The price wont be the same year to year because the ticket prices change based on what your ticket package includes.

Seems that the new TO website goes live to purchase tickets around the end of April so most likely that won't change so keep checking the link that was posted because it will update to the 2012 event.

------im just loooking for a general idea; was each tic $150 ? (all symposiums & mug)

I certainly do not know the pricing for 2012, but Belinda, I think if you budgeted $150 to about $250 you would be in the ballpark for the events/mug and then if you have left over from that...SHOP!!!
http://www.tikioasis.com/2011/tickets/

I am trying to figure out my budget too (transportation, rooms, food & beverage, event wristband/mug, shopping) it can be a challenge indeed, so putting money aside starting now is critical.

SHOPAHOLIC...Hmmmm...what kind of loot will I be able to fit in my car for the ridE back to my lair.

ROOM PARTY...Stocking up on booze now for the room party, still need to perform cocktail experiments. The last one I tried tasted like prune juice...that won't work..LOL. Got our hostess outfits about 75% done. Need to figure out what kind of room decor will support our theme. Working on the swag too.

BALCONY FOR ME...Hoping I get a good balcony room as my back is so whack I just don't make it around well any more. I love watching the bands from the balcony, the sound is great up there and it is fun to see the whole crowd partying down in front of the stage.

I'm in the Oasis mood!!!

Well here we are its nearing the end of March. We are hard at work getting the volunteer gigs put together (amongst other things such as classified and classified). If you are interested in being part of the CLASSIFIED Tiki Oasis 2012 Volunteer Crew please send an interest email to: [email protected].

WE ARE NOT ASSIGNING ANY POSITIONS AT THIS TIME. If you are a veteran from last year, you will get first dibs to gigs that you did last year. I mean, why not! You did a great job! There's going to be a few changes and "classified" developments that will make this year a whole lot of fun. So keep those secure channels secure.

Be patient there’s a lot to do as we move forward.

a reminder, since John O, posted it for me here on Tiki Central
If yer coming from far away, and wanna make a whole week of fun in the California
Sun.
Check out my Surf Guitar 101 convention, Sat. Aug. 11th in Los Alamitos,
between OC and Long Beach.

then hit the beach, or Disneyland, of many of the local Tiki Bars,
then head down to San Diego for Tiki Oasis.

I was blown away last year, to talk to around 20 people at Tiki Oasis, that said they were visiting from Out of state, and went to the SG101 convention, the week before,
then came to Tiki Oasis.

Isn't this the TIKI OASIS thread?
I'm sure Otto and Baby Doe who spend an entire year planning Oasis do not appreciate people spamming this event thread with other events.

There seems to be lots of events happening in the SoCal area that coincide with one another and no one else seems to spam event threads with other events so show some respect to Otto and Doe for all the hard work they put in and to the rest of us who check this thread just to find out Oasis info.

Anyways BACK ON TOPIC super stoked about Derek's poster art this year. Can't wait to own the full size version because the website teaser is just too good.

What's Oasis without Derek art?

Oasis seems to get better and better every year and I am very appreciative of how Doe and Otto work their tails off for us to all have such an enjoyable time.

If you have have never volunteered before I strongly urge you to contact Ikabod and get in on that. Its a great way to meet folks you otherwise would never interact with plus you get to attend the weekend for free with the basic armband as your "payment" for donating some of your time.

I am so excited for August to get here!
139 Days until the Bali Hai...not like I am counting or anything

I guess I missed the room presale. Need to know when the rooms will be available. We fly out from Chicago every year to support the event. Can't get plane tickets until we get our room.

You are so right! There is so much going on at Tiki Oasis that we should not post at length about other events here. There is a "What's Happenin in SoCal" thread and of course the California events forum for individual threads.

For example, the Friday night headliners are The Barbwires from Sweden doing an incredible, first time in the U.S. style show.
A few years ago The Barbwires released an epic surf soundtrack with horns and strings that is powerful and melodic and timeless.

Also, Derek Yaniger and Shag will be on hand signing their art. Here is Derek's full poster art.
(The art shown on the website right now is Derek's teaser art)

Yeah the website allowed us our room. See you all there!!!

A tuxedo or turtleneck? What is more functional poolside at the Crowne Plaza? Maybe I should go undercover as a drunk tourist in a Hawaiian shirt. My mission, to get rum from room to room and cleverly hide it in my belly one glass at a time.

Yea Big Tiki Dude... stop posting about Tiki Oasis on the Surf Guitar 101 website!!!

You people need to get a life....

Bigtikidude (and Jonpaul) are the glue that bind Tiki and Surf music culture together !!

http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/17563/

Surf and Spy are a good compliment !!

Monty "Dum di-di dum dum" Norman and John Barry understood.

The Go Go's got it.

And how about the Spies Who Surf ?? What a great reunion show that would be !!

Ok that's enough Spy. How about more Tiki NOIR (aka Polynesian PULP) ??...

John O, and Scott,
thanks for the enthusiasm, but I don't think it's welcome here.
Please don't mention my event anymore in this thread.

Here's a James Bond trivia question...

What film in the series was closest to mid-century Tiki-style ??

GROG posted on Wed, Apr 4, 2012 9:47 AM

Moonraker, of course.

I'm going with You Only Live Twice.

Anyone who disagrees will be mocked on a regular basis. :)

Dr. No

And Jack Lord Too!

