Mad Dog -

Yeah, the stamps can be just about anything, but I find you have to use a really sticky stain-based color to apply. I know Tapa is supposed to be all original natural-derived inks but I kept getting this creepy feeling when I played around with it that ALL the colors were nautical in their origin. Meaning; tar, india ink, varnish, thick old fashioned dyes, etc., the type of things island traders could waterproof cotton & jute with, and incidentally trade with islanders for food and merch.

I got good results with just boiling down some regular black and red-brown wood stain, and using true india ink where needed. Anyway, it's fun and I'm gonna keep going with it!

MR

Cammo, any word on the prices yet. I'm liking the hats. May have to pick one up.

Hey Matt -

Each one is a different price, talk to me when it's closer to Oasis bro. I'm trying to keep these affordable, but the hat I'm doing now is taking me pretty much 2 full days of work!

Now its called -
"to Seek the Fish, Be the Fish"

C
Cammo posted on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 4:43 PM

Here they are.

The first is a Tapa design that I went way out on. This is all woodblock printed, using natural white, India Ink, and deep brown stains, in a wraparound diagonal. I call it the Melville.

The brim is cool...

And finally, and I mean finally cause this is the last hat I'm making this year, this took a LOT of time!!!! And it was worth it - was going to call it the 'Seek Fish' hat,

But -

I took it over to Buzzy's this morning.

Buzzy took one look at it and said -

"It's the HAT OF TIKI!"

So that's what it is.

It's got everything. Tiki masks printed over with two layers of woodblack printed Tapa designs,

Volcanoes chugging away -

Leaping fish -

Native spearfishermen, with fish in the back of da boat -

Here comes the Tapa prints again -

Natives worshipping at the Alter of Tiki.

That Tapa print brim -

More brim -

And yes of course on top, after all the fishing, Tikis, running away from lava flows, what ya get is a NICE DRINK.

See ya at OASIS!!!!

B

Your da "Cat in the Hat" Cam....It don't get much nicer than this!

Don't forget...you still got's me to go yet (after Oasis is fine with me)...mine has to put the funk into funky...the spark into sparkly...in other words...I want your best game brother.

...doh!

I thought Babs was visiting upper Sri Lanka this week - you in town, bro?

OK, so it's official - and I mean this totally straight, no pun intended,

SVEN HAS THE BIGGEST HEAD!

Of all the people who tried on my hats at Oasis, Sven's was the biggest noggin out there. He tried on my biggest XXL sized hat, and it looked like a little teeny weeny bottle cap sitting on the very top of his head. It was kind of freaky.

By simple sheer weight, pound fer pound, the guy literally has more brains than anybody else on TC.

B

Cammo, I gotta have one of them there hats, they are mighty cool and super Unique. Not sure of the size but probably x-lg, I'll have to measure later today or whenever.
Hope you did well at oasis and I'll probably have to wait for the next batch or two..
Thanks

No prob, Mercedes Benz.

I can do you a custom one with swirly Benz-style designs all over it. Talk to you soon, Oasis is still happening, man.

B

hey Cam, now that Oasis is over, What y'a got fer my head? It is 24" all around or 61 CM so size 7 5/8? that sound right?

C
Cammo posted on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 6:26 AM

Here's the take -

Buzzy got the "Black Sunset"
Babalu - "Tiki Hunter, tan"
Travelling Jonsey - "Tiki Hunter, dark"
Mai Tai - "Tapa Topper"
and
some guy who owns a sailboat got the "Hat of Tiki" to tool around in his boat with, which is as cool a use as I can imagine.

The rest were all grabbed up, I think the first one to go was the diagonal Tapa print one, which was my favorite. I'd see them all bobbing around the Oasis crowd, going somewhere with the owners.

Anyway, everybody wants a custom one, so give me a while to recoup and we'll do it!

Yep I grabbed "Melville" first. You did a great job on the hats. Only two fit my giant head so that helped me narrow down which one to buy.

That's because I am a straight descendent from that line of brain-eating apes ...we-are-De-vo! (..or a well formed Mongoloid?)
Got me one of those Crazy Al mugs, too, because it reminded me of my great grand dad -and our Christmas dinners. :D

It can be a burden, I tell ya, sometimes I just want to get rid of all that weight. In the late 70s, while still in Germany, I designed this logo for a Punk band I put together:

It's a play on a European "Do not litter" logo, where the round ball is the person's head. I photographed the band members in that pose and cut and pasted their heads off to match my version of the logo. An early attempt by myself to promote non-intellectual primitivism, I would say in retrospect. :)

Cammo
Don't know why but did not meet you at Tiki Oasis.
When you are geared back up making hats let me know.
I like the hat with the drink on top and the tikis on the side.
Very Very happening!! Bye the way-what do these bad boys cost
I never asked?

Coming.....

MORE HATS! And the very last of the gold run Oki Doki mugs, a Babalu/Cammo collaboration Yip Drum mug, ironwood hook pendants, and my all time best carvings! Will start posting very soon.

And - the secret word, and new this year, the SECRET PHRASE.

C
Cammo posted on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 3:28 PM

OK, so finally here's the first of my new hats.

These are super-lightweight, made of this woven rattan material, it looks just like the stuff Bamboo Ben nail-guns to the walls of all his bars.

Here's the whole hat, all of these are Large-XL.

