I think there's actually 2-3 that i need to track down..

There will be holes in this presentation
as i go thru 6 years of tiki artwork...
and the wheels of progress do move slowly...

After perusing the thousands of folders these past few weeks
categorizing and checking off doubles....
i have found a few stragglers..
including a couple of shots of a lost Moai and his birdmen friends! :)

just to be serious for one uncharacteristic sec., On first inspection, the whimsical content of Kinny's art can belie the amazing and beautiful craft of his art. But it is that dichotomy that makes Kinny's art stand the test of time.

but his hair is another story...it will surely fall out prematurely from all that dye and do fixative!

and i am AMPED!

So.... why landscapes?
How are those Tiki?
well...let's wax philosophical for a minute...
Tikis come from a variety of locales
it's not only palm trees
tho, they do hold a prominent spot in Polypop..
A tiki alone can make for a good painting
but a tiki and a landscape
a world to "live" in
makes for a great painting!
most of the time...

So,in attempts to create a whole world with this Tiki theme
many studies of landscapes and strange locales was required
it's the least one can do for their art....
and sometimes a landscape will inspire a narrative...
or is just as important an element of the narrative...
makes you think..

on that serious note...
here are sketchbook studies of landscapes...
different approaches...serious studies
simplifications
stylizations
philosophicalmations
and all that.

They have been drawing tikis and leaving them on my desk :) One of the Tribe's all-time favorites from you is the octopus-squid-seahorse surfboard... the kids loved it! They also love your 'birdmen'... I forget what you call them, orongo or something like that?

This next batch below are BooBen and Ken collaborations
kind of....
Ben takes his scraps and applies them to the board
however he wants!!!!!!!!

and then it's the challenge of taking these areas that pop off the surface and to integrate them into a design that can be viewed from both the front and side!
like 3-d man!
gotta admire all those sculptors out there
most painters are just used to 2-d

Well anyway, it's like a mental chess game where you both win!

Love the new work, Kinny! My fave is the Village Totem... I woulda bought it at Ben's if I coulda afforded it (and it was such a great price, too!)

Haven't taken a breather yet,but will soon....
i feel a lazy day comin on...
haven't had one of them in a while...

This new painting is my 3rd attempt
to create a satisfactory piece for the
Poly-Blend exhibition
at the Harold Golen gallery next month!
This art show will cover the many aspects of poly-Pop
Cuban/African/etc....
i chose ....Africa!
the Dark Continent beckoned
and after 3 attempts....

Here are some close-ups
just so you can get a feel of the textures
and subtle shadows
and whatnot...

There were 3 masks from 3 different areas used
i tried to remain faithful to the originals
and embellished
or edited each mask
only when necessary...

the drums are my favorite part...
they pop off the surface
and play with your eyes!

Well, that's it for now....
I'll be taking this next six months and working on a one-man show
that will cover ALL subjects and styles of the past 20 years
including,but not exclusively Tiki...
Most of that work i will share on FaceBook
but not here
cause it ain't tiki!
But fear not..
during the dry times
a subject will be chosen
(birds/fish/Lonos,etc.)
and post them all together
in an attempt to display and share
all my Tiki art...
