All Who-Was-Bond speculation became pretty much a waste of a jolly good time after the 2008 publication of Jennet Conant’s The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington. Roald Dahl, it turns out, wasn’t just the writer of the best children’s novels ever penned, husband of Patricia Neal (The Day The Earth Stood Still, Rowr!) and a major wartime aviation hero. He was apparently the sneakiest bastard who ever lived, both Churchill’s and Stephenson’s top agent and the one man who actually seems to have penetrated Roosevelt’s security services well enough to have spent most weekends with FDR at his cottage estate in his shorts while photographing every document he could get his sticky little mitts on.

He also bedded an endless list of Washington socialites including Claire Booth Luce, dined nightly on gold tableware and steak while the blitz reduced Londoners to beans and Spam, lied about his flying exploits, and seemingly became the only man in the USA not screwed by Charles Marsh’s nymphomaniac wife, mostly because his dick was simply too overworked already!

The logistics of how he became a sex machine were even more strange, and his short later series of very adult stories about My Uncle Oswald may have held a clue. Packs of marijuana, it turns out, were distributed to most top field agents in WW2 as a miracle truth serum. Spymasters had found that smoking out your target with pot-laced tobacco (aka “Turkish Cigarettes”) caused them to joyously spill their guts on any subject you decided to discuss at a local bar. Stronger pot, in the form of hash oil carefully injected into regular cigarettes (“try mine, they’re Turkish”) or dashed into their favorite Martinis (“I’ll mix”) caused proper ladies to become impatiently horny whores in Dahl’s hands, then extremely tired, and waking the next morning with no hangover - in that order; perfect for Roald’s plan to pillow talk his way through wartime Washington. Pocket flasks of super strong hash oil transferred by diplomatic pouch by his own published admission were probably Dahl’s ultra-secret weapon, also leading one to think it helped him to write his first short stories - like the brilliant early-psychedelic Shot Down Over Libya, most of which is spent on a bed watching the colors of the room dance around him.

Almost all of the key English spies retired to Jamaica a decade later, the verrah English soil of which supported vast acres of pot plantations. Coincidence? Not in Ian Fleming’s case, whose son-in-law Chris Blackwell founded Island Records - the most marijuana drenched music ever recorded, which is saying something...

Martin is doing 3 seminars on rum this year.

This is the first time he's trying this strategy, bless his busy little cocktail mixing fingers.

Two in succession on Friday; The Amazing World of Rum, in the Peacock Room. This is a smaller room and won't hold as many people as the enormous ballroom, but Martin wants to have an intimate, more personal room experience here. Doing two shows in a row is a GREAT idea!

His other show is the CSI Cocktail II event in the ballroom on Saturday.

Also, there is the Tiki Pulp Cinema seminar that looks amazing, the Growing Up Mancini about which people are already saying DON'T MISS THIS, the big Friday ballroom event of Gin Spy Cocktails, and the Spy Music History show that looks like my personal fave already.

The Roald Dahl saga became even stranger with the addition of Ian Fleming and David Ogilvy to the Martini mix, both of whom worked out of a top secret office in New York’s Rockefeller Center building. Fleming seems to have snuck around the city with an explosive gas-spewing pen, mostly doing the books for Stephenson, but what Ogilvy did was creepier; he invented a way of perfectly gauging American’s reactions to wartime news. Keeping America excited and enthusiastic about being England’s partner in the deadliest war ever fought was a careful, very delicate business indeed, and David Ogilvy made it into a science by studying the common man’s responses to a list of friendly inquiries. Paid two bits to fill out a questionnaire, the typical man off the street was given a list of 20 questions, most of them about sports or current movies. Only one was about England’s role in the war. That was the key question.

Ogilvy began by throwing out the other 19 responses and studying the results to that one exclusive question about England, which worked and gave him the answers he wanted. Then he started looking at the other 19 responses and noticed something interesting; nobody’s answers were EVER the same! He became obsessed with defining a pattern that would describe or categorize these other answers, finally realizing that they were telling him - indirectly - almost everything about the person answering them; their economic status, the firmness of their marriage, their age, intelligence level, sense of humor, political leanings, EVERYTHING. In the hands of a serious master spy, these became statistical tools capable of estimating within a few percentage points the attitudes and responses of very different classes and subcultures within the entire nation, and reporting to Churchill directly the help he could expect in any Allied endeavors with them.

What’s astounding and futuristic here is that Ogilvy didn’t just categorize the answers, he sort of did the opposite by using the answers to categorize the person giving them.

