velvet paintings

Hope I'm not stepping on anyones' toes, but a few months back this Perc Miller was
advertised here in Perth and I had contacted the woman who owned it, only for that
contact to be suddenly cut off, I expect a higher offer had been made and she'd taken it.

A long shot, but if the new owner is a visitor to Tiki Central, I would really like to hear from you.

Hi! I'm new to this forum and this place is incredible! I never knew there were so many other fans of velvet paintings. I fell in love with this piece I grabbed from an estate sale this last weekend. However, I have been unable to decipher the signature. I can read "Hawaii" and that led me to this forum. Any help in attributing this haunting painting is greatly appreciated.

Anyone seen this signature before or know of the artist?

Hi anybody have any idea what this would go for? It is by McMahon who was one of 5 students of Leeteg. It was bought in Hawaii in the 60's it is 44'tall and 31' wide, my grandparents had them all over the house. I really remember a giant one in their bedroom of a very pretty hawaiian lady.

I am looking to sell it could anybody help me price it, also has a light that attaches to the top of the frame. Thanks!!

I have one of those. It is about 40 x 29 in the same hand-cut wooden frame (total @ 47 x 36) It came from Minnie's in Modesto CA and shows '59 Tyree on the bottom right. My dad, a frequent visitor and friend of the owner won it in a dice game back in the 60's from the then-owner, I think his name was Hop Louie. Mine is in perfect condition with the original lamp (and cord) still in tact. Too bad you had to cut your cord, it was probably the original one used when the painting was hanging on a restaurant wall.

Oops. I am new to this site and see I replied to a post posted 2007-06-01 3:37 pm from Psycho Tiki D. So whomever read it probably had no idea about what I was addressing. It was the Polynesian semi-nude oil on velvet with the light wood colored frame. I'll get this figured out. Sorry.

Very nice, black velvet nudes in such a dynamic action pose are not that common, most are portraits. It would be even very nice-ER if one could see it right side up and in focus. You have succeeded in figuring out how to post images here, surely that extra step could be achieved also, please? :D

The story of its acquisition is a real Tiki history classic, by the way, akin to Leeteg paying his bar tap with his paintings :) :

I took the picture from my phone on a whim, and in dim light in the house. When my daughter gets back from college next week (Cinema major) I will ask for some help.

the58guy- the dates you supplied are perfectly in line with the history of minnie's. ownership changed in 1960 to the mah family. good ol' hop louie was probably close to moving down south, and probably was having a little too much fun in letting new acquired pieces go during his dice games (considering that was just painted in
'59) it is staggering to think of the treasure trove of tyree paintings that once hung in minnie's modesto over time. we would love to hear of any stories your dad may have shared about minnie's and the owners -- (or pictures perhaps?)

Nice painting. Is there a thread anywhere for restoring/remounting velvet paintings? I searched but could not find one.

I am not aware of any. My painting is in as-new condition and has not been restored.

Sorry, never ment to imply yours was in less than perfect condition. I was asking because I was searching for a restoration thread and came across this one. I have an older velvet painting that is tearing along the nails and wanted to see about remounting it. Thanks.

I have something by F.T. Chung as well (or Cheung?), framed by Man Fong of Hong Kong, in the mid-20th century. It's not velvet though... it seems to be some kind of linen, stretched across the frame and bound. I found it at our local flea market in central NY state in 2008. Did you ever find out more about the artist? I search for the name then and found nothing... until I searched again today and found your post here.

Recently one of our buyers purchased a storage locker that held a velvet art piece by Bill Erwin and I have a lot of difficulty finding any type of contact information for him or his estate. We are hoping to air the piece on national TV and have it appraised. Those paintings are based on a photo by Harrison Marks of Vicky Kennedy / Margaret Nolan.
Speaking of James Bond she was the credits model for Goldfinger and in the movie as well. According to a website photos from that "Four Poster" bed set appeared in Kamera No.66 1965.

Since the only scan of the image the paintings were based on I found online came from playing cards it is probably where the artists got the image as well.

We found the original of the Woman I have been in lust with since around 1970!

The Painting I posted was purchased by my Father back when he was a Swank Divorcee livin the swingin life. I was 13 years old at the time and reading his PlayBoy magazines and dreaming of the day when I would have my turn. When Dad married, the painting was the first thing to go. (Dad gave it to me) Next the Corvette, Then the Dirt Bikes, the Pool Table and me too!

You see, I was whisked off to California against my will without a chance to say goodbye. I called my best friend and told him to take the Velvet Painting as his own. His Mom would not have it in her house and it was stuffed into the back of a closet in 1972. And there it remained until earlier this year when my Best Friend (Same Guy, we've been friends for sometime now) told me he found it. 40 years and Dad's divorce, it is back in my hands again. And at last I know the source!

Of course I knew it was one of those cheap reproductions done in the Velvet Painting Factories of Juarez Mexico and there are probably a thousand or more like it, but I knew there I had seen too much of her to not know there was an original.

I have a question and by the looks of it this is the place to start. Growing up my grandfather had this painting hanging over his desk or 40 years. I'm told he purchased it late one night from a bartender at the Grand Hawaiian where it hung over the bar. He recently passed and I was lucky enough to find it in a storage locker.

My question is, I'd like to have it professionally cleaned, it has year of embedded dust, and the frame is shot, so I'm looking for references of who would be the best person to talk to about this.
