I did make that one and it is made of rattan.
BUT the one that was nine years (because I grew the bamboo)
is this one.

The green bamboo bends much better.
Got lot of cool stuff working if mother nature ever loosens her death grip she

Well not really, the real work starts now.
If I can get just half of what's in my head made should be some cool stuff.
Provided the neighbor's don't stop by as often with booze as they did last year I should
get some lights made.

Had thought about vending at Hukilau but don't know if I would have enough made by then.

Skipper- wow, every time I see your work
it makes me wish I had about 30 more outlets on the celing of my bar

U da man

T
tikiskip posted on 03/17/2015

Thanks hang10tiki.
This is why I use C7 light bulbs, or Candelabra base sockets.
They don't need much power and they put out all you need for these type of lights
and the low watt means low heat so no fires, plus less electric usage.
It's a win, win, win.
You could also use 15 watt exit lights if more light is needed but most of the
time this is not the case.

If it's just a "hey I don't have the outlet" there are other low cost ways around that too.

Going to have a few new lights in a few weeks got some cool new ones commin.

Need to start sellin as the lights are piling up like the cartoon Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
Need to get Kris Kringle to take them to all the good tiki boys and girls, but then that would only
get rid of like what three?

This is a smallish light, was going to make this a table light
but went with the hanging light instead.

Got lots of small shades to work with, going to do some table lamps I
think.

Do people need small table lamps in their home bars?

Great work Skip. I have a few small table lamps in my home bar. I use them to cast a warm glow in different areas. They work great to set a mood and light small areas of artifacts and help folks find a spot to set a cocktail. Keep up the great work.

Skip-love the new lights. The large fish float looks exceptionally amazing. The interior float looks like it has both a frosted and hammered appearance. Did you find it that way or has it been modified? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

Capt'n Skully posted on 04/10/2015

Saw this little bad boy in person... Excellent piece. The tying is beautiful, and Skip's passion shows in the detail and finish.

T
tikiskip posted on 04/10/2015

Thanks Trav! will try to make some table lamps too.
Buy the bomb Trav!

Stacy that one is a bit smaller than the yellow float I sent you, but the red float
here is a tad larger.
But on the cork one I got that idea watching some old western and they had those
oil lamps hanging in the bar, well this is styled after those lights.
And thank you!
you are one of my favorite customers for sure!

Rvic that is a plastic globe it came with a pebble finish, ya never know if a globe is
going to work till you buy it and tie it. (had to frost it myself)
But my wife and I go to many antique and other shows to find light parts and other cool stuff
it's hard to find the right globe to tie as you need the right shape, right color and
then many times when you find a good one the dealer wants more than I would sell it for
after I make it into a light.
Then you need to find the rope, it takes a ton of rope to tie these floats!
On light parts you find it where you find it, and that is everywhere.

Eric your passion for knowing the meaning of the tribal this and that plus the facts behind the
stuff you make makes my head spin.
Keep up the good work.

Show us how you fix your bar on TC as you go.

That small cork light is sold, going to NC.
Going to a person who has bought many of my lights
thanks again repeat NC girl!!

H
hiltiki posted on 04/16/2015

Skip, just wondering where do you get the rope that you use for the netting?

T
tikiskip posted on 04/16/2015

Well there is not a true answer for that one.
My wife and I go to antique shows, flea markets, estate sales, garage sales.
Man the list goes on and on.
But here's the deal, you look and look and find stuff that will work as tiki bar décor
and keep buying and saving each piece till you have a light.

Not much of what I use comes from a store I can say. Go here.
Maybe Franks Cane and Rush.

You can get rope anywhere really.
BUT what you want to do is find it old, and cheap, plus LOTS of it.
Now that can be hard to do.
The amount of rope needed to tie a large float is a lot of rope.
Costs on that if you buy rope at the store would be more than I sell the whole light for most times.
I think Lena said she paid almost $70.00 bucks for the rope to tie her last float with some
left over and heck the globe was $70.00 as well.
But the globe was from the Kahiki.

So you go look for rope but find cork.
Try to find cork but get a rattan hat, that's how you do it.

If I did nothing but made lights 10 hours a day for years I don't think I could use up all the crap
I have stored away.

Got some rope here for $60.00 bucks three spools.
But I got it all.

That Edco place sells old, I mean OLD tools and crap.
I think most of the stuff was priced long ago and they are too lazy to go
through and redo the prices.
It used to be an old Dan Dees potato chip factory.

I NEVER thought I would get anything for doing lights.
So ya find it where you find it.

Tikiskip Tiki island Smoker....

Going to replace the side and front tables with Original Kahiki Koa wood from the dining room tables
of the Kahiki.

Also you can see how only one of the handles has the wrap on both ends. (Smoke box right side)
Going to do the other one, just wanted to show how it looked with and without the bamboo
skin wrapping.

Then this will be ready for a centerfold in Smoker Tiki porn mag.

Just a reminder that now is the time to buy bulbs for your tiki bar lighting.
I like to use the C7 and sometimes the C9 Christmas type bulbs in my lights.
They burn cool and they don’t use a bunch of power as well.
BUT it can be hard to find these bulbs at times other than Christmas.

I had to get some of mine from eBay this year.

Good Luck!!

I've read this thread before and have commented on it before as well, but since i started making my own lights i went back and looked at every page again last night. Some seriously amazing work here Skip. Such a huge variety of pieces and your rope work on the floats is just incredible. That's something i'll have to tackle myself one day but even when i do, it's going to take a LOT of practice to get anywhere near the quality of your work.