His weaponized propaganda tools developed into random sampling, subliminal persuasion and iris tracking devices that became the foundation of Ogilvy and Mather, post-war Madison Avenue's most powerful new advertising agency. Was a Spy !!

Oh sure there was the Gilligan’s Island dream episode where she played a double agent attempting to knock off Agent 0014 ("Twice as smart as 007") with a poisoned kiss...

But even before that fateful 3-hour tour, Miss Grant was "spying" and not just once but twice !!

In 1961’s “Armored Command” she was a sexy spy infiltrating a U.S. army troop station (left), and again in 1964’s “Fanfare for a Death Scene” (right)…

"Fanfare..", an NBC Kraft Suspense Theater episode, was especially Poly Pop significant in that it also featured Exotica girl Sandy Warner and Steve McGarrett’s soon-to-be arch nemesis Wo Fat (Khigh Dheigh).

After getting off Gilligan’s Island, Ginger reestablished her career and continued in the spy genre. Unfortunately she never got to be a Bond Girl but she was cast as a Matt Helm Girl in 1969’s “The Wrecking Crew”…

Another of her films that had a quasi spy sub-plot was the "Belly Dancers of Bali Bali". That movie was never released to the home market and the original production company has long since been out of business. :D

If you come to Tiki Oasis however you can hear the Ding Dong Devils pay homage to that "lost" film in a song of the same name. We hope to see you there !!...

Almost immediately after WW2, Ian Fleming began to write the Bond books - Casino Royale was published in 1952.

They were immediate bestsellers. My friend’s father, now a state judge, collected the whole original paperback series and told me that everyone bought them for the pornographic parts.

These were based on English agents and Roald Dahl’s experiences. Dahl's eyes, dreamy but intense, still have power:

Fleming’s best friend and hard-as-nails master spy David Ogilvy had contacts on Madison Avenue that ensured the Bond books being distributed, promoted and reviewed in the USA. I worked with Ogilvy's agency in the mid-80s and it was still known, even then, for playing nasty with any competition.

William Stephenson, (the man with the "hooded eyes") head of British WW2 Western Covert Actions, himself was one of the original investors in Shepperton Studios, the largest movie studio anywhere in the world outside of Hollywood. Although the first Bond film was filmed at Pinewood, Stephenson’s behind the scenes maneuvering pushed the Bond production through when absolutely no one in the known universe wanted to make what was seen as a sleazy film about spies-in-peacetime.

The location scout and music arranger for Dr. No was none other than Fleming’s son-in-law Chris Blackwell (dopey Island Records again) and was partially filmed next to Fleming’s Jamaica estate.

The final result was that this tiny group of chummy spies made James Bond an international hit, while (almost incredibly) persuading the world that England was actually a hip, classy and musically up to date country - all pre-Beatles era! The giant success of the Bond film franchise also generated more revenue for England than any 1 source before or since, and was one of the single largest taxation sources that England used for pulling itself out of the post war poverty it had found itself mired in.

Ogilvy then used the surprising Bond success to market shirts with a mysterious one-eyed spy character, sold British Gin as being drinkable, and pushed Rolls-Royce as the smoothest car on Earth. When the Beatles hit the USA it was Ogilvy who paved the way for marketing them to a suddenly Brit-loving America.

All of which makes one wonder; was the Bond Spy Craze, Gin Martinis, and British Music Invasion of the 1960s a fluke...

Or an extremely well organized plan...

The bald headed master criminal has long been an accepted archtype in Spy Pop Culture...

Most people assume it started with Donald Pleasence (far left) in the first full portrayal of Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "You Only Live Twice".

Mr. Howell also portrayed a similar bald headed villain in the Spy-themed Gilligan's Island episode, "The Invasion".

Consider this however..."The Invasion" aired in November 1966, a full 7 months before "You Only Live Twice" opened.

It was exactly Ogilvy’s mid-century consumer manipulation technologies that were later so mind-bogglingly satirized in the uber-psychedelic The Prisoner TV show, itself originally suggested by the real camp established in Scotland for WW2 spies who knew too much about the details of the D-Day invasion to be allowed their freedom.

For a slightly fictionalized version of the real events, read The Cooler, George Markstein’s mystery spy thriller. Markstein, co-creator and primary writing force behind The Prisoner, was a military reporter who found out about Britain’s most secret camp at a cocktail party...

then wrote about how a futuristic society could use advanced surveillance technologies to control their people's every move...
