Aloha Campbell!

Lot's of great stuff coming out of your studio!

Love all the character and texture you put in your tikis!

A-1 finish also... gives 'em a real nice vintage look.

Keep up the great work!

B

Watango, I'm Really loving your tikis. You have Nice skills from the carving, sanding down to the finishing, and I Love how you start at the feet and work up same as Marcus, is that a Down under thing? It seems up here we mostly start at the top and work down, but the way you finish as you go is great.
congrats on the Appleton gig, hope it' the first of many to come!

Aarons Akua,Tikithomas- Cheers for take'n alook glad
you dig'em.

Lakesurfer-thanks for the comp's,glad you like the finishes.
I try and give my stuff the aged look, so it sounds like it's
work'n.Cheers Watango

Benz-Glad that you're dig'n my carvings,the start'n with the feet
style is something I just gave a go oneday after constantly run'n
out of log for the bodies and seeing Marcus do this so maybe it is
a downunder thing.Hope your feel'n better and ready to set them chips
afly,n.Cheers Watango

Great carves from Down-unda! I love your huge, all-over body burning, the end results are terrific.

great stuff watango. love that you have elvis watching over your carvings. did you paint the hula pinup girl or is she one of those beaded curtains? like her lots.

bd

awesome pieces, Watango! real solid designs. really like that over-all burning method. one hell of a collection and pad there, too.

Tikimango-Thanks,glad you like the finish.

Bdaddy-ALoha from HawAII ELVIS daddyo! The beaded curtain is just a market
cheapy, great for cover'n up ugly doors.

GPtiki-cheers,I find the burn'n finish quick and really effective
at giving any peice that vintage look.

cheers Watango.

P

Campbell, I've never even been to Kustom Lane. It's out in the eastern suburbs somewhere yeah? How long they been open? Bad date though...that's around my birthday!

The tikis were shown years ago (Gavin Dyke carved them at LEAST 6 years ago) at Outre Gallery so they've "retired" to my garden and won't move again hopefully.

Great work,

Benjamin.

Wayne,Kustomlane's been goin for just on a couple of years now
aand are located on Luton Lane in Hawthorn, so not really that
far out of town just past Richmond. I remember you hav'n some hebel
tiki's at John's Rod and Kustom picnic years back that were pretty kool.
You should try and make it down to KL for the show and maybe score yourself
a neat birthay presie.

Benella, thanks heaps for the compliment Ben.

Here's a couple of pic's I found on the wkend the first photo is of
my very first attempt at carving and the second pic is #4 I think.

S

Those are some Great 1st Tikis. Your on Fire Mate.

Seeks, thanks mate, the first one I carved with a broken beer bottle
and a thong but by #4 had realized that wouldn't cut it so I got me
some real tools.

B

Hey, That #4 was really Great! I Lofe the deep detail and the precise detail over all. The eyes are truly unusual and cool ONLY #4? Took me a Long time to get half that good.

Ben,thanks for drop,n by and the kind words,I still dig this peice
alot. He's pretty old now and the elements haven't been kind thats
why he's hide'n behind the pots as the bottom third has rotten away.
I'll have to be careful with my humour as i dont want to offend anyone
here.Cheers Watango

Howdy Tc'ers,I've had this peice sit'n in the background for awhile now
wait'n to finally be finished, all he needed was to be sanded and stained.
Man I hate sand'n!!!!but about 6hrs later here he is finished at last.
This is my second version of the Hawaiin Eye tiki and Im pretty stoked
with how he turned out.Cheers Watango

B

Well for someone who Hates sanding as much as you do, this guy sure had a TON of it! This is an Excellent piece with a Superb finish. Now you must Really hate sanding!
I can show you tools that will make it Much easier!

