Thank all of you for the emails! I've got quite a few responses from the Japanese show (Episode 4)! I guess that really stuck a chord with you guys. I'm off to Florida for Hukilau. I Episode 5 will be a Hukilau feature!!! Stay tuned!

Just got back from Maui and these podcasts provided the soundtrack for the trip. I listened to them all while sipping Mai Tais by the pool/beach. Great production, great interviews and great music. Couldn't have put together a better playlist if I tried. Keep it up and THANK YOU!

Episode 5 is up and running folks! This is a special Hukilau 2008 edition with interviews, music from the performers and TONS of photos. You're gonna wanna be sure to view the cover artwork in iTunes when you play this one. There are even some killer blueprint details of the Mai-Kai and Mai-Kais that were planned but never built!!!! Enjoy

PODCAST 5 Is amazing! Very well done. Loved the sets, loved the music, loved the interviews, and the news (!) - and photos! Great job! Best one yet!

(I can't believe I missed the Tiki Yaki O playing at the Mai Kai!)

R U doing a Tiki Oasis Podcast, I hope?!?!?

D
Digitiki posted on 07/21/2008

Thanks Tiki Shark! I'm hoping to do an Oasis podcast too. If not, I'm at least hoping to get some interviews of people for future episodes.

Awesome !

Man, I miss the Mai Kai.

Ditto. I wish I could be at the Mai Kai every day! I'd be broke, but I'd be happy!

Digitiki, this really was an excellent episode. Hearing it start out with "We're goin' to Hukilau" over the broadcast voice of the flight attendant was so exciting - it really captures the feeling I have on the plane when I'm headed to Ft. Lauderdale! :D The episode has great tunes, great photos, great history, and is a wonderful representation of what the Hukilau is. It makes me all the more glad that we haven't lost this incredible treasure of an event and our Mecca, the Mai Kai!

If any of you haven't subscribed to this podcast yet, do it NOW. You will love it.

Thanks Quiet Village (love the name) & Sasquatch (love that name too!!) I'm glad you like the podcast. I actually was considering doing a full on Oasis podcast too, but the Hukilau episode took so darn long to put together and I was actually helping out with the vending coordinating at this year's Oasis, so I didn't get to record as much as I really would have liked. So I'm not sure if I'll be able to do an Oasis episode. However, I do have some really cool stuff coming up including an interview with Robb Hamel (the awesome velvet painter) and some other cool interviewees lined up in the near future!

Episode 7 up and running as of last night. This is an episode I call "Futurexotica" as it focuses on modern exotica and tunes that could be considered as modern exotica or could fit in a set list back to back with traditional exotica. Its a slight departure from the vintage tunes I usually program, but I hope everyone will enjoy it.

I think you should try and get Marty Lush to do a little Booze related segment in your podcasts. You'd probably have to do it from the bar, cos' that's where he lives. Maybe some drink tips, recipes, or some other booze related tid bits....and of course, a classic one-liner or 2.

I know him, so I might be able to hook it up

You know, I love the Quiet Village podcasts quite a bit..but I never made the Marty Lush connection until the Squid/TO show at Kona 2 weeks ago. I'm a little slow on the uptake I guess. I guess that explains how the Quiet Village got "Bachelor No. 2" before anyone else did :D

Really enjoyed the last two shows alot. Wonderful stuff! I would respectfully request they you mix in some "new" exotica in every show. I love the classic exotica, but I'm always hunting for new exotica music, and your hunting seems much better than mine! Thanks for a great show - it's perfect to listen to while I paint - (even on regular canvas).

Mahalo plenty!

Great Stuff!

I'm absolutely loving these shows.

I've noticed you almost seem apologetic when you have a lot of talking, don't be, you're a great interviewer, and I'd subscribe even if your show was just interviews in the Tiki community!

If you feel your show should be more strictly music related, than just have two podcasts!!! But seriously, I think that last episode with the Robb Hamel interview was outstanding, it was a great mix of music, and interview.

Granite--Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you don't mine me rambling on. Its just that I get these play lists together and I have all these great tunes that I want to sqeeze in and then I realize how short an hour really is.

I've got a few really exciting interviews lined up and I hope they pan out.

Thank you for listening!! keep those ideas comin'!

Okay, now you got me listening to modern music and wondering if it's really exotica music that's evolved beyond what we thought exotica was. Like, this may be crazy, but I swear that the new Nine Inch Nails has some strange exotica feeling to it. Industrial Exotica? You listen and tell me I'm crazy. Listen to NIN Ghosts tracks 6, 15, 17, 21.

Dear Digitiki~
I've heard the story about Arthur Lyman's album "Taboo 2": That it was recorded in Honolulu after hours in the Kaiser Aluminum Dome night club. Sometimes recording went all night. So, when the morning sun hits the dome at sunrise the dome heats and expands and makes noise. These noises are reputed to be on two of the tracks on Taboo 2. I have this album on CD, and I can't find these mysterious noises.

Can you talk about this on your program and point out the dome sounds?

Love da podcast.
Aloha -
B~

Tiki Shark,
Yes, I have heard that story and I'm sure it is true. Another thing was that Jeff Chenault told me that they often recorded all night and into the morning hours and that on one recording (he didn't say which one) you can hear a large delivery truck go by. I also remember hearing what sounded like boxes being unloaded or dropped on the floor, almost as if there was a delivery going on at the Hilton. That may have been the sound you were talking about. Either way, yes that would make an interesting side thing. I will have to do some critical listening to my Lyman recording to find some and do a segment on that.

Also, if anyone knows of specific tunes that these "outside" sounds are heard, please let me know!!!!

Another very enjoyable podcast filled with outstanding music-thank you. Hopefully interest in Les Baxter's music, helped kept alive by Keith Pawlak, The Quiet Village and others might result in a release of more Les Baxter music on cd similar to what we saw with Arthur Lyman.
I have the audacity of hope...:D
