People take the theme however they want and decorate/dress up however they see fit. Doesn't matter in the end because the point of Oasis is to have fun...which it seems everyone does regardless of theme. Every year people bitch, bitch, bitch -- oh that's not tiki, oh South of the Border - that's not tiki, oh Spytiki--that's not tiki, this year is Hulabilly not Hillbilly how dare you think differently!! blah, blah, blah It does not matter. And if you think it does DON'T GO. Please..stay home and let the rest of us have a blast. The bands are booked, the hotel is full, volunteers are waiting for their assignments and Tiki Oasis is just over 2 months away. Bring on the moonshine drinking rockabillies and let's get on with it! oh and Cammo you have an unending bank of hillbilly knowledge...or a lot of free time on your hands  [ Edited by: SandraDee 2013-06-10 18:42 ] |

Well as much as I hate to rely on Wikipedia to make a point, this is from their definition of Rockabilly... "The term 'rockabilly' is a portmanteau of 'rock' (from 'rock 'n' roll') and 'hillbilly', the latter a reference to the country music (often called 'hillbilly music' in the 1940s and 1950s) that contributed strongly to the style's development." Spike's definition of Hulabilly sways more towards Rockabilly incorporating Hapa Haole, Exotica, and Surf influences. The steel guitar is a major part of The Hula Girls' sound. Otto's definition is a bit broader, refer to his take on the first post of this thread. The challenge with "Hulabilly" is that as a musical style, there isn't an abundance of pop cultural iconography to uniquely represent the genre, aside from maybe "Blue Hawaii" Elvis. If anyone here can contribute other examples, then I encourage them to post on this thread. HILL-billies on the other hand, were all over the place during the Pre-Tiki and Tiki eras as evident in film, television, and print. They were a unique pop cultural phenomena as reflective of the times as Spy, the "South of the Border" sound, and yes Tiki. This broad umbrella or "connecting of the dots" is what makes Tiki Oasis so unique among all the different events. It's also what makes it so much FUN !! C'mon, we need to think outside the box otherwise we're just gonna wind up with Viva Las Vegas (the event) in Aloha shirts. Carry on, Cammo. :) |

gah, stop telling everyone the difference or all the good 50's "hulabilly" dresses I like and want to buy are gonna spike on who cares what people wear, and what category it is? I know I don't! As long as folks have fun, love the music and the art, make friends, and buy stuff, it seems that would be a successful Oasis. Right? Mr. Doodie and I are looking forward to a great time. So excited for all the bands. See ya there! |

Turtleburgers. This is from the website of the band Southern Culture On The Skids, who'll be playing at an Oasis Near You. They have a Home Cooking section, and I'm not saying I'm gonna make these babies at Oasis, but if anybody DOES MAKE THEM then RING THE DINNER BELL DORIS cause I'M HUNGRY!!!!! Yep, that's genuine bacon weave: (These are hamburger inside, but could it be done with real turtle meat?!?!?!? Anybody know? MadDogMike?) |

Is the only way to get a mug to buy a VIP ticket? Or will there be mugs available at the event? Any previews yet on what the mug is gonna look like this year? Thanks! |

Any extra mugs left over once the VIP/mug tickets have been accounted for they generally put them on sale at the Tiki Oasis merch booth starting at 6/7pm Friday night. They make an announcement over the speakers so you know when they are selling them. Since the time 6pm or 7pm changes you can ask the people working the check-in booth on Friday morning at the Crowne Plaza when they will exactly be going on sale. Usually its the morning crew who gets this information first. There is a preview somewhere....I want to say on Facebook but its been awhile since I remember seeing it. And yes they always have mugs for sale :) [ Edited by: sandradee 2013-06-12 10:21 ] |

