As far as Sunday's festivities at the Chef, again there will be approximately 106 people there for the duration of the afternoon. Therefore, advertising in an exempt organization's publication is generally presumed to be placed for the purchaser's commercial benefit, even if it has no commercial message. However, this presumption is not conclusive if the purchaser's patronage would be difficult to justify commercially in view of the facts and circumstances. In that case, other factors should also be considered in determining whether a commercial benefit can be expected. Those other factors include: The normal manner in which the publication is circulated; The territorial scope of the circulation; The extent to which its readers, promoters, or the like could reasonably be expected to further, either directly or indirectly, the commercial interest of the advertisers; The eligibility of the publishing organization to receive tax-deductible contributions; and The commercial or noncommercial methods used to solicit the advertisers. In this situation, the purchaser of a separate advertising space without a commercial message can nevertheless expect a commercial benefit from the goodwill derived from being identified in that manner as a patron of the organization. However, the purchaser of a listing cannot expect more than an inconsequential benefit. Therefore, the sale of separate spaces, but not the listings, is an unrelated trade or business. Unrelated Business Income (UBI) Although 501(c) organizations are generally exempt from federal income tax, they do have to pay tax when carrying on regular business activities which are unrelated to their exempt purposes. The law governing unrelated business income (UBI) is a complex maze of exceptions, exclusions and modifications. The following list of "threshold" questions can be used to narrow down the field. a. Is the income producing activity a trade or business? A "no" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI. b. Is the activity regularly carried on? The form used to pay unrelated business income tax is Form 990-T, due at the same time as the Form 990 (the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of the accounting period). Exempt organi-zations are required to make estimated tax deposits if they expect to owe $500 or more of UBI tax. IMO much better than making the perpetual vending circuit . I never got the appeal of that as an artist. Im still accessible, I still have great friends I've made in the scene. Ive also seen how phony many of the people are who were there for me until I didnt serve a stepping stone purpose for them any longer because I've gone rogue( eye roll). Honestly I cant disappear completely from tiki because of the connections I still have and the future fans I will have long after the dust settles from the whole shit show of me trying to fit in with the clique. I'm just not playing the game that never suited me in the first place. If you arn't an artist at my level you really have no idea and the experience has been singular. My whole scene is better now than its ever been I've upped my game in every aspect you can imagine. paid off my house, honed my skills, maintained a high level of integrity, and I look frkn amazing for 51. If you look at the Kahiki salt and pepper shakers they were in the same style of the Hoffman pottery moai mug made for the Kahiki. Did Kahiki request these be made to match these S and P shakers? What came first the Mug or the Shakers? The salt and Pepper shakers were not made by Hoffman but by OMC as we can see by the stickers on the bottom of the shakers. Kahiki salt and pepper shakers had many different markings on the bottom as well. So here is yet another Hoffman marking, this one is very early I would guess. The new bars restaurants lack the history, the people (the most important part) ghosts of the past you can feel when you go in the place. When I was taping the Kahiki when they were tearing it down the inside striped, hole in the roof sun shinning in the bare room, you could feel a odd vibe that I would say were the many ghosts/memories call it what you will but you could feel it. Often wondered if I was the last person in the Kahiki as they did not know I was in there and an hour later it was down. They tore it down fast as they did not want some nut like me chaining himself to the building. Sorry Swizz I said Kahiki again. BUT there are a few good new place yet to live and make their own history. The hard part is the class of people that made and went to these great places are gone and we are left with some goofs that just can't live up to the cool club of days gone by. Just being honest as to what you like is WAY harder and has way less rewards than being true to how you see things. The concrete had to be taken off as it was all falling off, the wires that held it on were rusting to a point Where they were not holding on the screen that held the concrete on the rebar. Somebody had said you could have as least covered it to protect it but that would not have kept the condensation and freezing snow and other weather from getting to it anyway. The damage was bit more noticeable after an author for the Kahiki book Myers I think it was put her foot through the eye area of the statue I should have not told them to go ahead and get on it for pictures. Hey, I guess this makes them the last people to be on top of the old Moai before the tear down. I joked about how that would bring bad luck to her. But the two guys who removed the concrete took only a bit over 3 hours to remove the concrete but did start to bust up the top knot it was perfect before that, I should have watched them closer. But about a month after that Tim Swanky Glasner and his wife Stephany came by for a visit, Tim wrote the book on the Mai Kai and told me about some of the improvements being made to the Mai Kai sounds like it will be even better when they get done. It was great to see the Glasner's again as Tim was the first TC persons I ever met way back when. The Mai Kai is not a small tiki bar and we need it to be around for as long as we can keep it around. I told him I would help in any way that I can as it is the best tiki