"I don't feel a need to attack other people I may disagree with." -Atomic Tiki Punk-

That's hilarious. (You were joking, right?)

Other than the cuss words I agree with Tom Slick's original points. A thread such as this dilutes the usefulness of Tiki Central's non-Bilge forums.

This thread would be great in Bilge.

But as a General Forum thread it's just more clutter.

This is Tiki! for all of you who don't know or forgot!
A group of friends enjoying cocktails at a Mid Century Tiki Bar
having a good time while embracing the history of such places!

Since you are talking about "Classic Tiki Culture" it was not about the clinical cataloging
of long closed Tiki Bars ,sorry Sven! (but I don't see why we should not include it in today's
Poly-pop culture) as is with most of the other contested "Is it Tiki" subjects that the loudest
detractors are in such an uproar about.

Back in March of last year I found all 8 of these in a thrift.

This is where my grandparents used to take me as a child. Hawaiian Gardens in San Jose CA.

My grandfather had a love of all things Polynesian after living in Hawaii for nearly a decade in the 20's before it was a state. He was a merchant marine and traveled through the entire South Pacific pre-world war 2. I grew up in a family who went to Trader Vics Emeryville AND San Francisco (Yes, the original one in The City) for many special family events. And that's the tip of the iceberg.

Celebrating classic and modern Polynesian Pop
Tiki Central is a place to celebrate the classic Tiki Bars of the mid-century and the design aesthetic they established. This movement grew in popularity after World War II when America had a new fascination with the South Seas and Hawaii. Tiki Bars sought to bring an idealized tropical paradise into the concrete jungle of the Modern World. Very little of it was genuine -- born mostly out of the likes of Hollywood art directors and modern architects -- but it all seemed real to a then-naïve public’s eye. The Tiki style started in bars and restaurants but soon spilled over into all forms of popular culture, including music, food, dress, TV and movies, and other forms of architecture.

The Tiki that Tiki Central focuses on is a mid-century American invention that is Polynesia-inspired. We’re here to discuss classic Tiki, what made it great, how to celebrate it and preserve it today, and how to create and influence new Tiki that isn’t generic, watered down, or misguided. The definitive guide is The Book Of Tiki, and we highly recommend that everyone on Tiki Central get the book and read up.

What Tiki Central Isn't
Everyone here at Tiki Central is passionate about the Polynesian Pop movement. While the exact edges are blurry, we can give you a bit of insight into what Tiki Central is not about:

It’s not about Jimmy Buffett and Parrotheads
It’s not modern plastic, brightly-colored tiki party decorations
It’s not about the Caribbean/Key west design aesthetic
It’s not about Reggae
It’s not about African-art inspired masks/carvings/design
It’s not about Margaritas and tequila-based drinks
It's not about simply anything that has a tiki on it or in it
It is okay to like one or more of the above and be a member of Tiki Central, just remember that it's not our focus. There are plenty of places on the web for that. We encourage new users who may not know what Tiki is to read up, search our forums, and ask questions

who you calling old!

Oh and don't be a "rimes with pooch" like some of the others here, makes you a joiner.

You know I'd like to salvage this thread and turn it into a discussion that's new and different.

Rather than focusing on what constitutes definitive classic Tiki-style, how about sharing what represents "THE SPIRIT OF TIKI" to you?

Here's mine:

  1. Marlene Dietrich singing "Hot Voodoo".

  1. The Mary Kaye Trio. To me they represent Tiki's Lounge roots, when people went to Tiki establishments dressed to the nines and the only people wearing Aloha-wear were your bartender and your waiter.

  1. Eartha Kitt. OK, maybe not Tiki-style but I like to think of her as Witco-style. :) "I Want to be Evil"

  1. And as noted before, the nightclub segment of "Soy Cuba".

Let's keep an open mind here and try to think "Out of the (Tiki) Box".

Otherwise how do you expect to enjoy Tiki Oasis 2011 when it goes "South of the Border" ??

"It always amazes me when a subject like this comes up and BigBro just supplies knowledge and insight on the matter just to be helpful and to provide information/history and people get all snippy with him. lame

As for me the day I sign in here to post and someone deems my post not tiki because I include souvenirs from Hawaii in my Tiki FInds is the day I stop reading TC all together.

