Do you see Secret Squirrel ??

It's not Secret Squirrel !!

This one is a true test of 1960's (kid) pop culture in Los Angeles. I think the show only ran locally.

Think Gigantor, Kimba, and Marine Boy.

I think it's amazing that ATP missed that with those 3 clues you gave.

Bear

I picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue......

I know it's not Cool McCool.

Now it's bugging me, Because I have no memory of this cartoon (Maybe I was to busy watching "The Man from UNCLE"
or Secret Agent/Dangerman)

I actually preferred Spy Shows to Cartoons as a kid.

RD

The secret agent is Koichi Hoshi.

A duck, horse, and rabbit could only be the Amazing Three. Captain Bokko (rabbit), Nokko (horse), and Pukko (duck).

In the American version of the series (released in syndication through Erika Productions in 1967), Bokko's name was changed to Bonnie. Nokko became Ronnie, Pukko became Zero, Shinichi was renamed Kenny Carter, and Koichi was given the name Randy.

Edit: Googled this info. Never saw the show. I do remember watching Kimba, Gigantor, and Speed Racer on local LA tv stations in the 1960's.

Stupid Google !! Takes all the fun out of trivia.

Actually Brudda Bear got it first but gave ATP the chance to figure it out. :)

The Secret Agent's name, in the translated cartoon from Japan, was Randy Carter. He was the "James Bondian" brother of a young boy who befriended the Amazing 3 and often got them out of scrapes. The Amazing 3 themselves were also spies of a sort, sent from an alien world to assess the Earth, taking on an undercover animal form.

I have never met another person who remembers this show. I often used to think it was a childhood dream of mine.

RD

Sorry John-O, I wanted to put ATP out of his misery.

This show was probably not shown on Sheriff John or Hobo Kelly which I associate with the local Los Angeles cartoon scene of the 1960's. I think I watched the Japanese Cartoons (Kimba, Gigantor, & Speed Racer) on channel 28 which made for bad reception and a snowy picture. The Amazing Three was probably beyond the reach of my tv's rabbit ears.

J

Hobo Kelly and Sheriff John ?? I remember eating baloney sandwiches on TV trays watching those shows, my mother warning me not to spill my milk in the den.

The Amazing 3 actually ran on local TV (as did other translated Japanese cartoons in the 1960's like Gigantor, Marine Boy, 8th Man, and Prince Planet). I know because we didn't have a channel 28 on our TV until the 1970's.

Thanks for posting that opening clip Rum Dog, the exact plots of the shows escape my memory, but I DO remember that song. :) Maybe other people's cool parents were actually taking them to see "Thunderball" and "You Only Live Twice" at the movies. I had to get by with cartoons.

That's why you got me John-O, I never saw or heard of the show, But I do
remember "Prince Planet" & the rest of the Japanese cartoons from the 60s

I also preferred Gerry Anderson's shows (Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet)
I did watch Sheriff John & Hobo Kelly (Remember Diver Dan?)

Good question since only a few Tiki peeps knew it (Thanks Rum Dog for the answer)

I remember that UHF channel. It was not channel 28, which was alway PBS, but fifty-something. They showed Adams Family reruns and Japanese cartoons back in the Sixties. Every commercial on that channel was for some sort of fruit stripe gum.

Jeez, I cannot remember where I last left my car keys but I can remember obscure Los Angeles UHF channels from the Sixties. Should I be ashamed of myself?

  4. Space Ghost

  5. Jonny Quest

  6. I especially like the jazzy incidental background music from Spider-Man (1967)

Hoyt Curtin. It was Hoyt Curtin for almost all things Hanna Barbera. :)

Still not sure who composed the Spider-Man jazz though. :(

Is this all really "Crime Jazz" though ?? Sharp horn riffs set against action sequences always evoke that musical genre for me, even it it's for cartoon superheros.

BBC had a show on called Modern Spies ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01fqc6z ). I found part 1 very interesting. Both part 1 and 2 are on YouTube, here are the links:

Part 1

Part 2

Should be mandatory for entry into Tiki Oasis this year!

Channel 52 before it went all Spanish.

Yup, 52 is the number....Those where the days, No cable, No VCRs, Just 5 or 6 channels
if you lived in the city.......real prizes in your crackerjacks, The kind you could choke on.
Lawn Darts & Slip-N-Slides, It was a good time to be a kid.
The world wasn't kid safe & we were better for it.......

Pop Rocks!

Wow...forgot about that UHF channel...is that who hosted the Dark Shadows show...seems like we didn't get that show very well, it was very shadowy for me.

J

I vote for the UHF channel to be NEXT year's Tiki Oasis theme !!

In the meantime, I spy... EUROSPY !!

And who's the real link between Surf and Spy culture ?? Why Mr. Moto of course...

MST3K presents this European Spy Thriller from 1966...

Hulu: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 - Secret Agent Super Dragon

In this espionage adventure, the "Super Dragon," a notorious secret agent, is assigned by the CIA to stop a Venezuelan drug lord from spiking U.S. gum and candy with a powerful hallucinogenic drug in order to take over the United States.