restaurant/bar we have ever been to! Eye hole and last time the concrete was on. Top knot damage. Kinda cool to see how it was made my wife thought it would make a cool topiary. Tim and Stephany buy the Moai. We don't like coconut so we leave it out when we make it. And heck the guy I sold them to has them in a semi outdoor local that has them swinging in winds and even some weather blowing in from the sides and they are holding up for now. Found this little turtle swimming around in our pond the other day, he is cool and we were feeding him even. But then as we were feeding him one night he thought that eating one of our fish would be a good idea. Well he soon found out that is the quickest way to get kicked out of that pond so he had to go, we took him to a nearby pond and let him go. Too bad he was kinda cool, but eating our fish is a no no. "Sure they cost more but they last longer" do they now, I was made to change the sockets and bulbs to LED bulbs on a few lights I sold to a place here and those lights looked fine after ( had to buy the even more costly antique looking LED bulbs) BUT my wife and I went into the place like three months after I sold them those lights and one light was out. And both those bulbs were brand new, heck they even just came out with the antique LEDs. How could this be those LEDs last forever! AND the guy said he just changed the other LED bulb the day before! So here is what they may have left out of the tests on these LED bulbs to get the results they wanted. Power outages, when I work at OSU changing light bulbs and then later on the High voltage crew I found that after a power outage the lights would be blown out all over campus. Working on the High voltage crew later when installing surge arrestors on High voltage switch gears I was told that when you throw the switch on after you fix that power outage a surge of power goes down the power line. These arrestors would take that surge to ground to save the switch gear. I never did find out if the lights on campus did not blow out as much after a power outage after we put in the surge arrestors, cuz hey I was no longer changing light bulbs and ballasts. It did help the save the switch gear, and we got less overtime due to blowouts. You get the same surge with lightning strikes only more so. Only wish I could live long enough to hear these new whippersnappers gripe when they get rid of LEDs they now like so well for some other new light. So after you remove the broken ribs you then replace them with new Pieces of rattan seen here. I saw that post by Jeff in collecting tiki and thought hey cool Jeff is posting and it's not just to promote a new book he is writing or a sale he has or a seminar Hes doing. Then I see he rips that Detroit tiki book that has a higher five-star rating than his book BTW. I do know and like Jeff but have seen over the years how he mostly does things for himself, but he always comes out smelling like a rose. I met Doug Motz once and acted like I did not know who he was, He was so put out, visibly put out. The thing is what do you do about a light you can't find any more and still want that light? you really end up covering the cost of making that light and end up with a few for yourself as any kind of pay off for making that light. Do try to keep the lights I made mostly things I have come up with but do look at others from the past for ideas. Have seen on here lights that are just like mine the more original ones I have done over time and one guy who I just asked to see a photo of it as it was in the background and he was all like "I have never even seen any of your lights" this was a long time TCer too that apparently never went to my light thread. Man it would be nice to at least say I got this idea from.... Do try to give credit when I directly use an idea, and have asked for permission to use others ideas like from a painting but have never used that idea after they said yes I just never got around to it. What's yer take on that. Funny you say that I told Mike about your tread here and he said he would check it out, but I also told him that if I showed you how to tie floats like I had just showed him you would be beating me in less than a year. Wish you did live nearby as we could make lights together. I did long ago show one person how to tie floats and asked him not to tell anyone he was in a tiki group and that group with him teaching did a seminar at one of their events on how to tie floats right after I showed him. Plus, a girl he knows well now sells more float lights than I do, I don't think she ties them the same way I do though to be honest. So, all that killed me wanting to do as many how tos. You know I was supposed to do an article in the new Tiki Mag on how to tie floats but it never happened kinda think the guy that worked for Amy was not so fond of me at that time is my best guess. Ha! the way Hospitals are run would not work in any business except government that's only because people MUST come to you and must put up with the way they are so poorly managed. My restaurant had a menu with prices, you knew what you were going to pay, at a hospital you have NO IDEA what kind of outrageous bill is coming. At my restaurant everybody pays the same for what they got, at a hospital some pay NOTHING and those people many times are the fine citizens that lay around and drink or do drugs all day and have no time for working AND those are the people that know how to get into the ER and many times are just looking for pain killers or a warm place to stay for a night, I talk to other nurse's. Time after time the day we went to the ER we would watch these people wheeled right into the back and get care right away. PLUS, it looks like some people don't even have to be citizens at all to get FREE health care just wait till that 6 plus million people get into your ERs over the next two years that does not even include the new babies that will be born here over that time. the market house story
The Old Market House Inn Restaurant, situated across the street from the site of Zanesville's original farmers' market, preserves an era of pioneer Zanesville while offering a gourmet menu in an atmosphere of the bygone days.

