I don't know how much of a secret it was, but Friday night ended with the Love Me Knots and The Barbwires. (Friday went pretty late.) Saturday it was the Lampshades and The Untouchables. Sunday it was magician Rob Zabrecky and Casino Royale. CR did an amazing first set of spy themes with a brass section and a great girl singer. Charles Phoenix and Martin Cate just about shook the walls down with their seminars, the hotel guys said they've NEVER heard laughter and action like that in the main ballrooms. We had to sweep people off the floors after Martin's, and TikiWineBear told me he almost had to leave Charles' show because he was having trouble having enough time to breath between the laffs. I don't know how many people were aware of it, but we had a world premiere showing of the movie "The Burlesque Assassins" on Sunday afternoon, with a burlesque show in the middle, champagne, and a talk by the director. It was a gasser, man. |

THAT was the best Oasis to date! The proof is in the 700+ pictures and the fact that my voice is pretty much gone. Thanks Otto/Doe and everyone who makes things happen behind the scenes from the vendors to volunteers to the performers. I didn't hit all the parties...mainly because I was blacking out..but thanks to : Purple Orchid's Welcome Party on Thursday. It ain't Oasis until there is a stop by your room to kick off the weekend. Monet2u for the after Bali Hai shindig. Next year I will make it in your room longer :) I missed Thee Swank Bastards :( but the Creepy Creeps KILLED IT in their suite at midnight Friday. KILLED IT! Lost my voice from all the screaming and I think my feet went numb from all the dancing but DAMN! THAT set was off the freaking chain!! Tonga Hut's 2 night extravaganza. Marie your drinks were the bomb! Awesome snowcone idea! And the room decor was amazing! Amy, Jeremy,Marie, Scott, Marty you guys are the bee's knees! Such a bummer Jeremy wasn't there. EasterIslandElvis and his band of friends for some tasty cocktails as well as the mug shot wall prop. So creative kids  To the fine folks of Tiki Hell. A personal thank you for the recovery of the wallet and the mug that Filthy Midget lost. We really appreciated disaster being averted. I know how much money and time you put into your suite so thank you, thank you, thank you! Tikitastic, TikiPug as well Kelly (from Trader Sam's) and his friends for letting us come booze it up. Awesome cocktails and great time for sure. Thanks for letting us swing on by. Tiki Oasis is pretty much my most favorite event of the year and it was great to spend it with so many fine friends both new and old. I seriously can not wait until next year already...I can only request to the global warming gods to chill the place down next August...us Bay Area Folks can't handle the heat! Man, it was pretty uncomfortable getting into the spirit of the event, sporting a formal dinner jacket and tie in a hot crowded room party. Oh the things we do for Tiki !! This would have been a great year for the "Eden's Island" / Nature Boy / Au Naturale Tiki Oasis that I know is coming. :D (Edited for passing judgment on Brudda Bear's passing of judgment. But isn't that why the internet was invented ?? :D ) [ Edited by: JOHN-O 2012-08-20 16:57 ] |

Somehow we're home, unloaded, unpacked, and exhausted. That was a fantastic weekend. Many many thanks for the efforts of so many people...Otto & Baby Doe, the Tiki Oasis staff, the volunteers, the artists, performers, educators, vendors, room party hosts, and all of the friends (new and old) we saw this weekend. The time really just flew by. The Tikiyaki Orchestra set a really high bar Thursday night with their performance at the Bali Hai and Val and I rode that energy throughout the weekend. I'm not sure how Martin Cate keeps finding ways to top himself, but I'll just enjoy the ride as he does. We didn't make it to a ton of room parties, but I can say both the Ding Dong Devils and the Tonga Hut parties were top notch. And the new art we picked up...I can't wait until it's on the walls and shelves. Like many others, I have hundreds of photos to sort through for the photo thread. But that's a project for tomorrow. I would like to thank Otto and Doe for putting together another event. They pulled of the event of the year and it showed with thousands of happy Tiki-philes. Special thanks to the folks behind the scenes: Cammo, Mateo, Belle, Koz, Casey, Jim Giddings, Jaye, Megan, Kitty Kat, Shocker, Patrick, Thomas, Test_subj, Rob Roy.... And many more volunteers (you know who you are) and staff that have helped to make Tiki Oasis the largest and most eleborate Tiki event in the known world.... THE WORLD! See you all next year! |

I've dragged my mother to T.O. the past three years. Sorry for all the ankles I've clipped with her wheelchair! I really hope she's well enough to attend next year. She's played country steel guitar since the 1950's. And if you play steel, you gotta play some Hawaiian. One of her best groups was Wild Oats (http://www.ibiblio.org/hillwilliam/BGdiscography/?v=fullrecord&albumid=6645) but she also led a pretty wild all-girl group - The Farmer's Daughters - in the 1970's. The crowds, heat and hassle were getting to her a little this year, until she heard the theme for next year. Now she's looking forward to it! See you then!! |

In regards to the Huffington Post piece
Hi, I know the writer (and in fact set up the article) - the angle was of a light hearted and humorous approach, as the piece was posted in both Huff Post and a variation on La Figa, part of FiredogLake.com; both sites known for their politics. The writer is a very cool person, a HUGE fan and supporter of low-brow and pop surrealism art (and the owner of at least two Heather Watts paintings.) She gets it! Hello! This piece was not about literal politics, it was about ironic humor, poking fun at the very blog she writes for! Instead taking the press release and being all deadpan about it, she took it, along with what she knows about the event, and turned it into an entertaining, ironic and funny piece - which points the reader to the art show, car show and marketplace... She came out to the event during the weekend and will do post-coverage in another blog. My final word on that, but not the event...I once again had a GREAT time - my absolute favorite weekend of the year (I've been to all 12)! Working on photo albums for all four days (will post on the photo thread) and looking forward to next year --- overalls or Nudie (the designer) suit? So. Much. FUN. I got some feedback that more women would like to have the opportunity to get their hair and makeup done (1940's, 1950's and 1960's styles) at Tiki Oasis. Baby Doe and I were discussing the possibility of setting up a private little hair salon/makeup studio with multiple beauticians and charging reasonable prices for services. Would any of you be into that? :) |

