Bamboo Ben comic for Tiki magazine. Oldest comics at top, latest at bottom.

The drawings are extra crappy in this one.

GROG hate drawing caricatures. Drawing caricatures of other artists in THEIR style---extra challenging.

This isn't TIKI, but you might enjoy this.

Back in the 90's, GROG' friend Markus Rothkranz was developing a live-action TV show called ATOMIC CITY http://www.atomiccity.tv/. He wanted the show to have a "retro-futuristic look" like the Jetsons. He also wanted some retro-style animation for the credits and between some scene/location transitions. He wanted a look,"Something similar to SHAG".He ask GROG to do some developmental artwork to help pitch the show. He was shooting some scenes to help sell the look of the show and GROG had some images from the rough cuts to work from, but they didn't have the final CGI settings, so GROG have to make something up. This was only experimental pre-production artwork and was never meant to be aired, and GROG not get paid for it. GROG do artwork as a favor for a friend.

This was fun and challenging, because GROG never draw in a retro-cartoony style before. So, these are GROG' experimental illustrations for the show:

(Black outline around the character)

(Colored outlines around the character)This pose and drawing style GROG based on awesome animation art by Lynn Naylor.

Markus said he wanted something similar to SHAG, so GROG use some SHAG elements, like the console. This was the 1st illustration of the batch experimenting in this style.(No outline around the characters)

(Thick, colored outlines around the characters, with smaller detail lines within)

All live action images are from Markus' website: http://www.atomiccity.tv/

Later on we find this guy DEREK YANIGER on the internet who was doing beautiful artwork exactly like we were looking for, and GROG sent a link to his website to Markus, and voila DEREK was our man.
So, if this baby DOES ever get picked up, you'll get to see Derek Yaniger art animated.

the thick outline /thin details inside Dr. Cosmo are great
works with the colors great for that style!

WOAH!!! Grog, really incredible stuff! I'm glad you included some of your TC photoshop madness, those things are hilarious!

I love the drawings of the moai, like an an animation character style sheet with all the various poses... would be awesome to see those drawings come to life as actual animation!

Thanks guys. That was the first illustration of the batch, and GROG not really consider it finished, because GROG was going to put a chair behind the guy at the console---he's kind of just floating right now.

Yeah Tobunga, the TC Photoshop madness was fun to do. GROG glad you were entertained by it. GROG just self-taught in Photoshop. If GROG knew it better, then GROG would be REALLY dangerous.
And GROG glad you like the little animated Moais, Tobunga. They were just little scribbles GROG would do at the end of the day before GROG go home from work, or when GROG have a little downtime waiting to meet with GROG' director for scene assignments. GROG have no plans to animate them right now, but who knows, maybe sometime down the line there will be some opportunity to use them for some project. Since Moais are emotionless, inanimate objects GROG thought it would be fun to portray them very animated and showing lots of emotion.

Awesome stuff Ernie, just love your eclectic style, great sense of humor and prolific talent. Its fun to see such diversity all in one thread.
You are a truly inspiring artist, as are so many here on TC! Looking forward to the next decade of work from you!

Hopefully all this encouragement
will help to UN-LAZY-FY Grog
and he will make MORE art in the future...

More Art...

The Photoshoppe fliers take time, effort, skill and talent, too LLT.

Besides, they have the magic UNDO button when you screw up. :)

H

Creativity is number one for me as far as photoshoppe fliers go and Grog certainly has a lot of that and more. :)

Hi GROG. I like your drawings. Maybe you can draw a portrait of Kiki one day? I'll pay you in chicken and dumplings.

G
GROG posted on Wed, Mar 3, 2010 12:23 AM

GROG HATE doing portraits more than caricatures.

Poartrait= $10,000 minimum. (Plus chicken and dumplings)

L

This is what $10,000 can get ya!

Although I have never been so skinny so it was worth it!

hmmmm....
that drawing of GROG's looks a LOT like
the two he sold BigToe and I.....
but we only paid $5000 apiece...
call me crazy, but here they are.....

i smell a scam....

G
GROG posted on Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:34 AM

You and Big Toe got ripped off by some copycat artist Kinny. GROG would have drawn Kinny MUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuch fatter!

i only paid him on the condition that he made me thinner in the picture...
You should hire him!
he could draw you with hair!
:)

C

Oh GROG isn't so lazy after all, cool mugs and illustrations, congrats!