RD

A few pages back John-O mentioned this 1960's icon

But let's not forget the possibly the greatest secret agent of that era.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKmKgmCJ1MU (Song 1: Man called Flintstone)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMkFCQQZlEg (Song 2: Spy Song)

Fred Flinstone as the "greatest secret agent of that era" ??

Rum Dog, YOU of all people surprise me with that opinion...

I think the real answer is quite obvious. :)

And you can totally repurpose your Mojave props for a Lancelot Link tepee room party at Tiki Oasis. All you need are are the trench coats !!

RD

I noticed no one had mentioned good old Fred Flintstone as a secret agent. I was trying for something that had yet to be mentioned. You, of course, had already taken the Lancelot Link reference a page back with

  1. Mata Hairi (the Mata who spied for Democracy !!... and bananas)

That Lancelot Link episode from the picture you posted no doubt gave me the idea for Tikipelli. I used a picture from it early on for my posts for Mojave Oasis.

Hey lets not get me started on monkeys again. I am trying to change my image.

Oh you want to play that game, do you ?? How about this...

What connection does this 1960's sitcom character have to Spy pop culture AND the Surf Music revival ??

And no Googling the answer, either you know it or you don't !! :)

[ Edited by: JOHN-O 2012-05-07 10:43 ]

He was in an episode of "77 Sunset Strip" which I saw a few weeks ago
Star Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is an ex agent for the CIA in the show, Max Baer was also in
episodes of "Follow the Sun","Hawaiian Eye" & "Surfside 6" which gives him some Tiki Cred.

I would have to look him up on the Internets for more info, John.

RD

I don't think that is what John-O is looking for ATP.

This is too easy. I don’t need Google for this one.

Max Baer Jr. has not one but three indirect links and connections to the world of tiki. Later in life in a futile attempt to shed the Jethro image he sported an awesome mustache that made everyone in the 1970’s porn business envious. This no doubt was the impetuous for the many mustache competitions that have taken place at various tiki events such as last year’s Tiki Oasis and the Rumpus Room annual competition.

A second connection, Tom Selleck, who was an admitted huge fan of the Beverly Hillbillies and Jethro in particular, sported a similar mustache on Magnum P.I. which brings in several tiki connections. Selleck grew his famed mustache after seeing Baer Jr. on an episode of the Dinah Shore show in 1978 where Baer discussed how the Jethro character had typecast him and ruined his acting career. Selleck was impressed how Dinah was infatuated and giddy with Baer’s mustache. (Side bit of trivia is that Selleck nicknamed his mustache “Bodine” to pay homage to Baer’s Jethro character.)

Third link and as well as being a connection to this year’s Tiki Oasis theme. Baer was under consideration to play James Bond in “Diamonds are Forever”. This was just a ploy used by Cubby Broccoli to get Connery back in the role. Connery balked at first, but when rumors started that Baer got the role and the 007’s name was being changed to “Bond, Jethro Bond” Connery reluctantly agreed to reprise the role.

J

Good answers RD and ATP but not exactly what I was thinking of...

You don't remember Season 3, Episode 21 of "The Beverly Hillbillies"..."Double Naught Jethro" ??

It aired on March 3rd, 1965 which was when the spy craze was peaking right after "Goldfinger".

In this episode, Jethro decides to give up his dream of being a brain surgeon to become a "double naught spy" just like James Bond. He even turns the Clampett truck into a "double naught spy car"...

Which is also the name of a local instrumental Surf-inspired band !! :)

Damn, I knew that answer.
;-/

you just would wait for me to answer it.

I was hoping that Double Naught Spy Car would be on the bill for this year's
Tiki Oasis.
Considering that a couple of those guys are also in King Kukulele's band,
the Freaky Tikis.

The first season of the animated Spiderman show had original music by Ray Ellis. Original sound track recordings do not exist. A rock band named the Amazing Spider Band recorded an album with covers for those tunes.
The second and third seasons used cheaper production library music, mostly from KPM/APM.
There is a whole Yahoo group dedicated to this music:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spidey-jazz/
On that group profh0011 is the guy to contact about a compilation CD containing all the known tunes.

Spy-tiki I think you should add a new category to your amazing website...

You can call it SPY-der Man music. Ha, ha.

(FYI, TC's own spy-tiki is yet more evidence of the connection between Spy culture and Tiki culture).

I have the Banana Splits Album on my wall! Oh mighty ATP!

Forgot to reply to this yesterday.

Paul Johnson of the Belairs was asked about Mr. Moto and where that name came from.
he said it was a 3 part correct answer.

  1. Mr. Moto the spy was around that time.
  2. There was also a wrestling character that went by that name.
  3. and last but not least, but only slightly connected.
there is the surf stance the Quasi-moto

Notice the ironic ticket stub number: Secret Agent #000007. That number justifies a spy reference to be able to make a post here.

What, no "Gigantor" for John-O?

"Get the point ?" (as Lancelot Link quiped in the feature "MonkeyBall").

And as highlighted in the Eurospy film featuring proto-Bond fictional character Bulldog Drummond.

Sadly a forgotten literary figure these days. :(
