This stinks, Schimmel was hilarious. Standup comic Robert Schimmel, 60, dies after car crash Schimmel's spokesman, Howard Bragman, says Schimmel died Friday evening in a Phoenix hospital. Schimmel was a passenger Thursday in a car driven by his 19-year-old daughter Aliyah. Bragman says Aliyah Schimmel swerved to avoid another car and the vehicle she was driving rolled to the side of the freeway. Bragman says she is hospitalized in stable condition. Robert Schimmel lived in Scottsdale. The comedian has been a frequent guest on “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” and on Howard Stern's radio show. His 2008 memoir, “Cancer on $5 a Day,” chronicles his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. -- Associated Press |

Founding member of ELO killed in freak accident as giant runaway hay bale smashes into his van A founding member of ELO has been killed following a freak accident involving a giant bale of hay. Mike Edwards, 62, who played cello for the band for three years, died when the giant bale weighing 50 stone crashed down on top of his van. Mr Edwards died instantly in the accident after the bale careered down the hill, and flipped over a hedge. The circular bale is believed to have been in a steeply sloping field beside the road when it somehow rolled and jumped 15ft into traffic. Police say the accident happened at around 12.30pm on Friday on the A381 between Harbetonford and Halwell in Devon. The victim was driving a white transit-type van towards Kinsgbridge when the bale of hay smashed into the front cab. The van swerved after it was hit and then collided with another smaller van coming the other way - but the second driver was unhurt. Inspector Andy Hamilton said: 'We are liaising with the health and safety people and gathering evidence from the scene of the accident and the field. 'The van came into contact with a very large bale of hay. We are investigating how this came to happen.' He added that police had spoken to the farmer who owns the field and would be talking to him again shortly. Mike was a founding member of Electric Light Orchestra and played cello with the group from their first live gig in 1972 until he left in January 1975. He quit the band to become a Buddhist and later changed his name to Deva Pramada because of his religious convictions. Mike's eccentric cello playing - including plucking the strings with an orange or grapefruit - and bizarre costumes were a major ingredient of ELO. He played cello on albums ELO II, On the Third Day, The Night The Light Went On (In Long Beach) and Eldorado. Steve Walker of the Devon and Cornwall police traffic unit said they were trying to contact his family. Bowing out: Mike Edwards, on the far left, played cello in ELO from 1972 to 1975 He said: 'This was a tragic accident and we have now identified the victim as Michael Edwards, a founder member of ELO. 'We have used photographs and YouTube footage to identify him but we now need help contacting his family for formal identification. 'We don't believe he was ever married and we have identified an ex-girlfriend but she is currently abroad.' He continued: 'We think he may have a brother called David in the Yorkshire area and we obviously need to contact him. 'Michael has no immediate family but we believe he may have taught some cello in Devon and would ask his students to contact us if they know of any relations.' |

Comedian Greg Giraldo died Wednesday (September 29) at age 44 from a reportedly accidental prescription-drug overdose. Giraldo had been hospitalized in New Brunswick, New Jersey after he overdosed on prescription pills last weekend. According to TMZ, the overdose was not a suicide attempt. Giraldo reportedly collapsed Saturday evening in his hotel room in New Jersey, where he was performing at a club. He was discovered by friends after he failed to show up for his scheduled performance. He was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Jim Norton confirmed the news via Twitter, including a picture with his fellow comedian: "Greg Giraldo passed away today. This is the last photo of us together, taken June 28 at Noam's wedding. Television producer Stephen J. Cannell, known for his work on shows including "21 Jump Street" and "The A-Team," died Thursday, his publicist said. Cannell was 69. Cannell died from complications associated with melanoma at his Pasadena, California, home surrounded by family and loved ones, said a family statement. He created, wrote and produced several iconic TV series, starting in the 1970s with "The Rockford Files." His other hit series included: "Greatest American Hero," "The A-Team," "Hunter,""Riptide," "Hardcastle & McCormick," "21 Jump Street," "Wiseguy,""The Commish," "Profit," and syndicated shows "Renegade" and "Silk Stalkings." Video: Stephen J. Cannell's 'At First Sight' Viewers may best remember the trademark closing for Cannell's productions, which showed him at a typewriter tossing a sheet of paper over his shoulder. He also acted, sometimes appearing in his own shows. Cannell had a recurring role on ABC-TV's hit series "Castle." |

Zecharia Sitchin passed away on the morning of October 9th. Zecharia Sitchin (born July 11, 1920 - died October 9, 2010) was an author of books promoting an explanation for human origins involving ancient astronauts. Sitchin attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Anunnaki, which he claims to be a race of extra-terrestrials from a planet beyond Neptune called Nibiru. He believed this hypothetical planet of Nibiru to be in an elongated, elliptical orbit in the Earth's own Solar System, asserting that Sumerian mythology reflects this view. Here are some of his books... Fascinating reads!

Book 'em Danno...you will always be in our hearts and our souls. James MacArthur, who gained worldwide fame in the 1970s as "Danno" in the iconic TV series, 'Hawaii Five-O,' died on Thursday at his home, a family representative told PEOPLE. He was 72. The actor's agent, Richard Lewis, told the AP that MacArthur died of "natural causes" in Florida, however, no other details have been given. In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as Detective Danny "Danno" Williams on 'Hawaii Five-0,' which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarret, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno." [ Edited by: VampiressRN 2010-10-28 15:04 ] |