Farmers drove their wagons filled with produce to the first small, one-story market built in 1814. The second market, built in 1832, supplied an increasing population with meat and vegetables. In 1863 a heavy snow crushed the roof, causing a tragic collapse of the bustling marketplace.

The third farmers' market opened in 1864. In consisted of a first floor for market and a second floor for city offices. Hundreds of farm wagons would be hitched to trees and posts for several blocks in all directions three days a week. Cabs and drays clattered up Market Street from two railroad stations. Hotels with large dining rooms eventually opened their doors to accommodate the increasing commerce in Zanesville. On such hotel and the Barnett which stood on the site of the present-day Old Market House Inn.

The third market place was destroyed by fire in 1912. After a long controversy, the present building was completed in 1919 and serves Zanesville for nearly thirty years. After World War II, area residents began to patronize supermarkets and in 1946 the final farmers' market was closed and the entire building converted to city offices.

In 1974 James L. Adornetto Purchased this building, then known as the Casino Restaurant, from Tony Saup. Mr. Adornetto engaged Coburn Morgan, a renowned restaurant designer from Columbus, Ohio. Using London, England's oldest operating riverside pub, the prospect of Whitby, as a model, they orchestrated an extensive nine-month renovation of the historic building. In October of 1974 the present Old Market House Inn opened its doors.

Jim Adornetto, born and raised in Zanesville, has been a successful restaurateur in the city for over 50 years. He opened his first restaurant, Adornetto's Pizzeria, at the age of 19. In 1994, Mr. Adornetto opened Giacomo's Bread & Deli in the building north of Adornetto's Pizzeria, featuring European hearth-style breads and Italian deli with made to order sandwiches and soups.

Karst Sr. Robert William Karst, Sr., age 81, passed on February 12, 2013 at his home in the company of friends and family. Bob was preceded in death by his brothers Johnny, George, and daughter Kathy (Pabst) and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary; sister, Virginia (Hunter); sons, Robert Jr. and Patti, Tommy and Joyce, Danny (Mcquirt) and Patty; daughter, Sandy (Darrah); grandsons, Billy, Brandon, Shilo, Max, Sam, Alex, Patrick, Matthew; granddaughters, Britni, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Logan, Lillie and Julian. Bob was raised in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in the restaurant business. The Karst Family owned and operated the Broad-Nel Restaurant and Bob learned from his father the joy of hospitality. A graduate of Gahanna High School and a veteran of the Korean War. Bob was fortunate to enjoy a very colorful life, a long time employee of the Kahiki and Wine Cellar restaurants in Columbus, Ohio. Bob enjoyed Elvis Presley, loved to play cards and was always there when you needed him. Bob retired in 1999 and spent the rest of his life in the company of his wife, Mary, his children and grandchildren. There was this girl that I went to school with, and I saw her at a bar one night, well she saw me really and she asked me to dance, I forgot who she was I had no idea.
But I was so scared that I just did not say anything much at all let alone ask who she was and blow it.
She was much prettier than she was in school than I remember her being.
After some time I found out it was Lori Parrish nothing ever happened more than that dance.
Years latter I found out she had married and had kids, I found this out because she died of breast cancer in her late 30s, she was gone, so sad.

Well Andys girlfriend got married years latter, not to Andy and she was found dead in her living room naked.
She had been doing drugs with some guy and her husband came home and found her the guy ran off with their car.
Well her twin sister died a year later, I don't know what of but how odd.

What was wrong with that? GROG thought it was funny that we were talking about nicknames and our screen names are basically nicknames. Tiki people I see out in public often call me GROG, so it's basically a nickname.

“Poems carry a tiki torch for Kahiki” by columnist Joe Blundo

One of the most grievous crimes ever committed against Columbus architecture was the demolition of the Kahiki in 2000.
The restaurant was shaped like a giant war canoe, had a cultlike corps of devotees and featured flaming drinks, canned thunder and thatched huts. After standing at 3583 E. Broad St. for almost 40 years, it was torn down to make way for a Walgreens pharmacy.
But the memory lives. Its artifacts are auctioned on eBay, and websites recall its splendors. And now a collection of Kahiki poems has been published.
Kahiki Redux by Rikki Santer manages to evoke the appearance and ambience of the place despite the fact that the author has never been inside it.

