Hey, I'd pay to see Pink Floyd at a tiki venue!

Here is an article about the Samoan tradition of boys raised to be girls.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1789586/Fa'afafine:-The-boys-raised-to-be-girls

Cheeky Tiki mug made for the Mahiki and Kanaloa called fafanine. So now there is a tiki connection!

J

Nothing personal against the artist, but that mug is UGLY !!

I can say that on my own thread. :D

J

Anyway on to the Enchanted Tiki Room. So did you know?…

  1. That the ETR was originally supposed to be a restaurant?… I didn't.

  2. That the ETR was the first air-conditioned attraction at D-Land?… Not me.

  3. That when the corporate Disney heads wanted to turn the ETR into a "Lion King" attraction, the contracted imagineers threw a monkey wrench into that "bright" idea by designing something that was deemed unfeasible?… Nope.

  4. That Disney realized what a cash cow they had during the ETR's 45th Anniversary when unanticipated crowds stormed the park to purchase the expensive commemorative swag?… News to me.

  5. That the ETR is the most awesome historical Tiki time machine experience up there with the Mai Kai and Hala Kahiki?… Yes, it's TRUE !!

Thanks Tangaroa-Ru, the "Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" song has filled the emptiness of my soul and made me a better Tiki citizen !! :)

I wanna go back. Can someone spot me a C-Note ?? :D

EDITED - Thanks BTD !!

  1. Yes I did, but I'm a recovering Disney-phile.

4.I believe you mean the 45th anniversary.
Posts on TC talked about people standing in the heat on Main Street
To buy stuff.
The recent sale , 50 th anniversary was at a separate pay to attend/buy swag event,
At the Disneyland hotel.

Welcome to Tiki Central! You haven't officially joined until you've been pissed on by ATP or your spelling has been corrected by GROG, and now you've had both. :) If you've survived either, or both of these initiation rites, then you've shown enough grit to survive around here. Or, you can just go join Facebook like most of the namby pambys :( who no longer post on Tiki Central.

GROG would have to quit Tiki Central and join the Namby Pambys on Facebook. Can't think of a much worse thing to have to do.

GROG blame John-O for not administering to his thread. Not sure what this thread is anymore. The first post has something to do about drinking Zombies at a bunch of different places, and it's latest derail had to do with something about Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, so who knows where it's going now. GROG vote move to Bilge.

Ahem, excuse me, tikimen, (clears throat)...
I happen to have a zombie in my hand as I type this (and I feel like a zombie as I'm at the end of writing my last bunch of Tiki Magazine stories), so I like to think that kind of helps inch this fine thread back toward whence it came.

However, since John-O mentioned me twice in this thread, I'd like to respond to the ETR portion, as it means something to me. Here goes:

John-O,
I'll happily escort you back through Disneyland anytime you want to go and regale you with more nerdisms and tales of Imagineering. Dole Whip on me. And I pride myself on being a Disney Nerd (aka: "smart", thank you!), since I'm a big believer in the quote "The ultimate fan transcends fandom and does it himself" (Clem Burke, drummer for Blondie, one of my rock idols) -- which is why I used to drive 104 miles roundtrip to work there everyday (way back, when gas was less expensive). I did that just to find out how Disneyland really works and what makes it so special. But, nerd, though I am, I actually have very little Disney memorabilia in my house, because it's all in my brain. Yeah, I could go on about this, but I won't here, because I respect the TC code of... whatever.

Hope to see you all at Tiki Oasis!

Con Mucho Aloha,
Kari

See, it took a real lady to get this thread back on track
I even think Kari, you may have melted my "Grinch Armour" just a little bit
just a little bit......

Joe Banks, I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to use a deceptive alias rather than post under your regular user name. This clearly is in violation of Tiki Central stated policy. :(

In all honesty, such seemingly creepy behavior does not bode well for one seeking a successful career in Tiki journalism. I humbly encourage you to step up your game.

Anyway let's leave that baggage behind and start off on a fresh page. Back to the Zombies (and Chop Suey)...

Well as noted by nui' umi' umi who I was drinking with, this isn't so much a destination Tiki bar as it is a "Beach bar" with Tiki accouterments. The targeted clientele is the Hermosa Beach locals crowd, not BOT-thumping Tikiphiles. I would wager that the cocktail of choice would skew towards Red Bull & Vodka rather than a classic 1934 Zombie mixed with premium rums.

Walking up the steps I was swept with a feeling of Deju Vu, I had been to this place before. I realized this was the former location of the wildly popular California Beach Sushi, a place that I used to frequent occasionally in the 1990's. That place was GREAT for mindless drunken Hermosa Beach fun...

"Hey Bro, ya wanna 'nother round of Sake Bombs."
"Bitchin', this Rainbow Roll is most excellent."
"Domo Arigato, dude !!"

Even though the place was completely devoid of customers (the official opening being a week away), THAT beach party vibe still lingered in the air. And actually California Beach was a couple of businesses ago, the site had gone through several incarnations over the last 20 years.

The bar did have some cool bamboo weaving but for the most part the Tikis were Indonesian-carved pineapple heads, i.e. what the Bigbro would refer to as "hacked wood".

Ya know though, they did fit in perfectly with the "brotard" atmosphere that is Hermosa Beach (aka the "Jersey Shore" of the South Bay). Haha.

I don't want to appear too negative here, this place will probably be tons of FUN, you just need to lower your Poly-Pop expectations, leave the Tiki "white gloves" at home, and show up with a sense of humor.

So how was my Zombie? Well it wasn't a 1934's version, maybe more like the 1950's version. They did pour the 151, albeit Bacardi. It did have a pleasant fruity taste, but might be a little on the sweet side for those preferring a more balanced cocktail. I would however order this over a Bud Light or PBR any day.

Next we ordered some Navy Grogs. The manager said this was the first time they tried mixing them, and was honest that they didn't seem quite right. I had to agree, they were more cinnamony than grapefruity tart. They affably switched them out for a couple of Primos.

Noting our Aloha wear, the staff commented that we appeared to "know our stuff". They eagerly asked us for suggestions, we in turn named dropped Tiki Central, the BOT, and Beachbum Berry's mixology bibles.

I'll be back... (Dude !!) :)

Coming up next, urban archeology in Oxnard...

So how was my Zombie? Well it wasn't a 1934's version, maybe more like the 1950's version.

Great, you make it out there yet? We're wondering if what you uncover is going to be true to the 1929 version they started with, or more like the 1970's version. Or...?

The field agent is working the case.

I'm like Napoleon Solo to your U.N.C.L.E Section IV (which suspiciously looks like the Bamboo Inn)...

"Open Channel D" for Cocktails & debriefing, John-O!

Spy camera intelligence photo reveals Napoleon Solo (aka JOHN-O, etc) working the field incognito by use of non-tiki drink...

Eagerly awaiting next field report!!

Sad sad sad