I like to use these forums as a means for escape, to be inspired, to learn and to pretty much absorb information from the various people who like to post and share it. I do not want to be a part of something that has a select group of people speaking for the forum members as a whole deeming topics and threads "not tiki enough" to be included on TC. that would be super lame.

that was my 2 cents. :)"

ATP sez ( Its funny that you are attacking "BigBro" now for those same insights? Guess what? you are now part of that select group speaking for everyone else & since your Hawaii souvenirs have been deemed not Tiki (not by me) why are you still on TC?
You really are a big hypocrite and yes it is "super lame")

"You really are a big hypocrite ..." -Atomic Tiki Punk-

A hypocrite, according to merriam-webster.com is:

1: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

If someone thought BigBro Tiki got trashed on a thread for stating his opinion but he/she also thinks your thread is a pointless time wasting piece of clutter he/she is not a hypocrite. That would be like calling someone a hypocrite because he/she likes steak but doesn't like Chicken McNuggets.

A perfect example of hypocrisy is someone who cites the Tiki Central rules in order to make a point and one of those rules is to not call people names and then he/she goes on to call people names.

Sorry ATP, but you're a wanker.

TM

I am not sure what the "Tiki" everyone here is talking about even is any more...

For example, very few people from this forum ever come and see the Smokin' Menehunes play, because we are considered to be "Hawaiiana" and not "tiki"? (Yeah, I was PMed that one time) YET, we play exactly the type of music you would have heard had you stepped into a real Tiki bar or polynesian style restaraunt back in the day....after all, how many 1950's era tiki bars or polynesian restaraunts had surf bands, punk bands or even exotica bands playing? I say "Exotica" because I feel it was really rare to hear one of those bands outside Hawaii (Denny and Lyman). Most Polynesian restaraunts here on the mainland would have had the full Luau feel, with the hapa haole band, dancers, and all the mugs and fake cantonese food some of us talk about today.

The Smokin' menehunes will never be allowed to play Tiki Oasis, because we are not "Tiki" YET, they have bands like the Ghastly Ones and Creepy Creeps headlining the same event (No offense to the Ghastly Ones or Creepy Creeps, but are they really Tiki Bands?)

The emphasis on this forum seems to be the extinction of Tiki, or the glorification of the extinction of Tiki...the collection of artifacts. Rarely anything new being created is in the mid-century poly pop style...it all seems to be geared more towards low-brow art, tattoo and hot rod culture, surf, ex-punkers, etc, with only a passing nod to the original polypop foundation...

While most of that new stuff is very cool, and very well made and created...I have to ask? Is it Tiki?

I am by no means a Tiki purist. I like everything from the mid century, and in my mind I actually lump most of it together. Space age? Love it. Googie architecture has the same tropical foliage found outside as the "tiki" bars do, or "tropical backyards" do.

Les Baxter can cite Africa or space exploration as quickly as he can some quasi polynesian style.

My problem is with the addition of the modern elements into Tiki. Oh, I understand why of course: Few people here are of an age where jazz based music was popular. That's why there are so many hippies, rockers and punkers are on this forum (god bless 'em!) but it is also why only a small circle of Die Hards come and watch the Smokin' menehunes play...ever! Yet, we pack the place with older people (60 plus) who had a closer chronological relationship to the original polypop movement.

If you happen to make it to a menehunes gig, take a look around you at the audience. Ex vegas showgirls, ex flight attendants, ex hawaiian "beach boys". That's our target audience...and it never has been "tiki" central people...and I think that is a shame!

After all, had you gone into a Trader Vics or Don the Beachcombers back in the day, do you really think you would have seen a surf-rock-punk band wearing fezzes entertaining a heavily tatted out crowd? Because that's what you see nowadays.

  • It’s not about Margaritas and tequila-based drinks
  • It's not about simply anything that has a tiki on it or in it
    Let me add;
  • Seriously, It's not about Eartha Kitt
  • Seriously, it isn't about the Andrew Sisters or Rum or Coke
  • Seriously, It's not about a generalized plain ol' Tiki Thread within the main General Tiki Forum that shows Hawaiian Shirts(#3), VooDoo Album cover art that is Afro-inspired(#4), or photos of HULA girls(#8)
  • Seriously, It's not about what represents the spirit of tiki to you...

There are a few of you who have blurred the subject of what is tiki on THIS SITE, and that to me, is reprehensible.

**The Tiki that Tiki Central focuses on is a mid-century American invention that is Polynesia-inspired. We’re here to discuss classic Tiki, what made it great, how to celebrate it and preserve it today, and how to create and influence new Tiki that isn’t generic, watered down, or MISGUIDED.

It is okay to like one or more of the above and be a member of Tiki Central, just remember that it's not our focus. There are plenty of places on the web for that. We encourage new users who may not know what Tiki is to read up, search our forums, and ASK QUESTIONS.**

Now if someone who's never partook on TC before, just happens to research mid-century tiki, and they come across this site, it will be threads like this one, that will decieve one's research if it is allowed to continue. You have opinions of what tiki is to you, is obvious, but isn't what this site caters to, or educates towards.