Ok folks just to clarify things...

There's a very obvious reason for not being able to accomodate folks dropping in along the way...

With the exception of Hala Kahiki, these are all small venues and only hold around a hundred or so people, so all you have to do is be able to add. Two busses @ 53 people each = 106 Tikiphiles accending on these places at one time, I think ya'll can grasp that right?

As far as Sunday's festivities at the Chef, again there will be approximately 106 people there for the duration of the afternoon. The Chef does hold more people, so there will probably be limited seating available as we get closer to the big weekend. Hope this helps put thing in perspective.

Edited to reflect that ticket price does not include the mug, that's a separate purchase!

In “Landscape,” she describes carloads of tourists arriving “to lose themselves inside this romantic cocoon that serves up foreign paradise in pineapple carcasses and caricature tumblers.”

Santer, who teaches film studies and English at Upper Arlington High School, moved to central Ohio from Baltimore not long before the Kahiki was demolished. It had already given way to Walgreens when she became interested in it after she and her husband bought a house featuring a Polynesian room.
The room — full of lava rock, tortoiseshell light fixtures and animal-print fabrics — was designed by Coburn Morgan, who was also responsible for the Kahiki’s hyper-Polynesian decor.
Her interest stimulated, Santer began researching the restaurant. She interviewed workers, patrons and the two businessmen who built it: Bill Sapp and Lee Henry. They sold their interests in the restaurant in 1979. (Henry called Santer’s book “terrific.”)
Acknowledging their work is one of the reasons she wrote the book, Santer said.
“My motivation is just to get a memory book into people’s hands. I was so shocked that this icon was torn down. We’re in this bicentennial year, and Bill and Lee are still alive, in their 80s, and they haven’t been recognized formally.”

The book, which is available through Amazon Books or through her website at rikkisanter.com, contains eight poems, Kahiki artwork and a forward by architectural historian Nathalie Wright. She submitted the application that got the restaurant listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, a distinction that couldn’t save it.

The last poem, “Kahiki in the Museum,” acknowledges as much, envisioning what would be in a Kahiki historical exhibit: “Lipstick-stained napkins and bite-marked straws from virgin lips; a pyramid of etched glassware; a plastic volcano erupting in gleeful streams of snapshots that incriminate with outdated fashion.”

This might not be the end of Kahiki literature. Santer said she and Wright hope to produce a full-scale history of the place.
Said Santer: “I have great affection for that restaurant.”

Sales of advertising space. A national association of law enforcement officials publishes a monthly journal that contains articles and other editorial material of professional interest to its members. The journal is distributed without charge, mainly to the organization's members.
The organization sells advertising space in the journal either for conventional advertising or to merely identify the purchaser without a commercial message. Some of the noncommercial advertising identifies the purchaser in a separate space, and some consists of listings of 60 or more purchasers per page. A business firm identified in a separate space is further identified in an Index of Advertisers.
The organization solicits advertising by personal contacts. Advertising from large firms is solicited by contacting their chief executive officer or community relations officer rather than their advertising manager. The organization also solicits advertising in form letters appealing for corporate and personal contributions.
An exempt organization's sale of advertising placed for the purchaser's commercial benefit is a commercial activity. Goodwill derived by the purchaser from being identified as a patron of the organization is usually considered a form of commercial benefit. Therefore, advertising in an exempt organization's publication is generally presumed to be placed for the purchaser's commercial benefit, even if it has no commercial message. However, this presumption is not conclusive if the purchaser's patronage would be difficult to justify commercially in view of the facts and circumstances. In that case, other factors should also be considered in determining whether a commercial benefit can be expected. Those other factors include:
The normal manner in which the publication is circulated;

The territorial scope of the circulation;

The extent to which its readers, promoters, or the like could reasonably be expected to further, either directly or indirectly, the commercial interest of the advertisers;

The eligibility of the publishing organization to receive tax-deductible contributions; and

The commercial or noncommercial methods used to solicit the advertisers.

In this situation, the purchaser of a separate advertising space without a commercial message can nevertheless expect a commercial benefit from the goodwill derived from being identified in that manner as a patron of the organization. However, the purchaser of a listing cannot expect more than an inconsequential benefit. Therefore, the sale of separate spaces, but not the listings, is an unrelated trade or business.

