"Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling...."

And thanks to everyone who bought a SNS Mug from me at Tiki Oasis! :)

Hahaha! I love the little Mothra Ladies!

Here is the latest in the "Squid's Luau Pig/Guest Ruiner" collaboration series.
It started as a casting of one of these nice lil' piggies:

Then after my ruinin' hands got a hold of one:

The transformation into the WAR PIG commenced!

Nothing signifies Tiki quite the way a Black Sabbath song can, right? :)
Into the fire and glaze next!
Thanks for looking.

Bowie

Jeez Dave!! Way to go all Dave on this one :) You RUINER!!! He looks killer brother! I would consider glazing the inside, and maybe some of the outer areas, but you could really make this little feller pop with a little paint too...just a thought. You da MAN Bowie!

Thanks for visiting, everyone! i wasn't sure how the War Pig was going to be received since it's really not what some people would consider "Tiki"...

...or is it? Where'd he get that mug? Plundered it, I'd say.

4Wheeler, yeah, wouldn't Ozzy approve! Thanks, Mango! (hm, or should I be saying "tanks"?) Sing it, GMAN! Uncle Toesy, see you at Hank's? Babalu, thanks-I mean tanks! I'll bring it over this weekend. Queen K- Hooray for the Pig Mug! Benella, merci! where have you been, man? Benz, yes, sick, sick, sick! laojia, your tattooist is COOL! Maddogmike & mp, can't wait to see what you Ruiners come up with for your piggies! Ruin 'em good! Tanks, BigT, Gracias, Clarita! Kinny, tell us about your jar-head baby-killing excursion sometime! Tanks, seeksurf!

Squid, this is all your ruinin' fault.

Bowie

Bump too cool!!!

B

Although it took me 3 months to respond, thanks for the bump, Mooney!

Here's what little I've been up to. First is a PNG style drum mug I carved from a blank casting Babalu made and encouraged me to do something with.

I made a rough sketch from a photograph in a book, then put the book away and went by only the sketch so that the image I made would be twice removed from the actual piece. It's 9" tall.

This is my current project. A hand built mug in my fav Kona Style.

It's fun to be able to design things this way without having to think about undercuts and stuff for molding purposes. You can go a little crazy and do what you like.
I put him in the classic "wrestler's stance" common in Kona Style. Think I'll call him Lil' Tuff Guy or something like that. He's 10" tall.
Babalu, I'll bring him over to throw in the fire soon! :o

Thanks for looking!
Happy Holidays! Fa-Ra-Ra-Ra-Raaa, Ra-Ra-Ra-Raa!
:)

Bowie

DAAAAAAAAAAANG!
Conquerin 2 shores!
PNG and hawaiian!
you Sir,are Genius Smarts!
love the stance!
and the colors and style on PNG boy
are waaaaaay perfecto!
Go BO!

Like Ken said... DAAAAAAAAAAANG!

The Kona Style tiki is so cool!

I love the extra "nudge" you gave the head dress and the "wrestler" stance!

Brings so much more life and action to the tiki. The detail is off the hook.

And agreed on the PNG mug... great color combinations and wonderful lines!

Two great pieces... congrats!

Holy Cow Sir B! The little tough guy turned out superb! Really nice brother...I love, love the way his little arms are pushing those "eye tails?" out creating that circle shape there. Lot's of fun movement in this one boss. :)

H

Both of your pieces look like they are alive and full of expression, excellent job as always. Your work is amazing.

C

Excellent mug, very Bowana! I hear you about not having to worry about molds, if it wasn't for the exploding factor, making original mugs would be a total pleasure.. have a wonderful new year!

T

That is a killer design above

This mug reminds me of the Gecko mug I was looking at today

here

Man, that "Bowie" mug is out of this world. The power in that pose, as if he is ready to break all bonds, is just viceral. Awesomeness!

Aloha!

Marcus

TB

OH MON DIEU!!!!! you killed me too!!!
I love it :)
bonne année! Baï

R

Hey bowana. Not sure if you found a solution for this :-

I actually have that all the time, inside my patterns, im ment to produce those lines at the same distance appart, and then run over from the other direction, if done correctly it leaves a net pattern. I can do it clean already, but im trying to learn this other style. Anyway if you hold the chisel OR the mallett hard you cant create the effect, both hands must be held loose so the chisel bounces twice, and leaves an indent.
Im just guessing the wood you use is real soft. Anyway after i block out, if i want it clean, you can push the chisels through by hand/ or hold it vertically and pull the chisel back with the grain. When you pull it off, It looks like its been hit with every grade of sand papaer. I usually only use flats or 2's or 3's to scrape.

It's been 11 days since your last post. What have you been up to?
You never posted a pic of the finished/glazed War Pig.

That's a mere 8 seconds in "Bowana time"...

Check back in about three months. :P

Buzzy Out!

B

Aloha and thanks for visiting!

LLT- Yep, conquering two shores (in the good Las Vegas Way of course!)
Gotta broaden my horizons!

Lake Surfer- The hardest part about it was getting that "nudge" just right.
I wanted it to look about to jump off the base! Thanks for stopping by!

GROG- Oh my God! I killed GROG!!! The War Pig, you ask? I'm afraid I can't say anything about that
right now. Stay tuned though...

amate- A shot glass you say? That's some serious drinking! Thanks for visiting!

Jonesy- Lil' Tuff Guy is dry now...firing soon!

Benz- Thanks, my friend! Screw the mold process!

Babalu- Hmm. yeah, eye tails, that's a good term for them. What's next? See
I'll be over to ruin soon!

hiltiki- Thanks, girl! Can't wait to see what you come up with at TikiG's Chop!

4WD- I didn't want the PNG one to look exactly like the picture in the book, so
that was the method I came up with. I have the terrible habit of unconsciously
duplicating things verbatim.

Hank- 'hanks!!

AlohaStation- Thanks, and the feeling is mutual!

BIG tiki scott- Thanks! Can ya tell Kona Style is my fav?!

kountzyro- Thanks from waaaay on the other coast!

congatiki- I thought I killed GROG too, but he posted a second comment so I guess
I wasn't so lucky!!

leleliz- You are right, I do need to make and post more hand built mugs! Glad you are
enjoying them!

surfintiki- Thanks bro, and you were right about GROG!!

AKUAE- Merci mon ami!

laojia- Merci mon ami to you too!

Clarita- Uh oh! Did you have some trouble with explosions in the kiln?
Gracias por tu visita! feliz año nuevo!

teaKEY- Yeah, Gecko and I must have been looking at the same picture.
Great minds do think alike you know! hahaha!

Aweulekuula- Thanks for stopping in! BTW, nice TC name!

Bai- NOOO!! I killed Bai! Oh please come back to life!
Can you hear me?? Say something!!

Rainhawk- That wood was eucalyptus which is very hard. I found that if I hit the
chisel hard enough so that the wood chips off with just one whack
that it reduced the amount of those annoying lines a bit. Still haven't
quite perfected it. Thanks for the input. I'll give it a try on my next carving!

Buzzy/GROG- It's been 11 days? Sheesh, feels like it's only been about 8 seconds! :)

So as Lil' Tuff Guy dries out, I started another mug.

It's based on the Hawaiian images that are sort of like woven basketry covered with feathers.

Only mine's not covered with feathers!

I made a few wood carvings and a pendant with this same design,
so now a mug!

Babalu was surprised at the size of these guys and suggested that
I post a picture that shows a familiar object for scale. I think everyone
knows this guy, huh?

Thanks for stopping by and happy 2010! Aloha, Mr. Hand! :)

Bowie

L

Man Bowana you may not post often but when you do its killer!