I'm not going to 'chill out' and go to other threads, as if to ask me to ignore the community being trashed with insignificant posts that muddles this websites history and accuracy. People who like to meddle and see what they can get away with come and go all the time, but I've been here the whole while, to help watch over the site. I'm not going to let someone who thinks they know better, water down the very ideas behind what established this website to begin with, just as I wouldn't accept water being poured into my Mai Tai just because it came from a bottle that was marked "Rum".

And FYI ATP, I did review your contributions to TC, and have to say I'm not all that impressed.

"What did you eat for TIKI Dinner"
"What TIKI Music are you listening to"(plus reviews!)
"Photo Association" (No surprise there!)
"Suggestions for what TIKI drink I could order at local bar with great tender/great selection?"
"Should Tiki Central be 'Politically Correct'?"
"Whats my TIKI Beef with Atomic Tiki Punk.."
"That would be a great Band Name!(Wow, and somehow it doesn't have the abused word 'tiki' in it!)
"What TIKI cigarette should I smoke, when posting 'what TIKI something...' I post?"(joke, but yea)
And event topics...plenty of event posts/replies.

Did you ever once stop to think that why you've had more than a half dozen internet tangle-ups on TC alone, and that maybe it isn't them (as you say) 'teaming up' on you, but rather its YOU and your topics and/or replies?
Because usually, if I get into a disagreement with one person on a forum, whoopty whoop. But if I rile up more than one person, that maybe I'm the one who is off base, and not them?
Just throwing that out there...

Edited for capitalization of keywords within the statement.

Leleliz don't you have to go post on "Tiki Finds" all the cool "Tiki mugs" you bought today!, since this is the bulk of what you
contribute to Tiki Central, you are a fine example of "Tiki Content" expert?
or is this just compulsive need to post everything you buy, i.e "collectors syndrome"?

Ouch, this smacks close to the bone for me. Lately I have limited the majority of my posting to Tiki Finds or related "show me" threads simply because of threads just like this one.

I am not sure I suffer from "collector syndrome" because I share what I have found with the members and lurkers of Tiki Central. I find there is more "tiki" posted in the Tiki Finds thread than any one thread on this forum. Yes, I would venture to guess that maybe 15 to 20% of what is posted on Finds is not tiki in the somewhat complicated and seemingly difficult to define context, but I have learned more about what is and isn't tiki in this thread alone since I first started coming here. I post my finds to show the community what is out there and to share information...nothing more.

I am beginning to question my Grand Member status at this time. So much of what I have seen here lately has left me feeling rather cold. I came to Tiki Central for a break from this kind of distraction and I now understand why so many have left or do not participate here anymore.

I can honestly say I do not have a beef with anyone one here. Everyone I have met or corresponded with I consider a friend here, regardless of how others might feel about or treat them. Yes, I have disagreed with some posts and people at times, given and received some flack, but I always felt like at the end of the day, it was all good.

So it appears, based on the comments here, we can all agree there is no resident or in-house "Tiki" expert posting on Tiki Central. Including me!

See you over in Tiki Finds soon I hope!

Rather than focusing on what constitutes definitive classic Tiki-style, how about sharing what represents "THE SPIRIT OF TIKI" to you?

That is NOT what this site is geared for. I've tried explaining it to the best of my ability, but what parts of the mission statement is it that people are not understanding?

There are a few of you who have blurred the subject of what is tiki on THIS SITE, and that to me, is reprehensible.

But Tom what would you consider appropriate discussion here on TC ?? The mission statement is supposed to serve as a guideline rather than a hard-fast rule. "Tiki" means different things to different people whether it's Classic Tiki-style, Tiki Lifestyle, and yes even "The Spirit of Tiki" which even the Bigbro has alluded to. We'll never get 100% agreement here on that. For instance:

  1. Is Surf music Tiki ?? Most will say yes but some Exotica die-hards will say no.
  2. Is a Tiki mug that doesn't have specific Tiki iconography really a Tiki mug ?? Some will say yes and some will say no.
  3. Is discussion of the new Hawaii 5-0 which takes in the 21st century modern Hawaii really a Tiki topic ?? I would say no but a lot of people are having fun talking about it. That's cool with me.
  4. How about my postings on Mid-century Las Vegas? (I'm still waiting for someone to move that thread).
  5. How about the Jungle-style thread I started early this year? I think it turned out to be a pretty popular topic on the General Forum but it had nothing to do with Tiki-style.
  6. And Tiki Oasis is going "South of the Border". Yes, it's not representative of TC per se but it could be indicative of how the Tiki Revival is thinking "outside the box". Shouldn't TC be as open minded ??

I could go on and on...