Agree with so much here. Some of the bands were not my cup of tea, but that's ok. Great idea for adult hair and makeup, but maybe not next year. How will we see the bands through the mile-high country hairdos? And the virgin cocktail bar would not just be for kiddies. I choose not to drink but feel I'm missing a good portion of the show. At least if I had a "Roy Rogers" in hand I could pretend I'm one of the gang! |

Would totally dig a salon for updo's. Especially when it is so humid. Though, it would be important for people to realise they must come clean hair and clean faced, so people can get in, done and back to the party asap. |

I was asked by many vendors to run into the bar and grab them pina coladas without booze just because it was so hot and they wanted something cocktail-esque minus the rum to drink as they vended. I don't think having a mocktail bar in addition to the bars selling booze is a bad thing. In fact if they were able to set up a blended non-alcoholic drink station near the bar/burger stand I would think it would do very well. Unfortunately for many of us who don't think kids should be at Oasis kids will continue to be at Oasis so its something you can no longer really complain about. I am glad they got rid of burlesque on the mainstage only because I find it boring. (no offense to the ladies) I also know that a few burlesque performers that I spoke to LAST year felt uncomfortable stripping down in front of all the kids that were next to the stage so moving them indoors was a smart way to handle it. I honestly felt like there were more kids last year then this year but seeing as how I spent 99% of my time drunk there could of been busloads of children there and I would not have noticed :) I loved how when the spy theme was first announced everyone questioned it and when you got to Oasis you could tell people went all out. It really bums be out that this time last week I was on my way down South and now I am suffering from post Oasis blues ...can't wait for next year and the Hulabilly theme is going to be just as much fun! Come on, we all know Tiki Oasis is a kid-friendly family event...if it wasn't, why would Baby Doe and Otto bring their own children? Tiki Oasis will never be Disneyland or church, but it should be a place where everyone (of all ages and backgrounds) can relax and feel comfortable and enjoy their vacation. You have to agree: unassuming children or elderly folks accidentally experiencing strip-tease on the mainstage in broad daylight can't really be a positive thing. Well, at least the Von Stroheims agree because the majority of burlesque acts was moved inside this year. The burlesque culture is definitely a big part of the lounge scene and should be kept and heavily advertised at Tiki Oasis but just kept slightly more private and taboo, because of the nature of it and the wide range of ages that attend the event. Keeping it secret and "behind closed doors" or later at night makes it sexier and cooler anyway. I didn't say "set a no alcohol rule", dude. I get that the art of alcoholic cocktail making is virtually the heart and soul the lounge scene and culture, but what's wrong with people wanting to have non-alcoholic tropical drinks available in addition to alcoholic drinks? Sodas from the hotel restaurant and coffee bar are $3.50, and added flavor is .75... now, I don't know about everyone else, but I don't want to pay over $4.00 for a darn shirley temple. I'm just saying, not every tiki-phile drinks alcohol, and some people have to drive home or to hotels after all the fun. I'm just suggesting there be more variety for sober folks and underage kids who want a cold, refreshing and fun drink on their vacation :) If there was a blended drink bar or station that offered fruit smoothies, blended virgin drinks and flavored soda pops at reasonable price, I think it would do well. Especially if they had little umbrella garnishes :) The pin-up hair and makeup class is more of a do-it-yourself instruction session involving close to 100 people. The class offers tips and tricks on how to do one style of makeup and hair and you follow the instructor step by step. There is no one-on-one interaction. Apparently during this last one there was some feedback that there was too much "question and answer" time and not enough actual instruction and "doing". The people in the class asked questions that didn't apply to everyone such as "well my hair is really frizzy...what do I do about that?" and those kind of questions ended up taking up a lot of time that could have been used for instruction. The class is great for people who really do want to be taught how to do their own, but sometimes women just want to be pampered and have a professional make them look their best. The pin-up hair and makeup services would be offered on site, but away from the vendors and festivities in a more private location where women wouldn't feel like they were "on display" while getting done up. They could choose from a list of hairstyles and makeup looks ranging from 1940's-1960's looks. There might also be a little lounge and cocktail bar inside the same area for ladies to relax and hang out. |

My wife and I were able to find a babysitter for Friday night, so we partied at 5 of the room parties, saw the burlesque show and did so many other incredible things at Oasis and took a cab back home. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a sitter for Saturday night, so we took the kids to Oasis for the day. That would ABSOLUTELY SUCK if we couldn't bring them. We used common sense and left while it was still daylight. Of course, we would have liked to have some alone time and spend the entire night enjoying everything Oasis has to offer (my wife was bummed to miss The Untouchables), but some Oasis is better than none... |

The situation is when you have kids, everything changes No so today, everything needs to be safe & comfortable for kids, with complete disregard I thought the atmosphere of Tiki Oasis was very compromised this year due to the lack of Burlesque dancers Many families with children are completely myopic about this today & it was happening at Oasis also You can't have it both ways, your ether going to completely sanitize Tiki Oasis in which case I will no longer want to attend. |