The key word is "closest". :) And the answer is...

"Diamonds are Forever"

Where key scenes took place at Circus Circus, which in turn was right next door to the Stardust Hotel and Casino.

Home of the Aku Aku.

That's as "close" as James Bond got to an authentic Tiki bar. :D

BTW, that film was the best in the series IMHO.

Your reaching, Buddy.
But the Texas Millionaire Pad is super cool!

Best in the series? Much more likely the worst of the series. (Somebody needs to wake up that sleep-walkin' Connery in that film. The whole film is just one big excuse for Cubby and his pals to spend a bunch of time in Vegas. After THE BEST of the series, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Diamonds is an embarrassment!. John-O, I beg you to re-listen to the fine 2-part podcast that Digitiki and myself did on the Quiet Village on James Bond...only then will you see the truth!).

xxoo,
JB

I know I'm right...

Mr. Bond begs to differ...

Do you guys even remember the Villain's lair in Dr. No?
throw in Jack Lord as Felix (Best Felix, Ever!)
Plus it's a Space Terminal to boot, now if there was a Tiki anywhere on the set
Winning!

JB

Top Five Best

  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
2&3. (tie) Dr. No/From Russia with Love
  2. Thunderball
  3. The World is Not Enough

Top Five Worst

  1. Diamonds are Forever
  2. Die Another Day
  3. A View to a Kill
  4. You Only Live Twice
  5. Tomorrow Never Dies

talk about a thread derail....

John-O in your never ending quest to be the King of the Contrarians did you do a search for Worst James Bond movie before your post?

That's the only possible reason you'd pick Diamonds are Forever.

I stand by my original post. Your Blofeld fights on an oil rig :-?, my Blofeld fights in a Volcano. :D

My reasons are stated here Boris !! DAF has since surpassed TB for me. DAF is awesome !!

And at least DAF has a Tiki connection. Afer all this is Tiki Central not James Bond Central.

You want another ??

Jill St. John dated Henry Kissinger, who we all know served as Secretary of State under Richard Nixon.

Tricky Dick is the only standing U.S. President to have been photographed at a Tiki bar (Trader Vic's Washingon DC in 1973)...

"Diamonds Are Forever" = Tiki.

OK, let's get this thread back on track with the Oasis theme.

Who can identify the following 2 Film Noirs that have a "Tiki bar" scene...

John-O: Where Danger Lives (Robert Mitchum at pogo Pete's) & The Blue Gardenia (Ann Baxter and Raymond Burr-drinking Polynesian Pearldivers))

"Marriage, Mortgages and Mai-Tai's...Whatta life!"

[ Edited by: SoccerTiki 2012-04-05 07:59 ]

JMHO...Dr No is my favorite Bond film...I am forever mesmerized by Connery when he is waiting in the bungalow surrounded by bamboo...and love the back-room bar scene with Jack Lord. DAF does epitomize the MCM flavor in that swinging LV (Palm Springs) way.

Love that picture of Robert Mitchum in that bar...nice display of float lamps...wonderful ambiance. Uhhh...waiter...I'll have another...

Just to set the record straight Space Terminal is actually a "Space craft jamming station" Atomic powered!
it was an inaccurate description, I need to watch Dr.No again.

Now Bow before "Jack Lord"

I missed Film Noir trivia? stupid work......

J

Here are the "Tiki bar" clips...

"Blue Gardenia" is obviously a set but it does have Nat King Cole !!

This is the only Noir that I know of where a Tropical cocktail is integral to the plot.

"Where Danger Lives" however looks to be an actual location. :)

to further derail this thread - here is one of the worst and strangest Spy movies ever
(as if talking in depth about the THEME of Tiki Oasis would be derailing the thread?)

Weng Weng, aka Agent 00

Oh, thank you for mentioning this, Otto! One of the best-worst movies EVER. Ken Ruzic turned me on to Weng Weng. Darn you, Kinny! You've corrupted my fragile little mind once again!

Weng Weng rap not to be missed :D

Just sharing...cause I remember doing the "open channel D" routine with a pen fairly regularly with my friends back in the day. Solo and Kuryakin, trained in martial arts, also had a range of useful spy equipment, including handheld satellite communicators to keep in contact with UNCLE headquarters. A catchphrase often heard was "Open Channel D" when agents used their pocket radios; these were originally disguised as cigarette packs, later as a cigarette case, and in following seasons, as pens. One of the original pen communicators now resides in the museum of the Central Intelligence Agency. The museum is not accessible to the public. Replicas have been made over the years for other displays, and this is the second-most-identifiable prop from the series (closely following the U.N.C.L.E. Special pistol).

J

Cool childhood TV memories Vampy !! :)

TMFU even made it into current TV pop culture in an episode of "Mad Man". In one scene, daughter Sally really "enjoys" watching the show as well. Ha, Ha...

BUT did Napoleon Solo ever visit a Tiki bar? :D

I do know that TV Exotica Girl Vitina Marcus made a guest appearance (again sporting the animal skin) in "My Friend, The Gorilla Affair"...

Check out her smokin' Tiki dance scene from "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".

For my money, Stephanie Powers in "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E." was much more Tiki.

In "The Paradise Lost Affair" episode she even goes "native"...

Plus TGFU had the way better soundtrack score. Those "wordless vocals" would play well in a Tiki bar.