Unrelated Business Income (UBI)
Although 501(c) organizations are generally exempt from federal
income tax, they do have to pay tax when carrying on regular business
activities which are unrelated to their exempt purposes. The law
governing unrelated business income (UBI) is a complex maze of
exceptions, exclusions and modifications. The following list of
"threshold" questions can be used to narrow down the field.

a. Is the income producing activity a trade or business?
A "no" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

b. Is the activity regularly carried on?
A "no" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

c. Does the activity contribute importantly to the accomplishment
of the organization's exempt purpose?
A "yes" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

d. Is the activity carried on with substantially all volunteer help?
A "yes" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

e. If the activity involves the sale of merchandise, has substantially
all of the merchandise been donated?
A "yes" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

f. Is the activity carried on primarily for the convenience of the organi-
zation's members, students, patients, officers or employees? (This ex-
ception applies only to 501(c)(3) organizations.)
A "yes" answer means the income is not taxed as UBI.

If, after answering these questions, it appears the income under discus-
sion might still be UBI, con-sider the following "modifications," set
forth in section 512(b) of the Internal Revenue Code. Generally, none
of these types of income is taxable.

Of course, there are a few exceptions within each category. A major
overriding exception is "debt-financed" income. If there is an out-
standing indebtedness with respect to the income producing property
(such as a mortgage), the income produced will be taxed in proportion
to the debt.

Finally, there are miscellaneous exclusions for certain trade shows, and
for bingo, but not for any other type of gambling activity. And 501(c)(3)s
who rent their mailing lists to other 501(c)(3)s are not taxed.

Ordinary and necessary expenses, as defined by normal income tax
rules, may be deducted in de-termining net income from an unrelated
business, and the tax rate is the same as regular corporate rates (or trust
rates for non-profits organized as trusts). Some special rules apply to
the computation of charitable contributions and net operating losses,
and there is a $1,000 "specific deduction" - the exempt organization
equivalent of a personal exemption.

The form used to pay unrelated business income tax is Form 990-T, due
at the same time as the Form 990 (the 15th day of the fifth month after
the close of the accounting period). Exempt organi-zations are required
to make estimated tax deposits if they expect to owe $500 or more of
UBI tax. Caution: Form 990-T must be filed if gross unrelated income
is $1,000 or more, whether there is any tax due or not.

Personally, I bristle at the tiki elitist/purists & the holy than thou attitude that comes with it. It's a whole "my tiki is better than your tiki" thing & that has always rubbed me (&, I think, FOMmers, in general) the wrong way. It's TIKI, for cripes sake, which is made-up in the first place. My art is on facebook. I no longer share stuff to the group tiki pages because the harassment was of the charts. This past year brought alot of deliberate bullshit from people in the tiki scene to discredit me for not willingly playing the stoopid social games. It may seem like I've tanked my audience but what Im doing is taking tiki beyond the myopic scene, and I'm the only artist who has the kind of work that can do it. or the inclination to do so. After this last weekends opening at la luz and the book release on tiki art I was excluded from. I had to make a statement about it.

If you look at the Kahiki salt and pepper shakers they were in the same style of the Hoffman pottery moai mug made for the Kahiki.
Did Kahiki request these be made to match these S and P shakers?
What came first the Mug or the Shakers?

The salt and Pepper shakers were not made by Hoffman but by OMC as we can see by the stickers on the bottom of the shakers.

Kahiki salt and pepper shakers had many different markings on the bottom as well.

So here is yet another Hoffman marking, this one is very early I would guess.

I can't make this stuff up, went to eBay to lift some photos for this question and find this sale for a Hoffman mug.
But it may put a date on the mug AND markings if you believe this seller, I do.

I saved it because it was such a big deal then for us to eat out. There is some unpainted area along the bottom, due to the manufacturing process. It measures 6 5/8" tall.

Hello, Yes, it was definitely from March of 1963, the only time I was ever there- out of town relatives took us out to dinner to celebrate the birth of one of our sons- he was just shy of 2 weeks old and was born 3-6-63. I saved the mug and napkin because it was such a big deal then to go out, plus they were "cool"!!! The drinks were decent & the small plates & appetizers were ok, but TOTALLY not worth the price. I get the serving size argument, but flavor has to be there as well.
They may need to work on their entry area, a better, more organized process welcoming patrons.
Bathrooms were clean & the bartenders were nice & funny.
They mini size fireplaces randomly placed on bare walls, may need to find a new use, weird.
We went once to experience it since it was right around the corner, but, I think that will be our only experience.

