The Tiki Art of Anthony Carpenter-Art show poster P.12

Pages: 1 2 3 4 180 replies

Greetings,

I am fairly new to the Tiki art scene. I am a Freelance Illustrator based in Michigan (no Tikis here!) and I have dabbled in several categories of art including: Comics, Children's Educational Books, Role Playing Game Art, Pin-Ups, Fine Art, Coloring Books, etc.
A few years back I stumbled onto the Low brow art scene via Juxtapoz magazine and the world of Tiki soon followed.

Lately, I have been browsing around Tiki Central, checking out all of the amazing art, while trying to work up the courage to post some of my own.

The following images are graphite with digital color:

Mystiki

Tiki

Sunset Tiki

These pieces are available as prints from my gallery at Imagekind.com.
Here is the link for anyone interested: http://anthonycarpenter.imagekind.com/Illustrationville

I'll get some of my sketches scanned for the next post.
Until then, thanks for looking! :)

Really nice work, welcome to TC :D

Love them all, mystiki for the intrigue and atmosphere, les girls for the perfect simplicity, the eye-robotfor just being cool. Sweet :D

Fantasic art Artosaurus!! But " no tiki here " I live in MI. also, check out the locating tiki page. Tiki my be closer than you think. I just found a classic lounge that may interest you.

Welcome to TC....very nice...thanks for letting us know about the prints. :)

Just bought print of Sunset & Mystiki.

FATIMA BLUSH: Oh, how reckless of me. I made you all wet.
JAMES BOND: Yes, but my martini is still dry.

[ Edited by: VampiressRN 2007-11-11 08:05 ]

Thanks for the warm welcome.:D

Tiki Shark : Thanks! I'm a big fan of your work as well. Your in-progress posts are great. Graphic Novel, eh? Hmmm, that's an idea I may have to explore. :)

hewey : Thanks! The Les Girls image was actually a piece from my sketchbook. It was a serendipitous composition. I scanned the page, got rid of the extraneous sketches and added the colored blocks and text. One of the nice things about sketchbooks is that often relationships between disparate images will occur on their own.

uncle trav: Thanks! A Tiki lounge in/near K-zoo? Who'd a thunk it? I live in GR and there is nothing here. Thanks for the heads up about the Locating Tiki page. I'll have to check it out.

VampiressRN : Thank you very much! You are my first sale on the site. Please let me know how things go. If there is anything you find unsatisfactory, give me a shout.

Here are a couple of sketches that I enhanced with Photoshop for my sketch-blog:

The Tiki and the Girl

Bingo Bango Bongo!

Question: What are the rules regarding nudity here? I have a couple of pieces that I'd like to share, but I don't want to offend anyone.

Another guy from Michigan. The quantity isn't here but the quality in all the TCers who are from Michigan is high. Been really liking everyones Hula girls w/ tiki that have been popping up. I hope to do one, one of these days. Great work and a big welcome

Very Cool work Anthony!
I especially dig on the vintagey ones..they have a feeling like
those old GI pinup/comics mags back in the day!
As for nudity-don't think it's a problem...throw a warning in your title...
Great art man! Let's see some more!
Welcome to TC! :D

Love the sketches, especially the girl with the vintage hair :D :D Great whimsical

As far as nudity, I'd suggest just post the link to the image in your post, with a note saying it's a nudie. That way people can decide if they want to view it or not. The problem with a note in the title is that in 6 months time (with a different title) someone might go through the whole thread and get no warning to the pics... It also depends on how 'naughty' it is', like some of Coop's girls show everything and are basically pornagrphic, but a vintage topless hula girl should be fine.

teaKEY : Thanks.

Little lost tiki : Thanks. It's amazing what a little sepia tone will do to an image. :)

hewey : Thanks. The images I was thinking of are pretty tame. Mostly topless . . . nothing pornographic. I'll add some links in my next post.

Here is an image from a gallery show I was a part of late last year. The show was a four man affair with fellow comic book/fantasy artists Jack Snider, Scott Rosema and Mike Mason. My portion of the show was based on an amalgam of Pulp art, B-movies, Serials and Men's Adventure Magazines. This was the only Tiki image.

Curse of the Tiki Cult

I also have some in progress scans of this one, if anyone is interested.

Yes! Beautiful drawing - the composition, tone and lighting are all spot-on. Post the others too!

Thanks, Paipo. Here they are.
Top left: Thumbnail sketch
Top right: The initial drawing on smooth-finish bristol
Bottom left: Outlining forms and filling in tones
Bottom right: Nearly there

More work from the show can be seen here: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=40469

As promised, here are some links to pieces that contain nudity and are NSFW.

This one was created as a commission and was featured in the Reader Art section of Juxtapoz.com.
Night of the Tiki: http://tinyurl.com/2xq4oy

This was also a commission. This time of Frank Cho's character, Brandy, from Liberty Meadows. When a client gives me free reign
on an image, I usually end up adding Tikis or some other retro elements.
Brandy's Tiki Lounge: http://tinyurl.com/2g4e6f

I have been creating Pin-Up art and auctioning the work on eBay. As a big fan of 60's sexploitation movies (I have a large collection
from Something Weird Video), I recently stumbled upon the idea of creating my own movie poster images and paperback book covers.
This one is called "The Mutant Sex Fiend of Tiki Island": http://tinyurl.com/2fspb8

This was created for an eBay auction.

Thanks for looking. :)

OMG!
Artosaurus - you are a reeeeeeaaaalllll good drawer!
That's it! I'm doing a GROG and throwing away all my art supplies!

AWESOME STUFF!! GROG like.

Some of your sci-fi art has a real Virgil Finlay/Frank Kelly Freas feel to it. Excellent stuff.

