Menehune Juice

So, I've been wanting to make a menehune juice. The times I've been to Vics and ordered it, I thought it was pretty similar to a mai tai. But I figured it couldn't possibly be the same drink. I didn't know where to start with the drink because I figured I'd either be making a mai tai (not that that's a bad thing), or I'd be missing something really subtle, like 1/8 tsp of pernod. A 1980's era United Airlines First Class menu I recently uncovered among my past flight souvenirs, features both Trader Vic's Mai Tais and Trader Vic's Menehune Juice...and according to that, the only difference is White Rum in the Menehune and Dark Rum in the Mai Tai.

There are also these from Trader Vic's own web site that I captured just before they shut down the recipe page a couple of months ago:

The Famous MAI TAI
4 oz. Trader Vic's Mai Tai Mix
2 oz. fine dark rum
juice of 1 fresh lime
Fill a double old fashioned glass with cubed ice and add the ingredients above. Stir well and garnish with fresh mint sprig, pineapple spear, cherry and slice of lime. Substitute 2 oz. of bourbon for the rum, and you've made a HONI HONI.

Menehune Juice
4 oz. Trader Vic's Mai Tai Mix
2 oz. of fine light rum
juice of one lime
Fill a mai tai (double old-fashioned) glass with shaved ice. Add mix and rum, and shake. Decorate with fresh mint, and fresh lime if you wish. (a Menehune is a Hawaiian "leprechaun")

...and the only difference I see there besides the dark/light rums...is cubed ice vs. crushed...and some garnish differences.

But I'm far from an expert in such matters. I usually don't make 'em. I just drink 'em! :wink:

Thanks a million for the info there. That was definitely helpful. I'm making menehune juice tonight! I've even got some menehunes to use for swizzles-- souvenirs from my last Vic's visit.

That's interesting to be sure. When visiting TV's in Scottsdale a few months ago, I had a Mai Tai, and my girlfriend had a Menehune Juice. I drank mine and about half of hers, and never would have guessed that they were basically the same, although I could tell that they were similar (ie, the use of Orgeat). Good to know!

Well, I had a Menehune juice at Trader Vic's in Scottsdale a while back and
was hooked! I found a recipe on the internet that does not resemble the
Mai Tai at all (unless you put a dark rum floater on it, which is good):

Juice of 1 lime
2 oz light rum (I like Cachaca 51)
1/4 oz simple syrup (I like agave nectar better)
1/4 oz Orgeat
(Floater)

Apply the lime juice to a tumbler full of ice (cubes).
Shake remaining ingredients with crushed ice, and pour.

I find that I always need to tweak the measures, especially after I start
serving them ('cause I'm drinking them too)--never seems to be enough of one
thing or another.

This recipe is closest to that first Menehune Juice at Trader Vic's so I
don't see a connection to the Mai Tai.

Incidentally, I was recently in Maui and asked for a Menehune Juice
everywhere I went, figuring that, hey, it's Hawai'i! My girlfriend started
complaining eventually and hiding her face. Nobody knew of it.

Finally we went to Mama's FH one afternoon and I described it to Kevin
the bartender. Just wasn't the same...but there's that tweaking thing again!

Here's a picture of me drinking a Menehune Juice.

I say Menehune Juice no ka oi. Aloha.

I have this adaptation at my bar....
2 oz Cruzan white rum
1/2 oz Cointreau
3/4 oz lime juice (or Simply LimeAde, adds sugar)
1/4 oz orgeat
1/4 oz bar syrup

Shake with ice into a 'ona tiki glass and float a bit of Wray & Nephew over-proof on top.

Huh? I thought a Honi Honi was light rum, lemon, and peach (or is it apricot) brandy.

In actuality, it is today's big thing, which actually makes it yesterday's big thing. Which is fine, because it's vintage.