I'm giving two stars for cuteness. Overpriced drinks $10-$14 for tropical punch that doesn't pack one. We had the shrimp skewers, pork bao, side salad and dumplings. Nothing special about anything. A "one and done" for me.

We enjoyed the vibe of this lounge and the decor added to the tiki hut experience. There is limited parking out back off Liberty. It is more of a bar than a grill, so if you are looking for more of a food selection you may be disappointed. I got one of the frozen drinks on the menu - the Blue Hawaii. At $11 it was a bit pricey. It had a nice flavor and reminded me of a tropical vacation with its coconut and pineapple flavors. For our "meal" we shared 4 appetizer-sized plates: chicken wings (2 per plate for $7), bao buns (2 per plate for $9), dumplings (4 for $7), and shrimp skewers (2 for $9). The food was nothing remarkable - wings were overly sauced but large, bao meat was dry, dumplings reheated from a bag, and shrimp though tasty were underdone. It is nice to have options in downtown Powell, but I doubt I will be back.

Service was horrible. Waited about 15 mins for someone to come to our table and they only came because the four of us were starring them down. (Wasn’t even a busy night) food was okay. Had limited drink options. The decor was cute.

Huli Huli is purely an attitude place, with glitzy interior and fancy (expensive - like $14) tiki drinks. Some small plates, none of them very good in our one visit by a group of 10. Maybe the idea is a Night Club? But nothing to go with that kind of target.Lots of young women there, which might be a draw for some, but hard to see what they offer for a traditional crowd in the way of food or drink at reasonable prices. The owner was there and came around briefly, but didn’t really ask anything that could have been useful for him. Just perfunctory, check off a box of walking by.

I put this here so as not to forget how this what I call tiki lite bar will do over the years.
It has had LOTS of press the first week and even before it opened, they were very smart and had all the press type people and even that "expert" Motz come in for the free parties
before they opened.

This place is not really tiki to me I feel they put just enough tiki in the joint to be able to sell very expensive tiki drinks, tried to sell them old tiki stuff to no avail.

Get the feeling tiki peeps here in Columbus say good things about this place as it helps them in that they can go there and promote the tiki things the locals sell.

It looks like a Starbucks with a few Good tiki items and lots of Indonesian tikis, AND the TC type folks that have been there never show the Indonesian tikis in the photos of the place.
THEY know the Indonesian tikis suck so even they hide them by not photographing them.
When I saw these Indonesian tikis in the place before they opened they said "somebody else brought those in we are not going to use those" after I grimaced.

See now that’s a good point, but then that’s what I meant by a good blend in your ingredients.
Soung asked me what I put in my ham glaze and after I told him he said to add a small bit of Garlic powder, GARLIC POWDER!
In ginger ale, lemon, and candy ginger with a bit of Cayenne pepper Now Garlic powder too.

I do it that way every time now, too much Garlic powder and your FU%k*d, if you taste it you failed.

It’s best when you have a hard time knowing what is in something, you would have a hard time knowing garlic was in my ham glaze.

And I do put mint and lime in my Mai Tais almost every time.
We grow tons of mint just for that, I bet it may be hard for a commercial tiki bar to get and keep mint in the place on a day to day basis.
The Tropical Bistro had mint in every Mai Tai I ever got there, and they did not say they were some great fancy place.

The newer tiki lite bars make the real tiki bar the bad guy in this way kinda.
I told a person to a newer tiki lite and she said nothing about it when we left, guess I shoulda asked her.
But I told her to go to La Marianna when they went to Hawaii and they called me! FROM La Marianna! they LOVED it, there FRIENDS loved it! and these were not tiki people.

THAT"S the difference.

In many areas people are seen as authoritative figures or maybe experts on a subject and the way you get this title is to study that subject, maybe write a book or even teach the subject, Sven has done all three so he’s one of the authoritative figures that often define tiki.

Also I have not talked to Sven, I do not say this with any other motives other than I believe Sven to be a authoritative figure.
In fact I think I would do better and maybe have gotten more press with a different authoritative figure than Sven as I don’t think he really likes me all that well.

The new bars restaurants lack the history, the people (the most important part) ghosts of the past you can feel when you go in the place.
When I was taping the Kahiki when they were tearing it down the inside striped, hole in the roof sun shinning in the bare room, you could feel a odd vibe that I would say were the many ghosts/memories call it what you will but you could feel it.

