Another approximate 4-6 mugs are in early stage development for a Fall debut.

Something is missing from this list. Was it top secret? The date this list was made is pre-contest, that makes more sense.

Everyone may have thought of the goof mug. I'm not saying it's a completely original idea. Until I put the old Christian hut goof in a mug form and submitted it it was not slated for production any time soon obviously.

You stated yourself that you liked my drawing and even took it to the owners of the Bali Hai for their approval.

Now you sit here and smugly say I had nothing to do with the Christian hut goof mug.

I'm honestly not flattered by your liking my drawing and the right thing to do would have been to at least email me prior to using my drawing in your business dealings.

The only thing I have done here is question your integrity/ honesty. I think I've more than proven my point so this is over as far as I'm concerned.

The only thing this dust up proves is that, as Babalu points out, any non-original work should just be ruled out. For many reasons.

Any 'tributes' to poly-pop era mug designs (frankie war gods, etc.) or direct copies (sorry, 'tributes') of Witco & menu covers & matchbooks just aren't what a design contest is all about. It's the design that's being rewarded, not the excellence of the final mug; there's a subtle difference.

Hmmm. Personally, I think the Blue Hold Fast Pirate is the coolest mug I've seen in quite some time. It's totally original. The Beautiful Banana Boat is super nice (I want one!) but seems less imaginative in direct comparison.....

It's getting kinda nasty in here!

My design was based on the menu of the Mauna Loa but the drawing on the menu cover was based on an actual Oceanic carved drum. I used my illustration skills to combine the two and to come up with a Tiki mug that pays tribute to the Mauna Loa. I thought everyone on TC would be into it. It's a dream come true for me as a Tiki collector and Illustator to see this idea produced by Tiki Farm and will always be thankful to those folks for the opportunity. I wish everyones ideas could have been picked but hopefully Holden will hold another contest next year for Tiki Central.........

I honestly had no idea your mug design was based on a menu cover - I didn't read the fine print on your sketch, and wasn't familiar with the menu itself. The design is very nice, I like the idea of the drum a lot, and the 'cameo bird' back is cool. I'll buy one.

But again this brings up something that's been simmering a lot lately, and that nobody wants to talk about - how purely original the new Tiki designs are. Or aren't.

Oops! Found him. :D He fell off and was on the floor. It rolled behind the desk and was hard to reach. It got a little dusty, but it looks alright for all the wear and tear. This one may not be yours, though. LLT uses so many of them, it wouldn't be surprising if this is one of his that fell off the screen.

Sure thing LLT. You know the "Goof-E-Hune" was first conceived as an action figure, but failed miserably in initial test markets. The first shipments were rejected when found to have abnormally high levels of lead. The Chinese government took care of the responsible parties though, via firing squad. Paybacks a bitch!

Make Da Goof Mug!

Tiki Farm, those fine purveyors of all things Nuevo Poly-Pop, have been soliciting Tiki Central members for new mug designs, and announced the 6 lucky contest winners yesterday. These talented folks will have their designs turned into actual mugs by the T-Farmers.

As much as I like the winning entries, however, I think the classic Christian's Hut "Goof" mug design by Eric Bass (shown above) should've won because, dammit, I want one!
