Benton was absolutely gorgeous as Bismaquer’s daughter Daisy. Dustin Hoffman was brilliant as Felix Leiter in the three minutes or so he was in the film. In the movie’s climax he came to the rescue of his daughter Cedar Leiter (Jean Shrimpton) who was Bond’s female sidekick agent.

I also remember how some in the focus group joked about how this is “Bond meets the Rolling Stones meets the TV shows Dallas and the Dukes of Hazzard” (both popular shows at the time). My buddy, who was also part of this focus group held at the Westminster Mall (CA), made the most stupidest suggestion of them all. He recommendend that Henry Winkler (The Fonz) become James Bond. Right or wrong, Roger Moore returned to the role a year or so later in 1977 in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Trivia Note: The current song, “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 is a surreptitious tribute to Mick’s failed attempt to capture the essence of Bond.

That's awesome Rum Dog! I bet it had some really cool Rolling Stones "spy themed" songs in the sound track? Obviously "Brown Sugar" everytime Pam Grier appeared on stage and "Gimme Shelter" is a shoe-in. What about "Fingerprint File","Highwire","Moonlight Mile","Parachute Woman","Rough Justice", etc.

Ok, Back about 8 months ago, fresh off my first trip to T.O., excitement over seeing Mr. Bongo Jack Costanzo, and around the time the spy-theme for '12 was rumored, I floated the name of a TWO of old school musicians still performing that I thought might be a possibility. Looking at the oasis website I see that the headliner for Saturday night is still TOP SECRET. So here's my dream/wish list.

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE VOLUNTEERS!
The deal is: volunteer for one shift (typically 5-6 hours) and you get a Thursday - Saturday pass (that is a $70 value!) !! The Tiki Oasis team sat down and really refined our volunteer needs for this year and we have set-up a schedule that is based on those needs. The biggest change this year is that volunteers will be assigned 'areas' rather than specific tasks... So even if you love helping out with a specific symposium you might be scheduled to help with that symposium but ALSO help out with our other symposium needs... all within one 'shift'. This is what we need for Tiki Oasis so that is how we have the schedule set-up. Also note that all volunteers must attend a mandatory volunteer meeting. We have a survey for you to fill out with the volunteer times that would work best for you... we will try to match people to the times they want based on their skills.

Hey,

Are there any agents interested in quadrupling up on a room for Friday night and Saturday night? I'd like to get a "Leisure Room, aka Golf Course View" with Two Queen Beds for $175.00 a night. (that's about 43.75 each per night. We can haggle over the queen beds later.)

from the Tiki Oasis website: These rooms are on the north side of the Tiki atrium closest to the back parking lot. The balconies of these rooms look out onto a scenic golf course and river walk. These rooms are usually quiet but can be noisy if you are on the 4 - 8 floor adjacent to party suites.

I saw the Plugz once but I don't know if it was the Tony version. I definitely saw the follow-up band Los Cruzados a bunch of times in the mid to late 80's. I don't know why but I find this revelation shocking (but in a good way).

The mustache is none other than the one Sean Connery sported in the 1970 Hallmark Hall of Fame After-School TV special "Border Penetration" where James Bond worked with the CIA to stop illegal drug trafficking along the Tiajuana border.

Unfortunately that outfit was only the tip of the disturbing Bond image iceberg. In fact about everything in the film was disturbing. This after-school children's special had many inappropriate scenes that slipped past the NBC censors. Here are just a few.

In the interview in the above pictured magazine Connery stated that he refused to shave his arms or mustache for the wedding scene. The producers demanded, but he refused since it was not written into his contract.

Needless to say Hallmark-Hall-of-Fame Productions received a lot of heat over this debacle as several PTA groups from across the country were in an uproar.
