Stupendous!

Up-end-us!

L

Genial, the contrast between finishing in the gouge and smooth parts makes the whole really superbly terrible

BD

seek

he just gets more beautiful every time you take his photo.
great carve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
was gonna say great job but that wasn't a job it looks more like a labor of love.

bd

Seriously, a labor of love.

Beautiful, Seeks.

Looks so impressive standing there dwarfing you and the pooch.

Just love the texture in this guy too.

Take a break, not too long, and get to the next one!

B

:o

Capt'n Seek the fantastic is da man.
Capt'n Seek president of the masterpieces. I vote.

Awesome amazing super top shelf work mister.
The chisel texture next to the smooth "sanded like crazy" parts makes it totally.
The flowers up and down the eyes seem so perfect here.
I'll have a nice day, thanks.

Benjamin.

YES!!

Well i guess it's all been said.
But I just have to put another awsome up here.

Great work, was the wood fairly green when you carved it? It has a lovely smooth look to the chisel cuts

B

Damn fine stuffs on this here thread! Sweeeeet!

SUBLIME!!!

B

Truly a great Masterpiece. Now that you have totally blown us all away with your Lono, when are you sending it down to my place? :o
Really, you have out done yourself on this carve and set the standard higher than we could ever possibly begin to match. Well done!

S

JohnnP, GMAN, conga, laojia, big daddy, Lake, benella,
tikifreak, Grampa-RuHa, cheeky, Babalu, Jungle Trader,
and Benz. Mahalo for all the support like i said it really helps most people think i sould be carving bears?

Yes! a labor of love is the only way i could spend this much
time working on a single figure.

Yes cheeky it was fairly wet when i started tall boy will crack
some more.

Have you seen those shipping cost lately Benz! they have almost doubled!

SUPER GROM!!! Totally Incredulous! Bring him to Hukilau! As a carry on!
A carved bear? What's that!

Thanks surfin. Man i wish i could make it to Hukilau.
We need a event in the PNW area.

T

Wow, jaw dropping good man! Yeah I don't even wanna know what that thing would cost to ship. I'm sure it's worth it though! It would sure have a place of honor in my house!!

Oh - question: the calves. Are they rounded out like that to strengthen the lower legs or is that traditionally part of the design? Thanks!

[ Edited by: TheBigT 2009-02-12 12:07 ]

The BigT - Mahalo. The oversized calf's are part of the design.
Just a overexaggeration. I would like to do this with the arms and
body but my logs are not thick enough or I would end up with
a very short and small body.

Tall Boy was intended to be a chain saw only carve. The eye area
front & back shows a lack of extended thought.
I found out he would fit in the van, so i brought him home.
I just couldn't stop chipping on him.

That is an amazing piece! Wow, the detail and size, great job!

Amy

incredible, man! amazing job.

B

man seeks this guy came out incredible, cant wait to see
how you finish him!

B

It's OK, I'll pay the shipping!
Bring it ON!

C

You won! Looks excellent, congrats!

Seeks, that is absolutely PHENOMENAL!!!!!
I just got an 8 foot log moved to my house & planning another lono, but you have definitely set the bar higher than I can hope to see. Hope you don't mind if I reference this carve for some inspiration.
Wow, I can not get over how beautifully fierce he is.
You are the MAN.

Tyler

S

Great job, that looks amazing. Anxious to see how the finish comes out.

cheers.

S

Queen K, tikitomas, buzzard, Benz, Clarita, tikisbytyler and seagoat
thanks for the kind words.

tikisbytyler - reference all you like that how i do it.

Yes, the finish again my biggest fear!

Not tiki but local indigenous art created around the same time as the Polinesians.

very fine work, like you clean crisp cuts. the textures that you get with your tools are perfect.
thanks for sharing them with us

T

Yeah, that's cool. Looks like a back breaker to be working on the floor, tho.

Seek -
nice looking totem. I've been doing some research on Haida orca carvings and it opened up a whole new window of awesome carvings. Are you going to paint this one?

That Lono is really kick ass too. Great work!

Ohhhhhh Boy! Here comes another masterpiece!!

Any stain updates?

S

KiltedTiki - Thanks for the drop in.

TheBigT - Yes the floor I don't have anything setup for
off the floor. Its OK with me because i don't know any-better.

Polynesiac - Thanks yes I think i will apply the paint.
I goggled the Haida orca very nice.

surfin - Don't know about masterpiece but I'm getting better.

laojia - Mahalo Yes Bill Reid WoW his work realy stands out.
I don't know how far or long i will work in this direction.
This carve was inspired in me by the tribal elder Russell Woodruff from Lapush, WA.

Lake - Always good to hear from ya.

Heath - Howdy heath bar good to hear from ya.
No stain yet its running thru my head as we speak
It might be to cold still?

L

I see, you playing at home...Thank's for the link, always curious about other cultures.

S

Pole update. Man this guy is drying fast and its getting harder to
carve in him.

T

Couldn't you always cover parts that you don't want to dry too fast? Love the frog. My dad made a clay pot a decade or two ago and always stuck hard in my mind.

Damn Seeks, nice frog!

Do you do everything in life so perfect?

This is going to be a very impressive carve, tiki or no tiki.

You've got to spill the beans sometime... you must have some sort of sculpture background... or just a hell of a great eye for 3 dimensional work.

D

Seek
Your work is wonderful, the best. Thanks to guys like you and Benz, Tucson Tiki and all the other great carvers on TC, I keep on trying. If you haven't already , check out this film, well worth the 27 minutes to watch about Bill Reid, Haida carver.
http://www.nfb.ca/film/bill_reid/

C

Well that's just incredible. No, it's even better than that. Wonderful
lay-out of the figures, you must have had ancestors on the NW coast.

S

teaKEY - thanks I have covered other carves, but I didn't know it was going to take this long.

Lake - Thanks on the frog, Yes i pain-staked for a week on that
frog. I think carving is the only thing i stride for perfection
on and it could always be better.
Yes, the beans question again. Its the good eye thing.
Hiding past talent is not my style.

drogat456 - thanks, but im nowhere close to a Benz.
Yes i will check out the bill reid link. I love his Raven
Creation clam carving.

conga - thanks conga you and your carvings are one reason
i stick with it.

Aloha Seeks!!!WOW!!!Have you been a Busy Man!Your carvings are looking INCREDABLE!!!Keep it up you really have a Great eye and Flow!Aloha , Mooney

Wow! We're on the same wave length. I have been trying to figure out how to incorporate a frog into my carvings. However , I wanted to make mine a chirping frog (have you seen the wooden frogs that make a chirping sound when rubbed). Great carving - keep going.

Nice Job Man

T

This pole is sooo cool!

This update responds to my question! I imagine the difficulty of the work when the wood has dried. But I think, in view the pics, that you have a significantly higher level to meet the challenge, it is clear that your hand with a gouges is provided and accurate.
I like the raw surface, it shows the mastery of the work by hand and also to the sharpening... I would like to see it more closely!

Good continuation, good work!

J.

S

Mooney - Good to hear from you! been laying low?
thanks for the encouragement.

AlohaStation - Being on the same wave length is a great complement coming from the likes of you.
no i haven't seen the little frogs you are talking
about. If you haven't seen may Indian poles check them out some have frogs hidden everywhere.

drasticwagon - thanks much sir.

Tahitiki - thanks for the sooo cool.

laofia - Glad we are communicating well.
thanks for the thumbs up.

S

NOTCH - thanks! I hate it when i respond and
then left someone out. I did that to GMAN once
and he was helping me out I felt like a dumbass.