Ben,glad you dig this peice, makes it worth the effort when
artists that you admire give your stuff the nod,but back to the
subject of sand'n any advice on ways to make this hideous task
easier would be much appreciated.Cheers Watango

B

For starters This type Sanding mop/flap is the Best one and the Only one to use on carvings. All the individual"fingers" get into all the little out of the way places you would normally sand by hand OR Ignore.. It is important to start with the heavy grits and work up to the finer ones as the high grits will just polish the stuff you are trying to remove as well as ruin the fine paper. You can get these all mounted on a 1/4" Shank in 4 grits and 3 different sizes.

Look HERE for the sales page from Enco Tool Supply and look HERE for the catalog page where you can see many other sanding surprises. Be sure to look at pages before and after this page And order a catalog, it's free!
Use these on a power drill , flex shaft or die grinder with speed control and I'm sure you will have a Different feeling when it comes time to sand.
Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, I've looked everywhere for these jobbies and this supplier seems to have the Best prices over anyon else. If anyone finds them cheaper please let me know?

Cheers Ben,I just checked out the links you sent me and these guys
look like they could be the answer to my lazyness.Hopefully they ship
to Australia, Thanks for take'n the time to give me the heads up.
Cheers Watango

Very nice classic poly-pop lines on this guy. Sure looks SMOOTH!!!!!

nice job!

Nice cuts Watango!

Classic Poly Pop stylings on this guy with a silky smooth finish!

I hate sanding too, which is why I avoid it if at all possible.

You've already learned that a textured finish is a good out from hours of sanding.

Very cool piece! And especially good use of colors and natural defects of wood!

Congrats!

J.

Polynesiac, thanks for the comp,he's carved out of hardwood
(REDGUM)so with heaps of sand'n it comes up like stone.

Lakes, thanks for stop'n by and the comp,Im with you, give me
a textured finish any day.I guess sandings like taxes soon
all later we all got to pay.

Iaojia, thank you, glad you like.I just used one coat of teak
(satin)and it really brought the peice to life.

It's a long weekend here so I had another full day to spend in the
shed so I got started on another lono peice, the wood is Acacia(wattle)
the same as I used for the small marq and carves fantastic.
Here's some progress pic's of where Im at so far,I've left plenty of log
for the head so hopefully I'll be able to get a bit more funky with the headress.
Cheers Watango

Really Sweet carvings goin on here!!Love the chisel work!!Keep slayin the wood,Aloha, Mooney

great job on the Hawaiian eye tribute!

Great start on this guy!

The Acacia wood looks like it gets a little waxy after you carve it?

Cedar does that for me, and its another shortcut to not having to sand.

Love the textured surface!

Mooneytiki ,Iokona Ki'l ,Lakesurfer, thanks for the comps!
Lifes goin thru major changes at the moment but I should
be back on board soon with my carving.Cheers Watango

I'm diggin the Hawaiin Eye. Nice shape and look from those eyes and
the natural wood looks killer.

The other guy, wow! you have got the shape down well my friend.

Seeks, thanks mate.Im pretty stoked with how the H/eye peice
turned out it's an awesome peice of wood.Cheers Watango

Howdy Tc'ers, been move'n house and try'n to get back to
carv'n once I got settled, here's some progress pic's of the
small lono guy that I'll be carv'n live this Sunday as part
of Kustomlanes Tikitantrum opening if I can manage to stay away
from the beers.Cheers Watango

Hot damn!

Love this guy!

He's either grittin' his teeth in a snarl or got a shit eatin' grin!

Either way, a ton of character in 'em!

And as always, I love the textured carve on him.

Have fun at the show, and don't drink too many beers!

I agree, I too really like the textured carve. Do you mind if I ask how you do that?? Any reply or redirection would be appreciated.

Thanks

T

Love those front teeth. Those are great.

Looking really good!

BigT,Alohastaion, thanks for the comps!

Gpoobah;I just carve with a #4 curved chisel to get
the textured finish.

lakes,thanks for stop'n by,glad your dig'n the lono,
I'll try and not drink to many beers but if the suns
out they whisper my name.Cheers Watango
