Hey Skip I know how you have been spending big bucks to get holes but why aren't people or even you just buying those garden globes with the hole / tunnel already there. Plus they all come in cool colors already.

T

It's not done yet Robb.
But it will be a hat on top.

And teaKEY I don't use those garden globes because
people would look at it and go "Oh look he used one of those
garden globes"
I want the lights I make to look like they came right out of the
Kahiki or Mai Kai.

Here is the absolutely awesome light I bought from Tikiskip at last weekends Festiki event:

This baby completely tranformed our gazebo.

The hook is perfect for the job.

I just have a simple dept. store gazebo, but the atmoshpere at night is much, much nicer now.

Thanks so much Tikiskip!!

T

It has been some time since I have posted as our computer went down.
We waited till windows 7 came out to get a new one.
When you do not have a computer you have much more time on your hands.
Below is some of what I did with that time.

Wow Skip, your basket sculpting and weaving, rope tie-ing and aging skills are truly impressive! I would not be able to tell these ligths apart from vintage ones if you tested me!

Thank you very much Sven.
Coming from the guy who wrote the book
that is a huge compliment!
Plus that is my goal to make my lights
look like they came from one of the tiki joints
of old.
If there is one person that knows these places inside
and out it is certainly you!!
Thanks again.

That rum company should hire you to make these lamps from their bottles - a promotional give-away or something like that. VERY cool. Too bad Sailor Jerry's bottles have the paper wrapper instead of the screened print on the glass - THAT would be a really cool lamp too!

Good idea!
Wont be long now.

  1. Very cool skip! 8)

Skip - Love the Sailors Jerry work.

My friend makes lamps out of empty alcohol bottles and used one with a paper label. There is this sray can he purchased at Home Depot or a craft store that "fogs" the glass, making it cloudy so you can't see the wiring he runs through the bottle but clear enough to see the label. The biggest problem he runs into is drilling out the bottom of the bottle without breaking the glass. He uses a special bit but has broken plenty of bottles doing so. I'm looking to make one out of a Sailors Jerry bottle soon so I'll keep you posted.

Skip I've been looking at your balls and I think you have some of the nicest balls on TikiCentral. But I really think that you netted is superbe where the netting trails up higher than I've seen anywhere else. I have even seen a vintage float the other day that had easy to do netting that is easy but no one has done before. I wish I could pick your brain about them though.

~teaKEY

C

OK, so while I Soooooooooooooo agree with how EXCELLENT t.skip's floats & other lights are, the following made me totally LOL & just couldn't go by without some commentary......

Good to know that you get around, teakey, to look at the many balls of TC

Actually, the last time skip came to The Dock for dinner he brought some lights and a customer complimented that he had the biggest blue balls she had ever seen.

I'm NOT kidding!!!!!!!

Cheers and Mahalo,
Jeff

T

Ha! Ha!
Those ladies were great!

Hey Teakey the top part on these are the hard part.
Its easy to get mixed up and tie the wrong rope to the
wrong rope.
But if you look at old floats they dont tie them like I
do.
They kinda finsh much shoter than I. (Ha! more sex talk)
I like to tie them long so that they come down off of the ceiling.
But then theirs are made for floating, and mine are made for lighting.

But when balls are held for pleasure thats the balls that I like best!"

T

Ok so how you going to hang those cool lights ya just got?
Here are some ideas.
The first pictures are some fancy chain.
This stuff is high dollar though. $6.00 to $8.00 bucks a foot!
But its all about the details I think.
The last photo is some rattan chain that I made.
I used to look all over for this rattan chain, almost never found it.
Then I thought I can make that.
Just made some nice pendant lights that all this stuff is for.
Cant show em yet as they will make their debut in the spring.
First lights of 2010.

LT

Nice work on the rattan chain!

T

Thanks!
Ok here is what I will do....
If there is enough interst I will show how the chain is made.
So if say 12 people post on this thread I want to know how to make the
rattan chain, in say one weeks time I'll show you how to do it.
Right here, same bat time, same bat channel.

T

How?
I have a fresh bag of it but yours looks better?!
How?

I'm prolly too inept to accomplish this, myself, but I'd still like to konw how you did it.

T
teaKEY posted on Sun, Feb 7, 2010 8:15 AM

I'll take a guess at how the chain was made. Soak? Then start with a loop, next keep going around the loop by twisting around and around and around. Next twist around the loop for a third time, Tuck the loose in into the fold of the twist. Now you have one link. Just my guess.

T

Thats close Teakey.
But there are small tips and tricks to make
it go more smoothly.
7 more I wanna see how its done posts to go.
Then I can give you those tips.

B

I'm in - I gotta know the nitty-gritty details! (not the nitty-gritty dirt band!)

Me too
Hows it done please?
Trader Bob

T
