ELLINGTON CUSTOM SURFBOARDS

Oddly enough, Mission Beach native Jim Ellington's shaping career began in 1975 on the North Shore in Tom Parrish & Steve Cranston's now legendary Lightning Bolt Surfboard shop. From the the age of seventeen he talked story with Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, Mark Richards, Ian Cairns and more of the era's greatest surfers. All day long jim would listen to the best surfers of the era explain what they liked or didn't like about the boards they were currantly riding.

Jim would shape his own experimental prototypes based on their tough requirements and test them down on his local break at Log Cabin; mere steps away from Off The Walls and Pipeline.

Since then Jim's shaped over 15,000 surfboards, His early line of JET's (Jim Ellington Team Surfboards) are so cal collectables and his current retro fin designs are meticulously refined to fit any surfers needs with a commitment to high performance.

Jim Ellinton enjoys working with individual surfers with specific requirements to create one of a kind custom surfboards.

Back from FLA where I met w/ some talented carvers and weavers from Andros Island as well as other fun craftspeople. I'll post some pics ASAP.

Aloha all.

As I promised/threatened at the end of '08 I'll be peppering into this thread artwork from beyond the pacific rim that you might enjoy including in your home bar. (GASP!)

Try to remember that the godfathers of tiki really couldn't have cared less if the tikis with which they decorated their restaurants and hotels were actually by indigenous native carvers or some WASP in orange county. The overall effect of transportative otherworldlyness was, in my opinion their ultimate goal.

You might explore evidence of this in photos featuring Chinese tiles, decorative Japanese sake urns and net floats or wicker furnishings from Asia Minor and the Carribean featured in the Book of Tiki. The general materials used to construct these artificial atmospheres were also of suspiciously non-Polynesian origin. I believe we can all agree there's a severe lack of African Benin, German Walnut and English Brown Oak in the Pacific and of course Donn Beach had no aversion to the Carribean even employing maps of the rum islands in his restaurants. You like rum. (I'm just trying to help connect the dots for you.)

Anyhooo... By now purists have gone off to look at some pretty tapa on another thread leaving us, the fearless, to continue our journey into the heart of the Carribean...

The artisans of Andros Island...

This is Henry, my tokayo and a startlingly acurate carver with hatchet!

Lead us on the journey, Cap'n! We, the fringe, are ready for exploration outside the "purist" envelope. I shall enjoy some pretty tapa whilst awaiting the word to "shove off!"....

H

Sorry to keep ya waitin' Squiddly my old chum.

A little more info on the artisans of Andros Island...

Discovered by the Spanish in the mid 1500's, La Isla del Espirito Santo was home to Arawak natives until British colonization in 1629. Nassau archives show the island mapped as San Andreas in 1782, most likely due to a settlement of Brits and their African Slaves from San Andreas off the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua. Proximity to trade shipping lanes and the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere made Andros a an ideal pirate port for the likes of famed buccaneer Henry Morgan. The evolution to Andros may be due to successful Greek sponge traders who likened it's terrain and sweet water to a beautiful Grecian island named for Andros, son of Apollo.

Americans who sided with Britain during the Revolutionary war were granted asylum there and resettled bringing more African slaves from Florida, SC, Virginia and Georgia to establishing plantations. Even before Abolition the British Navy would "Deposit" liberated slaves on the Island. Dwelling in huts of driftwood and thatch, settlements with names like Congo Town developed into centers for hybrid culture and art.

The beauty and seclusion of Andros east coast Fresh Creek even lured Rat Packers to this unspoiled Bahamanian hideaway during the sixties where I believe Sammy Davis actually owned a villa overlooking Young Sound.

Today inhabitants enjoy art as a natural part of everyday life much like the people of Thailand and Carving, Batik and watertight baskets woven from Agave Sisal are just as important to natives income as their generational skills as seafarers, bone-fish anglers and lobster/ conch divers.

Enough with the history lesson. I hope to offer sculpture and textiles from Andros this summer. For the moment lets check out Henry's carving and some expert Sisal weaving... Oh, Sisal can also be made into beautiful jewelry.

Mission Beach @ it's best...

Did you kiddies think we had gone the way of Solai Bamboo? Fat Chance!
Just needed a little break to remind myself that the world is full of positive energy and beautiful people.

Witness the dramatic return of The Reverend Captain Dread Pirate Murf: AKA "Our Man in the Pacific". Here to get his sailboat ship shape before the long Heyerdahlian voyage west. For now it's Cook Island mask time!

I'm finally ready to offer up the original four masks from our 2008 Tiki Tutorial Program...

TUTORIAL # 1

We begin with a traditional Marq featuring a beveled bottom perfect for wall display. 2ft tall- $80

Show us your Andros batik.

Edit - PS missed you at the Chop.