I can appreciate your steadfastness to high Tiki ideals (which I remember from your Trader Vic's Bar and Grill thread), but really the way to raise the bar here is to post interesting and articulate content rather than spending time "policing" TC. Yes ATP regrettably continues to escalate the argument but in all these cases, he was originally minding his own business on threads that he created.

I seriously don't think the issue about this thread is whether all the sincerely posted images were Tiki or not.

The main issue is that this is not a thread which provides any useful content. It's a "time killer or non-informative" thread that belongs in Bilge.

The images which were sincerely posted here could have been posted in existing threads which would have done two useful things:

  1. Bump a good existing thread up to the surface where it could be discovered or rediscovered.

  2. Add content to an existing thread which would strengthen the usefulness of Tiki Central.

If one of the images was so unique as to not possibly fit in an existing thread then a new thread could have been established that focused on the unique Tiki content of the image. Ideally such a thread would have some thoughtful text either contemplating the unique image or asking questions about it.

As it is this sort of thread, one which has no particular focus and is solely made up of Tiki images, is the kind of thing that compromises the quality of the "serious" forums on Tiki Central by burying them in nonsense.

some people will do anything to see their name..and some people have what they are in their name..some people will do anything to have more posts. 1 picture at a time .useless remarks, etc..this is an issue that i brought up to this individual in the past only to get a nasty e-mail back..i know this person would not be that way to my face-- so why online??

John-O, while I understand what you are trying to say, and can appreciate your enthusiasm, all of the mentioned questions you are asking in their own right are NOT tiki.
Its called Surf Music, and while people who are into tiki may listen to Surf Music, doesn't make the music tiki. Besides, there is no such thing as true 'tiki music'. There is however, Hapa Hoele, Hawaiian, Exotica, and Surf Music styles. None of those alone are tiki, but played in a party enviroment, they could collectively be called tiki music, I suppose. I myself don't go around calling Horses, Mules, and Mules, Horses. Just because they look the same or are similar to something I envision, doesn't mean they are.

2. Is a Tiki mug that doesn't have specific Tiki iconography really a Tiki mug ?? Some will say yes and some will say no.

This one is a bit trickier, and actually can be confusing for ALOT of people. My OPINION on this one is this;
If it was or is, a mug that serviced the tiki bar industry at one time or another, you can slap the name tiki next to the word mug. If it is a Rumph "Chewbacca" ceramic Mug, then it is just that, and nothing more.

3. Is discussion of the new Hawaii 5-0 which takes in the 21st century modern Hawaii really a Tiki topic ?? I would say no but a lot of people are having fun talking about it. That's cool with me.
That is fine with me, because there is nobody declaring that Hawaii 5-0 is tiki. It is under its own title thread, and not misleading.

4. How about my postings on Mid-century Las Vegas? (I'm still waiting for someone to move that thread).

If you titled that thread Mid Century Tiki Vegas, and only focused on the Mid Century without tiki, I'd have a problem. Your thread is fine by me. Same goes for #5

To be honest, Tiki Oasis is a party that celebrates and embraces tiki & theming, along with other aspects other than tiki. There is alot of mid century appeal, and frankly I feel its because alot of stuff goes hand in hand. But alone, they would not be able to stand up and support the wording tiki, if there was none. Mid Century Modern is not tiki, but there was tiki in Mid Century Modern...
I just do not want to see this site get sidetracked and off topic. And just because ATP, or anyone else minds their own business posting informative (or uninformative) posts thay they create will always be open for scrutiny, and will not be ignored. The day that these types of posts are ignored is the day this site no longer holds the standards that Hanford himself set forth to be followed. It's ultimately his house, his rules, and we are all participatory guests who are allowed to share the visions under those few guidelines.

I can appreciate your steadfastness to high Tiki ideals (which I remember from your Trader Vic's Bar and Grill thread), but really the way to raise the bar here is to post interesting and articulate content rather than spending time "policing" TC.

Truthfully, I am more of a lurker than a poster. I can appreciate people's findings, whether its a flea market find, or recently unearthed facts regarding the discovery of something previously unknown. I chime in only when I can help or provide information per my knowledge background.
That TVB&G is still a joke to me, as is the Corporation as a whole. That is another story in itself, though.
It's too bad you haven't read my posts on the Polynesian in Walteria/Torrance, or the threads on my own local establishments. I feel I've made some significant contributions over my time here, but just because there isn't any real new discovery for me, doesn't mean I'm going to go and start a tiki photo association thread, which loses its integrity as a thread by post number 3...

Either you want to learn what tiki is and discuss it, or you want to dilute TC with your own ideas of what you THINK tiki is on TC...I've personaly always chosen #1, while adding a dash of #2 to help support and further strengthen the topic, which ultimately makes this site the chock full of knowledge it is today!