Often wondered if I was the last person in the Kahiki as they did not know I was in there and an hour later it was down.
They tore it down fast as they did not want some nut like me chaining himself to the building.

Sorry Swizz I said Kahiki again.

BUT there are a few good new place yet to live and make their own history.
The hard part is the class of people that made and went to these great places are gone and we are left with some goofs that just can't live up to the cool club of days gone by.

Just being honest as to what you like is WAY harder and has way less rewards than being true to how you see things.

Can't trust a guy who likes everybody and likes everything as he is lying to himself, so a lie to you is that much more easy.

Here is a bit of an update on the Kahiki Moai this is the one from the left as you faced the Kahiki front door.

The concrete had to be taken off as it was all falling off, the wires that held it on were rusting to a point Where they were not holding on the screen that held the concrete on the rebar.

Somebody had said you could have as least covered it to protect it but that would not have kept the condensation and freezing snow and other weather from getting to it anyway.

The damage was bit more noticeable after an author for the Kahiki book Myers I think it was put her foot through the eye area of the statue I should have not told them to go ahead and get on it for pictures. Hey, I guess this makes them the last people to be on top of the old Moai before the tear down.

I joked about how that would bring bad luck to her.

But the two guys who removed the concrete took only a bit over 3 hours to remove the concrete but did start to bust up the top knot it was perfect before that, I should have watched them closer.

But about a month after that Tim Swanky Glasner and his wife Stephany came by for a visit, Tim wrote the book on the Mai Kai and told me about some of the improvements being made to the Mai Kai sounds like it will be even better when they get done.

It was great to see the Glasner's again as Tim was the first TC persons I ever met way back when.

The Mai Kai is not a small tiki bar and we need it to be around for as long as we can keep it around.

I told him I would help in any way that I can as it is the best tiki restaurant/bar we have ever been to!

Eye hole and last time the concrete was on. Top knot damage. Kinda cool to see how it was made my wife thought it would make a cool topiary. Tim and Stephany buy the Moai. IMG_0971 (2)

824 #2309 "RATTAN BASKET LIGHT". (1960s) A variation of the #2309 lamp. The general style of the basket lamps were consistent, although the basket weave itself did vary over time due to availability of the supply. Not electrified.24"x22".VG+.

Did have two of these that I did put lights in them and sold them to Huli Huli the ones I had came from the Kon Tiki in Clevland.

Why make and sell a light that has no light in it weird.

So here is a recipe that I made back when I worked at OSU making that food you hated at the dinning commons. but this one in pretty good and there is a too small batch recipe and a too big batch recipe. We don't like coconut so we leave it out when we make it. AND would be best to make this the day of event as Pineapple can kinda burn the rice if ya know what I mean.

I was able to put lights in them if you want to do that it can be done. And heck the guy I sold them to has them in a semi outdoor local that has them swinging in winds and even some weather blowing in from the sides and they are holding up for now.

Found this little turtle swimming around in our pond the other day, he is cool and we were feeding him even.

But then as we were feeding him one night he thought that eating one of our fish would be a good idea.

Well he soon found out that is the quickest way to get kicked out of that pond so he had to go, we took him to a nearby pond and let him go.

Too bad he was kinda cool, but eating our fish is a no no.

Ok Hamo but best to come in the months of June through August as it might be sunny and even warm. Bring a suit as in pool not business.

So here are a few Kahiki lights I have to work with, don't know why they had or even made lights that have no lights in them.

You can see this in the "light" they just sold in the Oceanic arts auction # 824.

I had two of these I put lights in so they would be lights. I can tell ya after all that work even, I did not get $1,230.00 each for them. Not even close.

These are NOT from the Kahiki but from the Cleveland kon Tiki.

Here are some incandescent light bulbs I often use and just heard the other day these are also going to be fazed out by 2023. This will surly save the world but till that time get all you can I say.

Christmas without C9s I don't even want to live in that world.

"What about LEDs they are so much better", I just don't like em. Might be the stubborn old guy in me or the three to four times the cost of them, maybe it's the blueish cast the regular LED bulbs give out.

"Sure they cost more but they last longer" do they now, I was made to change the sockets and bulbs to LED bulbs on a few lights I sold to a place here and those lights looked fine after ( had to buy the even more costly antique looking LED bulbs) BUT my wife and I went into the place like three months after I sold them those lights and one light was out. And both those bulbs were brand new, heck they even just came out with the antique LEDs.