H

Tutorial # 2

This mask was nicknamed early on "The Bilko Hijack Mask" in reference to it's two main design influences, an homage if you will to Bosko Hrnjak and Billy the Crud. Bosko got a kick out of it and i'm hoping Billy will too.

Mexican fan Palm about 2ft - $80

Artists for this piece include HodadHank, Anakonia, Little Mandy and my even littler nephew Ogy.

H

Tutorial # 3

This time a nice Hawaiian Traditional from a design by ETR. It's flat bottom allows for table top or wall display.

Mexican fan palm - $80

Artists for this piece include Hodad Hank, Erik the Red and Anakonia.

H

Tutorial # 4

"The MEZO-MARQ"

You tell us.

Is it...

A whimsical missing link between Inca, Maya, Olmec and the island imagery of their decendants on the Marquesas, Raivaevae and Rapa Nui...

OR

A whimsical helmeted space traveler rising from a launch platform atop fire and swirling smoke bound for a voyage across the sea of night?

Either way this mixed media effigy features faux jade inlays as well as golden toothed skulls and mysterious golden glyphs recreated from authentic Yucatan stelae. Glyphs depict an aboriginal American seafarer, a jaguar & seagull and bejeweled skull.

Can stand upright or hang on a wall.

Mexican Fan Palm, mixed media 2ft - SOLD

Artists for this piece include Erik The Red & Hodad Hank.

My next trip down we shall definately have to discuss it over a virgin mai tai or two. Can you work a cash register and make proper change? BTW one of my new years resolutions along with giving up anger and cigars was to carve every single scrap of wood you sent me last year by new years eve 2010. Here's the start along with some of those action shots you dig. Ben, you are a Master and I merely a disciple. My students, in turn, are yours, and I pass along whatever knowledge you have shared with enduring gratitude. Mahalo nui loa.

This little fella's going to England...

A nice chunk of Benz Koa should make a cute hybrid Tang/Marq paperweight!

My only three shipwreck teak Hawaiians w/ the two new Tangs (Fret not FreddieBallsomic, that biggest Hawaiian still has your name on it. I only just found and finished him!)

Anakonia & R.C.D.P. Murf

Anakonia's Aloha mask

Surfboard guru Jim Ellinton try's his shaping skills on some mysterious "stinkwood". Have no idea what "stinkwood" is or why it smells so bad when freshly cut, but if trimmers drop 'em we'll carve 'em!

More mystery wood.

Anakonia begins a giant Hawaiian fork and knife. She's also a great Hula dancer. catch her next Hula Show, St Patty’s Day Eve, Monday 6pm, March 16th @ Kaisen Sushi in Oceanside. No Cover Charge. contact [email protected] for more details.

The Munk takes a break from rolling in sawdust to play with her giant squeeky edamame.

More fun soon...

B

I'm with Benz for the florida store, this could afford the luck to see an awesome store and 2 fantastic carvers at the same time (Benz and you). And what about a Freaky Boutiki in Paris, I know you speak french  ?

Pakolololita taking her time with another perfect moai. Shag Inspired.

The Reverend Captain Dread Pirate Murf (aka Our Man In The Pacific) shows off his Night Of The Tiki homage tryptic. The Shag Tang is unfinished.

Anakonia finally gets a break from running the shop to finish up her latest Aloha mask.

I've been as busy too finishing up old projects sidelined by life and some recent welcome commissions. This little Shipwreck teak Hawaiian is promissed to a very patient TCer.

My Maori box finally finished w/ abalone eyes & red interior. See Ben I didn't throw it in the lagoon after all. :)

A Koa Tang/Marq hybrid from the Benz scrap wood box...

We've been invited by Primo Beer to participate in some upcomming promotions so I decided to dress up our Burros a la Maori fern patterns & Hawaiian tapa. Here I'm getting ready to start a 3.5 foot Mellow Moai commissioned By Guava Beach Bar & Grille.

I should have had Toni sit on Nick's shoulders for a Master Blaster effect but this will have to do.

Happy Anniversary to us!

Hard to believe we used to sell fresh off the presses copies of Otto's Tiki News and hot out of the kiln Bosko drunken Moais to those adventurous enough to comb the SoCal beaches looking for our legendary store even then... that Reggae superstar Eek-A-Mouse lived next door and used to sweep our sidewalks to keep them free of duppys while singing about us "Freak Factory biddy biddy-bing! Hodaddy-diddy-diddy-dong"...that Spielberg's Dreamworks would hire my dear departed dog Spot to be in the Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous... that the cast of MTV's REAL WORLD and Adam Sandler's buddies would reeeeaaally like our smoke shop... that you might bump into other Hollywood types like Michael Keaton, Faruza Balk or Luis Guzman hovering around the poster and tee shirt racks or that musicians like Ike Turner, The Thrills or the David Nelson Band have enjoyed rapping with us over the receding years...

Tempus Fugit, eh?

Peace, Love & Tikis.

Anyhoo...