You ARE are a REEEEAAL good drawer, like Tikishark said.

GROG give two semi-opposable thumbs up.

Yeah The stuff up for sale on the comic art site have a very Virgil Finlay feel!

The drawing of the couple at the lake facing off the aliens - and the guy has a retro lookin' Aloha shirt on!

Okay, someone needs to wirte a pulp action "tiki island adventure" novel that all those beeeeeutiful jungle adventure pencil drawings could illustrate! (Please!)

Keep up tha amazing work!

C

Very nice artosaurus!! congrats!!

Holy Wow Gee. Terriffic stuff Anthony. Thanks for posting the thumbnails and roughs too.

ch

Cool stuff Anthony, I really like the graphite drawings and the mixed media digital piece is extra special. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful work! Lovin' the chicas.

Really nice work! I like the way you draw very much!!!

Hiphipahula! Excellent! I could dig it :D I would love to own some Anthony Carpenter art..amazing

H

Excellent drawings.

Tiki Shark: Thanks! If someone does write that "Tiki Island Adventure" novel, I will happily illustrate it. :)

Grog: Thanks! That was the feeling I was going for with these. It's hard to beat those classic pulp magazine illustrations.

I actually met Frank Kelly Freas once. I was one of the quarterly winners of the Illustrators of the Future contest for Bridge Publications (They put out all of the L. Ron Hubbard material). They flew me out to Los Angeles for the award ceremony and Scientology Indoctrination Clinic ( I kid . . . sort of). Mr. Freas was one of the jurors for the contest and was on hand at the awards dinner. Also on hand were legendary editor, Julius Schwartz, and the woman who voices Bart Simpson (I forget her name). There was a tour of the LRH Museum and a converted Hollywood hotel that turns out brand new Scientologists on a regular basis. All in all, it was one of the weirder experiences of my life.

Clarita, cheeky half, Swamp Fire, Blowfish, hiphipahula, hiltiki: Thanks to you all!

Here's a color sketch for a future painting. I'm trying to put together ideas for a gallery show with my friend and fellow arteest, jack Snider. The theme is Space, but I couldn't help slipping in some Tiki anyway. :)

Invasion of the Tiki Snatchers:

I also started a new blog called Skinsville, which is home to my NSFW sketches. Included is the original thumbnail sketch for my Night of the Tiki commission. Here's the link: http://skinsville.blogspot.com/

As I type this, I am listening to an MP3 of The Fantastic Strings of Felix Slatkin: Hawaiian Paradise. It's bringing a little tropical warmth to this chilly Michigan evening. :)

Really nice work, such a great whimsical and retro vibe in your work, and the lighting is perfect. Sweeeet! :D :D

Thanks, hewey. :)

Here are three random sketchbook Tikis:

I call this post, "Unfinished Business".

Here are a few projects that I hope to find
the time to finish in the New Year.

First up is an 18" x 0.6" x 5.3" Tiki sign:

Next up is a Tiki frame:

and finally, an 11" x 14" painting on canvas board:

Enjoy the Holidays everyone!! :)

Killer style artosaurus! Awesome!

Thanks, suburbanpagan.

Here is a sketchbook piece:

And here is the same piece with color and type added:

I'm hoping to get an opportunity to do a more finished
version of this one (with a different color scheme and a
few changes to the composition) in the near future.

Very Very Very cool sketches.....Your pinup style hula girls totally rock...let's see more!!!

Really nice work mate, I love your style :D

yeah ha, like your style!!

Cool!
But, what IS she looking at? And what is the Tiki looking at also, I guess?

Autosaurus, you have amazing style. I'm very impressed, big fan of everything you posted in here.

hewey, ramba-zamba, Flat Black: Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. :)

Tiki Shark: Thanks! I have no idea what she is looking at. Whatever it is, she seems fairly pleased by it.
I like to add an "air of mystery" to some of these things. It allows the viewer to fill in the blanks for him/herself.

Here's a new oddity. An exotica themed vintage album cover:

Here is a new commission piece featuring a couple of DC Comics characters.

Big Barda is preparing for a dip in a tropical lagoon when Gorilla Grodd rushes
in and steals her stuff. That Grodd is one naughty ape. :)

Anyhoo, the gent who commissioned this piece was good enough to allow me to
keep things tikified. That made it much more fun to draw.

Luvin the work! Your style is really fun to look at!

[ Edited by: Blowfish 2008-03-17 19:28 ]

So, seeing that is DC, I had to look the characters up.

So Grodd is a super intelligent ape that can telepathically control weaker minds.

That is pretty much the coolest comic character I've heard of.

G
GROG posted on Tue, Mar 18, 2008 9:53 AM

Nice!!

Apparently Grodd is a bit of a perv as well stealing the ladies clothes. Great stuff you have going on over here, I really like the detail and style.

Perv? Well is still an ape.

Thanks, everyone. :)

And now, here are the sketches that I promised Brad I would post.

Backstory:
A short while ago, I was perusing an issue of Cinema Retro magazine which contained several articles
on cool spy flicks including the "Man from U.N.C.L.E." movies and "Deadlier than the Male" featuring
Bulldog Drummond. It also featured a number of reproductions of nifty poster art for said flicks.
I followed that up with the DVD of "Casino Royale" (Niven, not Craig) and an island themed episode
of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". I was fairly saturated in 60's imagery.
Needless to say, this got the old creative juices flowing and I started sketching some jazz of my own.
It was during that time that I decided to check in with TC. To my surprise, the talented Mr. Parker had
just posted the pencil sketches for his first amazing Tiki Noir print. :o
It seems we were thinking along the same lines! Quite the happy co-inky-dink, don'tcha think? :)

Anyhoo, enough of the jibba jabba. On with the art:

More to come . . .