This is a great preview to the music of Tiki Oasis. Some western swing, some rockabilly, some swamp surf, some truck driving music (??), some 1930s Hawaiian, and some bonafied HULABILLY. But no hillbilly. Know the difference. Give it a listen!! http://www.radiofreebakersfield.com/shows/rfb320.mp3 Repost from Whorehay: Guest hosted by Spike of the Hula Girls! southern culture on the skids--skullbucket; chapel hill b-stars--ink free baby of mine; san francisco hula girls--hulabilly honey; costa mesa chris sprague & his 18 wheelers--let's get drunk & truck; van nuys lucky stars--hot potato; hollywood cheap leis--right here in my heart; san diego acapulco radio--bikini beat; berlin kitty chow & fisherman--apache; oakland/nyc surfer joe--the north swell; livorno kim tsoy & the new sauce--take the keys to my heart; lake alfred big sandy & his fly-rite boys--love me to cinders; long beach Tiki Oasis 13 Opening night August 15 Main event August 16-18 http://www.radiofreebakersfield.com/shows/rfb320.mp3 http://radiofreebakersfield.com |

I love the discourse we are having here John-O. From the all knowing Otto's own Tiki Oasis page This year at Tiki Oasis we are exploring the Hawaiian influence on American music. Part Americana, part Hawaiiana, Hulabilly is an American music style derived from the blending of Rockabilly and Haole Hawaiian music. Just as Tiki Style is a blend of Polynesian influences as interpreted through Americans' romanticized view of the South Seas, Hawaiian music has been sentimentalized and interpreted by American musicians. Like waves hitting the Pacific shores, America experienced recurring ukulele crazes with a longing look toward the Hawaiian Sunset. Similarly in the 1930s, 40s and 50s Hawaiian Slack Key guitar and slide guitar seeped into Western music and permeated The Nashville Sound. American musicians used that sound to play their own versions of Hawaiian music classics such as "On the Beach at Waikiki","Hula Blues", and "Ukulele Lady" and then form their own Westernized Hawaii sound blending Hawaiian music influences with American early rock n roll (Bop) to create the sound of HulaBilly. From Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys version of "Hawaiian War Chant" in 1946 To Elvis Presley's "Rock-A-Hula Baby" in the Grammy-nominated movie "Blue Hawaii" in 1961, Hulabilly was a popular music form on America's radios, televisions, and movies. That introduction never mentions hillbilly, which is sometimes considered to be a derogatory slang term. Yet, there are posts here that are doing everyone interested in learning more about Hulabilly a disservice. John-O started his own thread about Hula-billy, but somehow ‘hulabilly’ takes a backseat to ‘hillbilly’ in this thread? More/less the 'Hillbilly' genre/aesthetic has piggybacked (no pun intended) onto this, and with the organizers (sorry Otto / BabyDoe) perpetuating this connection with emails in the proverbial southern accent twang doesn't help. Its like paying for some information from a reliable source, just to be sold something completely different except for the switching of a couple vowels. Don’t worry kids I swear its milk they say, well I ain’t drinking it! So, instead of posting the ‘Greatest Hillbillies of All Time’, or cartoons, why not talk some more about the aforementioned groups that were brought up in the Tiki Oasis intro, the bands, the event itself? Some posters/readers don’t even care for the theme, as that’s not the reason they are going. I’m usually in that crowd of whatever, this event really doesn’t need a theme to me, ie – the year it was ‘Circus’ didn’t even care. I know I’ll have a good time chatting with people, and taking in some of the bands, symposiums. If the theme is something I can wrap my head around then great. But, when skewing the lines of the theme into something it isn’t, then that needs to be corrected. I know there are those that agree with that, and those that say let bygones be bygones. Guess this year’s theme I’m siding with the former. Yea, look for me at the event, I’ll be wearing the shirt that reads –ITS HULABILLY, not HIllBILLY. :) [ Edited by: Tiki-ESP 2013-06-12 12:37 ] |

Well to me you really don't have to explicity use the word "hillbilly" if you take into consideration the history of Country music. "Hillbilly" back in the 1920's through the 1940's, was the popular term for the musical genre we now refer to as Country. Here's an seminal Hulabilly example from 1929... Everybody Does It In Hawaii by Jimmie Rodgers, performing his Hillbilly yodel. If you take the Hillbilly out of Hulabilly, all you'll have left is the Hula. :) |

For the basic four-night ticket, Thursday-Sunday here is what you get Full Weekend Wristband Tiki Oasis is four nights and three days, this ticket gets you into the event for all of that. To get an idea of the event you should check out our History and FAQ If you buy either of the VIP tickets you automatically get the commemorative limited edition mug, but he mug can be bought a la carte if it is not sold out, and admission to symposiums except where noted Symposium tickets can be bought a la carte, if it is not sold out |