How could this be those LEDs last forever! AND the guy said he just changed the other LED bulb the day before!

So here is what they may have left out of the tests on these LED bulbs to get the results they wanted. Power outages, when I work at OSU changing light bulbs and then later on the High voltage crew I found that after a power outage the lights would be blown out all over campus.

Working on the High voltage crew later when installing surge arrestors on High voltage switch gears I was told that when you throw the switch on after you fix that power outage a surge of power goes down the power line.

These arrestors would take that surge to ground to save the switch gear. I never did find out if the lights on campus did not blow out as much after a power outage after we put in the surge arrestors, cuz hey I was no longer changing light bulbs and ballasts.

It did help the save the switch gear, and we got less overtime due to blowouts.

You get the same surge with lightning strikes only more so.

Only wish I could live long enough to hear these new whippersnappers gripe when they get rid of LEDs they now like so well for some other new light.

So after you remove the broken ribs you then replace them with new Pieces of rattan seen here.

I saw that post by Jeff in collecting tiki and thought hey cool Jeff is posting and it's not just to promote a new book he is writing or a sale he has or a seminar Hes doing.

Then I see he rips that Detroit tiki book that has a higher five-star rating than his book BTW.

I do know and like Jeff but have seen over the years how he mostly does things for himself, but he always comes out smelling like a rose.

I met Doug Motz once and acted like I did not know who he was, He was so put out, visibly put out. It was so fun to not acknowledge him the way he did not acknowledge so many restaurants here in town.

Thank you for that firsthand account of what you found. I hold the most stock in stuff like that as most times firsthand accounts don't come with an agenda to get you to think one way or the other.

Be skeptical people and don't believe everything you are told people, that's all I ask.

Ok on to some tiki stuff.

Here is a new bar hanger barrel just did. used to find these all the time for like 5-10 bucks. Now they are $20.00 or more when I see them.

Got about ten or more of them they would be great shelf stands.

Just add some rope work and a hook plus a cork and yer done.

Here are some molded resin items I made some time ago.

But what is your take on making a copy of a table lamp from the Kahiki that was from the 60s and the artist if you could find out who made it is most likely dead.

(This is the second version and not the Marcy Sapp one we all knew who made that one)

Made about five of those and sold three? Did let people know it was a copy.

The thing is what do you do about a light you can't find any more and still want that light? you really end up covering the cost of making that light and end up with a few for yourself as any kind of pay off for making that light.

Do try to keep the lights I made mostly things I have come up with but do look at others from the past for ideas.

Have seen on here lights that are just like mine the more original ones I have done over time and one guy who I just asked to see a photo of it as it was in the background and he was all like "I have never even seen any of your lights" this was a long time TCer too that apparently never went to my light thread.

Man it would be nice to at least say I got this idea from.... Do try to give credit when I directly use an idea, and have asked for permission to use others ideas like from a painting but have never used that idea after they said yes I just never got around to it.

What's yer take on that.

Funny you say that I told Mike about your tread here and he said he would check it out, but I also told him that if I showed you how to tie floats like I had just showed him you would be beating me in less than a year.

Wish you did live nearby as we could make lights together.

I did long ago show one person how to tie floats and asked him not to tell anyone he was in a tiki group and that group with him teaching did a seminar at one of their events on how to tie floats right after I showed him.

Plus, a girl he knows well now sells more float lights than I do, I don't think she ties them the same way I do though to be honest.

So, all that killed me wanting to do as many how tos.

You know I was supposed to do an article in the new Tiki Mag on how to tie floats but it never happened kinda think the guy that worked for Amy was not so fond of me at that time is my best guess.

"TikiSkip you know that would never work at a restaurant." Ha! the way Hospitals are run would not work in any business except government that's only because people MUST come to you and must put up with the way they are so poorly managed.

My restaurant had a menu with prices, you knew what you were going to pay, at a hospital you have NO IDEA what kind of outrageous bill is coming.

At my restaurant everybody pays the same for what they got, at a hospital some pay NOTHING and those people many times are the fine citizens that lay around and drink or do drugs all day and have no time for working AND those are the people that know how to get into the ER and many times are just looking for pain killers or a warm place to stay for a night, I talk to other nurse's.

Time after time the day we went to the ER we would watch these people wheeled right into the back and get care right away.

PLUS, it looks like some people don't even have to be citizens at all to get FREE health care just wait till that 6 plus million people get into your ERs over the next two years that does not even include the new babies that will be born here over that time.