... and its hard to see the hand-painted 4 color Cammo/Samoan Tapa designs, so lets look down on it -

And the inner lining is loom woven pineapple-yellow silk, this stuff is SMOOTH.

Again, I'm using my Shellac-O-Brim technology to make it rain and sun resistant, and to perma-roll the front of the brim. Only 4 of these have been made, all have different hatbands, all with different tapa designs, all have Tikis and a Mai Tai incorporated in the design!

BUT - SINCE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR! Here's the deal; there is a secret phrase written on the underside of the brim of all of these hats. You can almost see the phrase in the picture above, but it's just out of camera shot. It's the same phrase on all the hats. No hints. And the very first person who can find out what the phrase is by any means fair or foul (no rules here of any kind) and says it to my face gets the Maui Made Recovered Ironwood Fishhook pendant I'll be wearing. If I'm not wearing the pendant, the hunt is over, somebody already got it. If I'm wearing the pendant, it's still on. That's the contest.

Again, there are no rules. Find the phrase, tell it to me first, and you get the pendant.

I'll be vending at the Tikiland booth, with Buzzy. And no, Buzzy doesn't know the SECRET PHRASE!

More coming!!!!....

Next hats - the Coconut Craniums.

These are made of 100% coconut fiber! So they're dark brown, light, flexible, and rugged up close. Could only get 3 of these, each has a different hatband.

They also look a lot like the hats Derek always draws those little tourist guys wearing who come to Oasis.

You can wear it porkpie-style, or flip the brim for a fedora.

I was just going to ask the ladies to flash me for that special prize discount deal thing.

I hope that one coaster guy shows up this year and messes with your hats so I can threaten to kick his ass and throw him out again! Now that was some Oasis fun!

Buzzy Out!

OK, lets keep this rolling!

Here's the OKI DOKI mugs! These are the very last I have, they're all priced differently, and all are the best of the whole run. I've done a genuine gold glazing on them!

"Frank Gorshin", this is the most complicated glaze job I've ever done; with a seamless line down the middle and a gold pass on the letters, eyes, and 'Frank Gorshin' spelled out on the back.

Anybody know why I called him that?????...

"Eskimo" done in white gold, it pools around the edges of the lettering and makes the thing look like one big ice cube:

"Sunburn", gold-flamed out over bright orange/red. (It's hard to see the flames, you gotta see this in person!) I antiqued the gold on this to make it look exactly like it's from 1963, and by the way, I think this is my favorite Oki mug of all....

And finally, "Volcano Brained" or call him whatever you want - matte stone finish with high-gloss lava spilling out, no gold pass so this guy is cheaper;

Still more stuff to be posted!

M

Because he looks like Frank Gorshin's Star Trek character?

M

Btw, love the mugs!

:tiki: CAMMO'z LIDS ARE TOPS! :tiki:

They are best purchased on the run, during a drive by, down a dark alley, in a seedy neighborhood, behind a porn palace, inside the service entrance, behind the false wall of the coat closet, three knocks and a handslap, tip Rocko a Hamilton$$, sit on the third stool nearest the exit...and "IF" Cammo approves of the sale... a briefcase will appear and the hat will be left on the rack by the door. Tip the bartender, pinch the cigarette girl and hand the doorman the correct fee for the lid, plus 20%... apply the chapeau to yer noggin and leave immediately! DO NOT LOOK BACK!!

That's my insider tip for finding Cam and acquiring one of his AMAZINGLY rare exotic lids! Good Luck and if you see BUZZY... flash him. :)

C

Thanks, folks; Jonsie is now my International Ambassador Of Goodwill and Mugs!

These are the Volcano Series, each are one-of-a-kind, and I tried to break all the rules of mug design. They're carved, for instance. They get small at the top, not big, and they stand on little round bases. And the tops cant at a 45 degree angle, just to look cool. These are extremely organic & experimental, they have no front and back, the glaze is mixed and paint-layered which I don't think anybody has done before, you kind of have to see them up close to see the detail....

...and they feel GREAT in your hand.

"Pele", the other side of this one shows her travelling island to island, as per legend.

And "Pagan Island" which is a real volcanic island, and has the global co-ordinates carved under the name:

More coming...

T

Jeez, these just keep getting better & better!

C
Cammo posted on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 6:33 AM

Also, I did these as an experiment, they didn't sell in the last Christmas Online Art Show, but I still think they're really cool, so I'll discount them and plop them down at Oasis.

This is "Dream of the Fisherman", a hand-painted sushi platter. It's BIG, and in the shape of a fish; the tapa design on the left warms and darkens with aging. It's kind of a cool concept...

And a little 1950's style ashtray to go with it...

C

The Sunburn, Eskimo, and Lava Head guy are all gone, I'll Ebay Mr. Frank Gorshin after Oasis. He's gonna have fun tomorrow, though, I'm taking him to Oasis for some serious fun!

Jeez man, Oasis vending hasn't even technically started yet.

P

i met frank gorshin once, at a performance of a play in vegas. he took me and my date back stage and talked to us for awhile. he was quite gracious and interesting. i'm glad i have that memory.

T

I had a great Frank Gorshin experience, too. It was at a Star Trek convention a year or two before he passed away & we had a wonderful conversation about his incredible career and then he asked me what I did for a living & then he made me feel like I was the one being interviewed. Very engaging and charming. Just the nicest guy you could meet.
